COUPLING FOR FAUCETS.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. IO, i918.
Application led June 10, 1918. Serial No. 239,265.
To all lwhom z't may concern Beit known that I, BENJAMIN I-I. F. HEY- iiLANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have inyented certain new and useful Improvements in Couplings for Faucets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The present invention is directed to imrovements in couplings for faucets for cargonated beverages, and has for its object to provide means for coupling aygiven make of faucet to thecarbonated water supply pipe of any of the prevailing types of soda dispensing apparatus. In the majority of soda water fountains, only carbonated water is dispensed, necessitating the admixture of the desired syrup thereto from an independent jar or bottle, the syrup being usually poured into the tumbler by the clerk after which the carbonated water is added thereto from the fountain.y In these carbonated water dispensers different faucets have dierent sizes of couplings vfor connecting the same up to the carbonated waterl supply pipe. It is the object `of my `invention to utilize the couplings on the existin makes of supply pipes whereby I am ena led to` attach the same irrespective of the size of' the coupling to any of the well'known formsl of syrup dispensing faucets of independent make whereby a mixture of syrup and carbonated water, or carbonated water alone may be served. The advantages of theim'- provement will be apparent from the following detailed description in connection with the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of' a soda water dispensing apparatus showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged middle vertical section through the faucet intake showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 3 is a face view lof the coupling nut; Figs. 4, 5 and 6, are middle sections of the water-intake vend of the faucet showing different sizes of couplings and reducers therefor; Fig. 7 is a middle cross-section of the reducer; and Fig. 8 is a face view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a hollow standard of any suitable design which receives the carbonated water supply pipe 2 leading from any suitably charged tank or 'other Source o f supply (not shown) as wellv understood in the art. D represents a well known type of syrup dispenser or faucetv with the syrup container or jar C mounted thereon, the body'of the faucet bemg preferably made in two on more sections, the inner section 3 being the only one to which we need direct our attention. -This section is the one which is directly secured to the standard 1 being provided for the purpose with a terminal disk. or base 4 adapted to bear against the outer face of the standard, said disk having leading therefrom a screw-threaded stem 5 provided with Ja nut 6 for engaging the inner face of the wall of the standard as shown, thus firmly clamping the faucet to the standard. The
esy
upper end of the water supply pipe 2 terminates in acoupling head or flange 7 adapted to bear with its'outer face against the inner face of the perforated bottomor flange a of a screw coupling 8 by which ordinarily the pipe 2 is connected to the faucet intended for a particulary size pipe or particular size coupling, the manufacturer making the coupling correspond to the size of screwthreaded stem of his particular make of faucet. In the present embodiment of my invention I form the screw-threaded stem 5 with areduced threaded extension 5 said extension being adapted to receive any size of screw-ring 9 to which the member 8 is directly coupled, said ring 9 being threaded on the outside and serving as a reducer or bushing for the coupling 8. The bores of the couplings 8 differ in size with different makes of soda water faucets, and since-it is desirable that I be able to .connect my syrup Afaucet to-any make or size of coupling (8) usually terminating the discharge end of the carbonated water supply pipe of other manufacturera- I provide with each faucet a number of screw-rings 9 of different sizes the proprietor of the fountain discarding all rings except the one which fits the coupling 8 of his particularv make of apparatus. In Figs. 45, 5, and 6,I show dierent sizes of screw rings 9, each adapted to fit a different size of coupllng screw 8, whereby irrespective of the particular make of coupling the proprietor of the fountain may detach his water faucet and connect up my syrup-andwater faucet Ywithout `inconvenience and Pwithout loss of time. Interposed between the bushing 9 and head 7 is a gasket l() for insuring a tight joint, the length of the portion 5 and thickness of the bushing 9 being thefaucet, and one of the rings of the ,series such as to 1uoring the face of the bushing subbeing adapted t o be coupled to, af cooperating stantiaily flush with the end of the portion member terminating the Water' supply pipe 5 when the bushing is driven home against of a different make of faucet.
