PARACHUTE.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MARTYNA, a subject of the Emperor of. Austria, having declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oil City, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parachutes, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device by means of which aviators may readily alight from an air craft with safety at such times for instance as during the destruction of the air craft by fire or the missiles of an enemy during the time of war.
Al further object of the invention is to provide a parachute by means of which persons may jump from tall buildings to the ground in the event of a fire or other danger, the device being also serviceable in jumping from elevated points upon mountains or observation balloons.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a parachute of simple construction adapted to be secured to the body of a person when engaged in aerial navigation and ready for immediate use for safely descending to the ground whenever desired such as in the event of an accident.

The desirability of a life-saving device for aviators is well known and my invention provides a parachute having a frame 10 and a canopy 11, the structure being readily worn by the person when making aerial flights so as to be able to safely descend to the earth at any time.
The frame 10 is formed of metal rods or bars in T-shaped arrangement, while the canopy 11 which is elongated and substantially rectangular is centrally mounted longitudinally upon the top bar 12 of the said frame. The canopy 11 arches slightly from the braces 14: to the opposite free ends 23 thereof forming intermediate arcuate sections or portions 24c adapted for catching or pocketing air during the operative downward flight of the parachute when in use.
The device is adapted to be mounted upon a persons back with the crosspiece rod 17 adjacent the shoulders while straps 20 secured to the rod 17 adjacent its point of connection with the pieces 16 are adapted to be secured to the arms of the wearer. A belt 21 at the lower end of the upright rods 15 of the frame 10 is adapted to be tightly secured around the wearers waist while a strap 23 also mounted upon the bars 15 is adapted to encompass the chest of the wearer.
From this detailed description of the device, the manner of attaching the same to a person will be apparent while a person drop ping through the air will be supported by the canopy 11 to slowly and safely descend to the ground beneath. While the structure possesses great strength, the same is light in weight and can be readily worn without interfering with the use of the arms and legs of the aviator in managing the air craft while the personal safety of the aviator is insured.
What I claim as new is 1. A parachute comprising a T-shaped frame, cross braces upon the frame, an elon gated canopy mounted on top of the frame secured to said cross pieces and having curved end portions, stay cords for the opposite ends -of the canopy, arm-encircling straps carried by the top portion of the frame, and body-encircling straps carried by the upright portion thereof.
2. A parachute comprising a T-shaped frame formed of bars, transverse braces car= around the canopy 11 to which are secured I ried by the top bar of the frame, an elongated canopy centrally positioned upon the top of the frame secured to said braces and having upwardly curved portions from the said braces to the opposite free ends of the canopy, attaching pieces secured to the bot tom bar of the top portion of the frame, cords connected between said pieces and points adjacent the opposite ends of the canopy, spring connections between the said 10 cords, and straps secured to the frame adapted for mounting the device upon the back of a person.
