ARRANGEMENT FOB AUTOMATICALLY REGULATING- THE ADVANCE OF THE SPARK IN EXPLOSION-MOTORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aueosrn DUTBEUX, en 'neer, of 26 Rue J ean-J acques Rousseau, at ssy les Moulineaux, Department of the citizen of the French Republic, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in=Arrangements for Automatically Regulatin the Advance of the Spark in Explosionotors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to arrangements for automatically regulating the advance of the spark in explosion motors more particularly employed in ignition systems in which the dynamo used for lighting or starting is employed as the ignition dynamo. As is well known, in such systems use is always made of a regulating arrangement main taining the voltage or the current constant at the terminals of the dynamo whatever the speed of the latter. The regulating device employed acts on the exciting circuit in such a manner that when the speed of the dynamo is considerable the excitation is weak and on the contrary the excitation is strong when the dynamo rotates at low speed.
The invention contemplates utilizing the variations thus produced in the exciting circuit to control automatically the interrupter or the interrupter and the distributer of a regulator for advancing the spark.
The employment of the excitin current of a dynamo for controlling the a vance of the spark enables the centrifugal speed reg- ,ulator ordinarily employed in arrangements hitherto known to be dispensed with.
The accompanying drawings represent, by way of example, twoconstructional forms of the subject of the invention.
Figure 1 is a view partly in .vertical section and partly in elevation of one constructional form of the invention 'in which the exciting current of the variable speed dynamo governs solel the interrupter of the primary circuit of t e ignition apparatus.

Fig. 3 is a view partially in vertical section and partially in elevation of a modification in which the exciting current of the variable speed dynamo controls simultaneously the interrupter and the arm of the distributer.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the control cam of the interrupter. In Fig. 1, the shaft of the dynamo is represented at 1, a sleeve 2 being fixed thereon. A part 3 of magnetic metal is pressed on to the sleeve 2. This partis so shaped as to inclose a coil 4 and acts as an electromagnet, an interior portion 5 of the part 3 acting as the core. The current of the exciting circuit is led to the coil 4 by two rings 6 and 7 and sliding contacts 8 and 9. In Fig. 1 is represented diagrammatically the dynamo at 10, the exciting windings of the latter at 11, the consumption circuit of the dynamo, or principal conductors, at 12, a regulating arrangement at 13 the function of which is to regulate the strength of the current in the excitation circuits 11 in such a manner that either the voltage or the current at the terminals remains constant, and at 14 a resistance which can be partially or wholly short circuited when the dynamo operates under load, and open circuited when it is running unloaded, in order to make the two excitation curves of the generator light and loaded for different speeds substantially coincide.

The armature 16 comprises a cylindrical extension 20, on which is formed one or more cam surfaces for the purpose of operating the arm 21 of an interrupter contacts I 22 and 23 of which close or open the primary circuit of the induction coil in accordance with the configuration of the cam part with reference to the extremity of the arm 21.
Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a cylinder 20 and shows at 2 1 a cam adapted to engage with the arm of the interrupter.
he operation of the apparatus is as follows: At slow speed the excitation current is maximum.. The armature 15 is attracted by the part 5 and compresses the spring 18. The interrupter 21 is engaged by the extremity of the cam 24 opposite the dynamo.
hen the speed increases the voltage or current of the generator remaining constant by reason of the regulating device 13, the strength of the exciting current decreases, e spring 18 repelling the armature 15.

With a suitable shape of the cams 24 it is possible to obtain by longitudinal displacement of the armature 15 automatic advance of thespark, and a constant duration of the engagement of the contacts 22 and 23 at whatever the speed.
It is also possible to modify the shape of the pole pieces of the parts 5 and 15 as well as the strength of the spring 18 so as to obtain longitudinal displacement of the part 15 in accordance with the curie of the advance of the ignition demanded by the explosion motor.
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate a modification of the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In Fig. 3, the armature 15 is provided with a groove 25 in which slides a pin 26 fixed to the pinion 27 actuating the distributer so that the wheel 27 rotates with the armature 15, but the latter can slide with reference to the wheel. 7
A pin 28 fixed in the shaft 1 acts to drive the armature 15 entering a helicoidal slot 29 'n the latter. The operation of the arrangement is the same as the preceding, when the armature 15 is attracted it rotates with respect to the shaft 1 by reason of the helicoial shape of the slot 29, the pinion 27 being at the same time displaced by a correspond ing amount.
It is to be understood that the shape 30 of the cam 3 formed on the extension 20 of the armature 15 should take into account the movement of rotation impressed on the cam. In this Way the automatic advance of the ignition may be readily obtained and a constant duration of engagement of the contacts 22 and 23 whatever the speed of the explosion motor.
The invention structional forms it is applicable to is not limited to the conhereinabove described as all kinds of electric tenerators for ignition only or for ignition combined with lighting of the vehicles or starting of the explosion motor in which a variation in the exciting current is a function of the variation in speed of the explosion motor driving the generator.

1. In an ignition system for explosion motors, a device for automatically advancing the ignition, including an armature slidably mounted on the generator shaft and operatively connected to the interrupter cam, an electric device interposed between the armature and. the distributer transmission and the interrupter, said device being actuated by the whole or part of the exciting current of the generator to move the armature and cam longitudinally of the shaft, whereby automatic advance of the ignition and a constant engagement of the primary of the ignition device is obtained, irrespective of the speed of the explosion motor.
2. In an ignition system for explosion motors, a device for automatically advancing the ignition, including an armature slidably mounted on the generator shaft and operatively connected to the interrupter cam, an electric device interposed between the armature and the distributer transmission and the interrupter, said device being actuated by the whole or part of the exciting current of the generator to move the armature and cam longitudinally ofthe shaft, whereby automatic advance of the ignition and a constant engagement of the primary of the ignition device is obtained, irrespective of the speed of the explosion motor, the whole or strength of the excitation of the generator when running light and under load at diffell'ent speeds are made to substantially coin- 01C e.
