One of the objects of the invention is to provide an engine-starting apparatus comprising a comparatively high speed-reduction effected through a single pair of gears. Another object is to provide a simple and compact" arrangement of driving shaft,
- roller-clutch and pinion. Another object is to provide an apparatus of the above type in which a pinion of minimum diameter comparedwlthi the diameter of the drivingshaft, may be utilized without sacrificin mechanical strength or durability.

The invention accordingly consists in the I features of construction, combinations ofelements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the follow ing claims.

In apparatus of this type where the'fl'y-wheel is engaged to the starting mechanism, the satisfactory speed-reduction ,in the starting device mustbe. effected by having the motordriven pinion small enough, or to effect a part of the reduction between fly-wheel and pi'nion and the remainder through addi- '-tional mechanism. The present invention relates more especially, to increasing the speed reduction by decreasing the size of the motor-driven pinion.
Referring now more particularly to Figs.

Apparatus of the character described, comprising, in combination, a motor, a motor shaft, an engine-driven gear, a. pinion mounted on the motor shaft adapted to mesh with said gear, and a power-transmitting connection between the motor shaft and the teeth of said pinion independent of the body of said pinion.

Apparatus of the character described, comprising, in combination, a motor, a motor shaft, an engine-driven gear, a pinion rotatably mounted sleeved directly on the motor shaft adapted to mesh with, said gear, a power-transmitting connection between the motor shaft and the teeth of said pinion, andmeans adapted to cause said pinion to travel into and out of mesh with said ear.
8. Apparatus of the character described, comprising, in combination, a motor, a motor shaft, an engine-driven member, a motordriven member mounted on the motor shaft adapted to make power-transmitting connection with said engine-driven member, an
over-running clutch comprising a member secured tothe motor shaft and a member revoluble upon said shaft, and a powertransmitting connection between said lastnamed member and said motor-driven member at a point laterally offset from said engine-driven member at all positions of said motor-driven member.

Apparatus of the character described, comprising, in combination, a motor,-an eninc-driven member, a motor-driven mem- Eer adapted to coact with said engine-driven member and sleeved on the motor shaft, and power-transmitting means comprising an overrunning'clutch and having a portion extending radially beyond said motor-driven member through which power is transmitted to the latter.
10. Apparatus of the character described,
comprising, in combination, a fly-wheel, a
gear on said fiy-wheel, a motor-driven pinion, and an over-running clutch comprising a member secured to the motor shaft and a member revolubly mounted on said shaft and provided with an inwardly extendin portion adapted to engage the teeth of sai pinion.

Apparatus of the character described, comprising, in combination, a fly-wheel, a gear on said fly-wheel, a motor-driven pinion sleeved' on the motor shaft, and an overrunning clutch comprising a member secured to the motor shaft and a member revolubly mounted on said shaft and provided with an inwardly extending portion adapted to engage the teeth of said pinion.

Apparatus of the character described, comprising, in combination, a motor, an engine-driven gear, a motor-driven pinion, an over-running clutch comprising a; member secured to the motor shaft and a member revolubly mounted on said shaft and provided with an inwardly extending portion adapted to engage the teeth of said pinion continuously, and means for moving said pinion axially to effect a driving engagement between said pinion and said gear.

Apparatus of the character described, comprising, in combination, a motor, a motor shaft, an engine-driven member, a pinion sleeved directly on the motor shaft, an over-running clutch comprising a member secured to the motor shaft and a mem ber revoluble upon said shaft, and a powertransmitting connection between said lastnamed member and the teeth of said pinion.

Apparatus of the character described, comprising in combination, a motor, an engine-driven gear, a shaft driven from said motor, a pinion on said shaft normally out of mesh with said gear and adapted to be moved into mesh therewith, and means driien from said motor and adapted to embrace and drive said pinion.

Apparatus of the character described, comprising in combination, a motor, an engine-driven gear, a shaft driven from said motor, a pinion on said shaft normally out of mesh with said gear and adapted to be moved into.mesh therewith, and a device driven from said motor fitting about said pinion and interlocking with teeth thereon.

Apparatus of the character described, comprising in combination, a motor, an engine-driven gear, a shaft driven from said motor, a pinion on said shaft normally out of mesh with said ear and adapted to be moved into mesh t erewith, and a device driven from said motor fitting about said pinion and interlocking with teeth thereon, said pinion being slidable within the member fitted about the same. Apparatus of the character described, comprising in combination, an engine-driven gear, a pinion, means adapted to move said pinion into and out of mesh with said gear, and a driving member for said pinion titted about and interlocking with the teeth thereof and with respect to which said pinion is slidahle in an axial direction.
