UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
JAMES H. HOWARD, OF STONEHAM, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOE TO HIM- SELF AND SAMUEL W. OHAMBERLIN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN BURNlSHlNG-MACHINES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,772, dated June 11, 1872.
I, JAMES H. HOWARD, of Stoneham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Burnishing -Machines for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification Nature and Objects of the Invention.
The nature of my invention relates to improvements on rotary end-burnishers for boots and shoes, consisting in giving to the endburnisher and its shaft a lateral movement in a right angle to the center line of said shaft and end-burnisher, for the purpose of giving a drawing stroke to the end-burnisher, and also for the purpose of reaching the whole surface of a boot or shoe heel or other parts of boots and shoes, as will now be fully shown and described.
On the drawing, Figure l is a ground plan. Fig. 2 is. a central longitudinal section over the line A B taken on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section over the line 0 D taken on-Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section over the line E F taken on Fig. 3.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the drawing.
This my invention is an improvement on my former patent of February 13, 1872, and differs from that invention in this respect, that whereas I then had my burnishing-shaft revolving in stationary bearings, I now give a lateral movement to the end burnisher, shaft, and bearings at the same time asthe burnisher and shaft are revolving around their axes.
Formerly 1 gave a lateral movement to the boot or shoe now I may dispense with such lateral motion of the boot and shoe, and obtain the same advantages by moving the endburnisher laterally, and thus dispense with a great many moving parts on the machine, by which the machine is made very much simpler and better than formerly.
As before stated, I use my end-burnisher either cold, or heated by means of a lamp, gas-jet, 850., as the nature of the work may require.
The machine may be driven by hand. foot, steam, or similar power, as may be practical.
On the drawing, a is the burnishing-shaft, revolving in movable bearings b b, as shown. The bearings b b are free to move laterally in guides c 0 attached to the upper parts of the standards 61 d, as shown, or constructed in a similar and suitable manner. On the forward end of the shaft to is secured the burnisher e, the end f of which is kept in contact with the boot or shoe during the process of burnishin g. On the shaft ais attached one or more eccentric cams, g g, guided in their motions between stationary guides h 76 attached to the upper part of the standard cl d, or otherwise, as may be desired. Enough space is left in the guides h h at top and bottom, so that the cams g 9 shall have no tendency to raise or lower the shaft a; but the horizontal distance between the inside of the standards h h is made equal to the diameter of the cam whereby the shaft a is moved laterally forward and back during each revolution.
I do not, however, confine myself to this kind of arrangement only, as I can also make an arrangement whereby the shaft to may be moved laterally more or less than one time for each revolution. Neither do I confine myself to a strictly linear motion of the rocking shaft a, as a slightly-curved motion could easily be imparted to the said shaft a to equal advantage.
On the rear of the shaft to may be attached a cord or belt pulley, i, to which the power may be applied from another cord-pulley, k, or in any other convenient and suitable way.
A gas-jet or lamp, l, or suitable heating apparatus, may be placed under the end-burnisher 0 f when it is desired to work with a heated burnisher.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, 1 wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- 1. A revolving end-burnisher moved laterally or in a right-angled direction to the center line of the shaft and burnisher, in a manner and for the purposes herein shown and described.
2. The construction and arrangement of the shaft to, cams g g, one or more, with their guides h h, and the movable bearings b b, for the purpose of giving a lateral motion to the end-burnisher cf, as herein set forth and described.
JAMES H. HOWARD.
