Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Application filed November 30, 1917. Serial No. 204,574.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, OLGA SGI-IWARZ, a citizcn'of the United States, residing at Elmhurst, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a separable spool supporting attachment for sewing machines, and has for its principal object the provision of a device that is eflicient, simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, that may be readily attached to the usual type of sewing machine, whereby the operator thereof may be enabled to wind bobbins without discontinuing sewing.
In winding bobbins on a sewing machine the operator must now disconnect the sewing mechanism while the bobbin is being wound thereby causing a considerable loss of time. With the use of my device this loss of time will be obviated. '4
I attain this object by means of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this specification and in which:
Figure'l is a front view of the body of the usual type of sewing machine provided with the usual balance wheel and bobbin winding mechanism, (the portion. of the arm carrying the stitching mechanism being broken away) with my device operatively attached;
Fig. 2 is a front view of my separable spool supporting attachment.
Like parts are referred to by like reference characters throughout the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail the reference character A designates the arm of the usual type of sewing machine, provided with the balance wheel C and the usual sewing mechanism (not shown). A belt cover B is secured in the usual manner and has the horizontally extending hub 12. The machine is also provided with the usual bobbin winding mechanism consisting of the bobbin 8, a spindle F, a bobbin winder pulley E, worm wheel D and thread guide 10, as illustrated, the various parts being connected and operated in the usual manner. The present separable device consists of a flexible gripper 1 adapted to fit snugly over and grip tightly the extending hub 12 of the belt cover B as particularly illustrated in Fig. 1. This gripper 1 is constructed of a flexible metal or other suitable material so that it will grip tightly or cling to said hub 12 and extends downwardly thereover for a sufficient depth for the purpose mentioned but not so as to interfere with the mechanism of the machine.
The said gripper 1 is provided with an opening in the upper central portion thereof to receive a vertical rod or pin 2. Such rod 2 is riveted, by means of the rivet 3, as near flush as possible with the under side of said gripper 1 so as to insure a firm seat of said gripper on said extending hub 12.
The upper portion 5 of said vertical rod 2, being slightly smaller in circumference than the said lower portion 2, acts as a spool pin for the spool 6. A suitable washer 4 is provided as shown and acts as a seat for the spool 6 and also as a limit stop for said spool. In practice this limit stop should be such as to prevent said spool 6 from coming in contact with the belt cover B. The spool pin 5 can be constructed to extend to the various heights requisite for various sized spools, but should not extend to such a height as would prevent the machine from being closed up with the device in position.
The device is placed in operative position by placing the flexible gripper 1 over the horizontally extending hub 12. p The spool of thread is then placed on the spool pin 5. The thread is then passed down into and through the eyelet 11 of the bobbin winder thread guide 10 and then upward through the notch 13 therein and then connected in the usual manner to the bobbin. The bobbin winding mechanism is then connected in the usual manner without, however, disconnecting the stitching mechanism, and the vmachine operated in the usual manner, thereby enabling the operator to wind the bobbin without discontinuing sewing.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A separable spool supporting attachment adapted to fit over and grip the horizontally extending hub of the belt cover of a sewing machine, comprising a flexible gripper, a vertical extending rod secured thereto the upper portion thereof being adapted to support a spool, means to retain said spool in an operative position and means for op- I zontally extending hub of the' belt cover oferatively connectingsaicl spool with the bobbin winding mechanism of said sewing maa sewing machine, comprising a flexible gripper, a vertical extending rod secured thereto the upper portion thereofl beingadapted to- I support a spool, means to'ret'ain said spool man operativeposltion and'means to openatively connect said spool with the bobbin wmchng-mechamsm of a-- SGW1I1g-1I1aCh111e whereby sald bobbln wlnding mechanlsm and the sewing mechanism of said machine 15 may be operated simultaneously. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
