Description

GEORGE W. DAY, OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIlVL' SELF AND LUTHER DAY, OF SAME PLACE.
lMPROVEMENT IN SCREENS FOR COAL-GAS PURIFIER$.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,856, dated June 11, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE XV. DAY, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Screen for Coal-Gas Purifiers; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure 1 denotes a top view of screen as constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 an end View of the same as folded for transportation.
The object of my invention is to produce a screen which is not only cheap, durable, and simple in construction, but one which presents a large or maximum area of purifying surface,
and also be capable of being folded into a small compass whenever desirable for transportation or otherwise; and my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangem ent of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully described. My invention is designed for use in gas-purifying chambers of the ordinary construction, and is to be supported upon ledges disposed on the walls of the chambers, the series of screens being arranged one over another, and each supporting a layer of lime, through which the gas is to pass in its passage through the chamber.
In the said drawing, a a, &c., denote a se ries of wooden bars or strips, which may be of a cylindrical or other desirable shape in crosssection. These strips or rods are connected by means of two or any other suitable number of flexible wires, chains, or rods, b 1), ex-
tending transversely through the several bars, as seen in the drawing. 0 c is a series of wooden blocks, of a globular or other desirable shape, which are interposed between the several bars, they being strung upon the wires or fiexile connections, and being of such thickness or width as may be desirable to maintain the bars at a proper distance apart to afford the required degree of opening or area for the gas to pass through.
My improved screen, being formed without any supporting-frame like those of the ordinary construction, not only affords a much larger purifying area than such, but can be more cheaply manufactured, while its peculiar construction enables it to be readily adapted to fit any ordinary-sized box.
Vhen in use the screens are to be laid upon the ledges of the purifying-box, andso as to abut against one another, and when not wanted for use they may be folded into a small compass either for storage or transportation.
Having described my invention, what I claim is The improved flexible or folding screen, composed of the series of slats or strips a and blocks 1) of any transverse section, arranged together as described, and united by means of flexible connections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
- GEO. W. DAY.
