IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFFLETREE-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,822, dated J une 11, 1812.
Specification describing an Improved Whiffletree-Fastening, invented by CHARLES AH- RENBECK, of N avasota, in the county of Grimes and State of Texas.
The invention relates to the means by which single-trees are attached to a double-tree; and consists in hinging two hooks to a staple that is attached to one end of a double-tree, while .said hooks are held together at their bases by a recessed and intermediate guard-plate.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a top view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section of same in line at w of Fig. 1.
A represents a double-tree, in which is inserted the legs I) b of a staple,B and a, a portion of a single-tree. This staple B is made of iron, bent to form a rightan gle at two points, each equally distant from a different end of the rod. 0 is a holder, tubular at each end 0, and fitted on one of the legs of said staple, while it is recessed in the middle, at C. D D are two hooks, each made preferably fiat on one side and provided with an eye, d, in a plane at right angles to that in which the hooks By this construction the guard-piece 0 prevents the hooks from changing their relative position with respect to each other, while their freedom of motion upon the staple is not at all impaired. The ring of single-tree is first placed on one hook, carried up on its shank, and then placed over the'end of the other hook, when the flat sides of both hooks are brought together. As both hooks are pivoted and move together when jarred or jolted, no motion whatever can enable the single-tree to become separated from the double-tree. This separation of the single-tree from the double-tree often occurs when the ordinary hook connection is used, or when a double one is employed but one of the hooks is rigid.
E is a stay piece, to whose eye 0 is attached the stay-chain which connects with axle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The whiffletree-fastening, consisting of the two hooks D D, holder 0 c, and staple B, applied together and between the double and single trees, as and for the purpose set forth.-
2. The two hooks D D, both pivoted to the staple of a double-tree, as and for the purpose described.
3. The stay piece E, hooks D D, and holder 0 0, all held to the double-tree by a single staple, B, as and for the purpose described. CHARLES AHRENBEGK. Witnesses:
