Description

C. L. LATIIVIER. vALvE GRINDER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC-5.1917.
Patented Sept. 17, 1918.
/lvI/EN TUR l 417/776# WIT/VESSES UNITED sTATEsrrENTOFFICE.;
CHARLES L. LAQTIMER, 0E EoE'r wnnswon'rn, NEW Yoan f VALVE-Grunn'iiietf?y 'Richmond and State of New York," have invented' a new and Improved'Valve-Grin'der, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. y
My invention relates to v grinding tools, and has reference more particularly to a mechanism for grinding alvalve mechani- -ciprooate thefrack v9*and, 1n consequence,
cally in lplace of manually. y
An object of the invention is to provide a compact mechanical drive which can be,
easily accommodated on the head of a cylinder of an internal-combustion engine for engaging the valve to be ground without in,
terference with the'other parts .locatedon the head. l i Another object'of the -inventionfis to -`provide a device the oscillating strokfe'of 'which may be varied sothat the valve to'jbefgro'und may be rotated through angular distances of varying degrees.
With the above and other objects in view,-
the nature of which will..1 more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthe application, similar characters ofV reference indicate. corresponding parts in both views. A y
*Figure l is a cross section through the device embodying my invention; and
Fig. 2, a vertical section on line 2 2, Fig. l, illustrating the device' in use.
Referring to the drawings, '3 is a valveengaging head havinga stem 4 the upper part of which is revolubly mounted 1n a housing '5 which carries a ball-bearing socket 6 at the bottom. The stem carries a cone 7 which is constrained to move with the stem and which cooperates with the ball-bearingl Y vided with a dented portion 8 forming :a Y pinion. A rack 9 is mounted to slide-in a guide l0 secured to the wall of the housing 5, so that said rack is caused to slide transv ersely of the stem and meshes lwith the pinion '8. The rack 9 has a pin 11 which is connected to a' crank pin 11 by a rod 12.
The crank pin 11' is mounted eccentrically in a carrier 13 which is revolubly Specification of Letters Patent.
`the housing 5 lterminating' with a rin vthe valve is introduced.
- mounted in a suitable recess provided near turn the stem` 4 forth.and-'backl p The angular displacementof thev stem may be varied ing the carrierlB'in its recess.
Patented sept. 1v, .19118; f Application iled December. 5, 1917. Serial No. 205,507. i
' Pressure on 'the valve duringthey grinding ingrace 20 whichis `free fromv the stem.
The Hstem terminates in apballshaped head l21 which! isengaged in a socket 22. :The
socket has an extension through the top of.
which can be `easily engagedA by the 19u and, therefore,` relieving pressure from 'the valve 24.
To adapt the device. toengines of diler-` by meansv of butteriyy nuts 26 which engage pins '27 provided` on the housing and projecting through slots 28 infthe sleeve. By adjusting this sleeve onthe housing. the length of same may be variedand, therefore, the engagement ofthe' head with the valve adjusted according to the position of the valve in thev casing `of the cylinder. In cases where the valve 24 is located 'below the surface I provide grips' 29 `in the lower end 'of vthe sleeve for engaging the opening, normally occupied by the plug, through which 'his permits the locking of the housing to the cylinder casing when grinding. y
In. cases where the valve 24 is Hush or above the. cylinder casting, as, for example, in the Ford motor, then the 4sleeve 25 may rest directly on the top-ofl -the* cylinder, the weight of thepdevice and pressure of the man 23," and l Y. v and whereby the stem, withthe head, may loe, raised againstthe-resistance.o1c the spring is maintained by a spring -19 mounted on the I stem. vOne end of ,the spring rests on the y f head 3- while the other engages av hall-bearr v Operating being sufficient for maintaining the saine on the cylinder.V llie engagement of the sleeve with the cylinder .prevents the l pressure retaining theidevice onthe cylinder from being transmit-ted vto the valveas the stem is yieldable relative'to the housing 5 under the action of 'thespring 19.'
To increase the eiiciency of the device, an auxiliary spring is rovided on the valve whichv is' to be groun This spring 30 is weaker than the springy 19 but it is sutiilcienttov raisethe valve 2l from its seat when a, pull is exerted on vtlie'i'ing 23 thereof, coinpressing the 'spring 19 and not allowing the valve to disengage .from the valve-engaging head-3." Ast-lie. head is rotated during the forward 4movement of'the stem, the position of the v'al've'. relative to vits seat' will bel changed and thereby av better grind-ing of the seatiandvalve is obtained.
I claim-f3.1' K v Y1.1m con'ibination, a head for engaging a valve to be ground, a stem movable with the head, a'pinion-inovable with the stein, a
housing, accommodating the upper end of the stein, aj' rack slidably mounted in tiielious v,lng.transverselyvof the stein and engaging the pinion',vv ai. disk revolubly mounted inthe housing, a wrist p iii in said disk, a rod con- :nectingytliefivrist pin to the rack, an eccenqtricfi'irrsaiddisk carrying said wrist pin @hereby the Position ofsaid pin relative to mvthe A center o the diskv may be varied and jtl reby the'throw, and means for rotating ,h disk.'
2.' In combination, a telescoping housing,
means .for adjusting the .length of the housing, a .head for engaging a valve to be -ground, meansin one section ofthe housing for imparting an oscillatory movement tor the head, and anchoring means associated with the other V'section of the `housing for copies of this patent may be obtained for Lemme and means whereby thestein may be moved longitudinally while it isafeeiprocated.
i. In combination, a telescoping housing,
means for adjusting vthe .length of the housi ing, anchoring means at the lower end of one? ofthe housings parts, said anchoring 'means being movable transversely of theflliousiin'gg adjustment, a head for engaging a"-valveftc be ground, and means in the other,parti-'tif`- the housing for imparting an oscillatory"- inovement to the head'.
In combination, a head for engaging a'- valve to be ground, a stein movable withY the head, a pinion on said stein, a housing accommodating the upper end of the stem,
said stem being revoluble and slidalolel `in` l said housing, a rack slidably mounted inthe A housing transversely of the stein and engaging the pinion, a disk revolubly mounted iii the housing, a wrist-pin carrier mounted eccenti'ically at the margin of the disk, ineans vfor locking said `carrier -in predetermined posit-ions, a l,Wrist pin on said eccentric,a.ro'd connect-ing the wrist pin of the rack, 'means for revolving the disk, and means whereby the stein may be moved longitudinally Without interfering with the 'oscillation of the stem by the rack. 1
