Be it known that I, PHILIP T. SHAnPLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Davids, in the county of Delaware, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Centrifugal Separators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the separation of substances of different specific gravities by centrifugal force, more particularly to the clarification of liquids or the separation of solids or semi-solidsfrom liquids when the substances are in small amounts, and it is characterized by the use of arevoluble bowl having sections of diflere'nt diameters, the upper section of larger diameter for holding the separated solids preferably being separable from the lower section, which preferably has a closed bottom for retaining the liquid. g
The improvements are conveniently embodied inan inner bowl of comparatively small capacity, which is adapted to be inserted in and withdrawn from the bowl of a usual type of separator, but a single bowl machine may be used.

- The machine shown in Figs.-l to 3 of the drawings, for the purpose of illustrating a form in which my invention may be used, comprises a frame 1 provided with the case 2 in which a bowl 3 is suspended and revolved by a shaft 4 carried by the bearings 5, the bowl being removable from the case by uncoupling it from its supporting shaft and removing the pan 6 from its detachable connection with the ease. The bowl bottom 7, which is removable, has thereon the hollow boss 8. This boss is revoluble in the part 9 car Specification of Letters Patent.

The inner bowl 11, with its contents to be separated contained in. the bottom section 12, is placed in the bowl 3 by removing and replacin the bottom 7 The assembled machine is then operated, with the result that the contents of the inner bowl rises therein, the heavier solid orsemi-solid matter separating from the liquid and forming an outer stratum which lodges in the upper section 15. Upon the completion of the operation, the clarified liquid falls back into the section 12. Upon dissociating the parts of the machine and removing the inner bowl, the parts 12 and 15 may be separated; with the clarified liquid held inthe section 12 and the matter separated therefrom held in the section 15. i
As illustrated in Fig. 4, a special bowl 20 may be substituted for the regular typebowl 3, n a machine of the desired capacity, such special bowl being suspended and revolved bv the spindle 4t and having the bottom boss too 20 by separating the parts 22 and 24, which are then connected. The. howl having been Placed in the machine. and revolved at the r omred speed. the contents rise therein and the constituent parts of different specific gravities are separated. The heavier solid or semi-solid matter lodges in the sectlon .24, and the lighter matter falls back into the section 22 upon completing the operation, when the bowl is ren'ioved from the machine and. its parts with their respective contents are separated.
The bowl may be provided with means for holding and may hold a container for the substances-to be separated. A form of such means i Illustrated in Figs. 5 and (3, in which lhe bowl 11 is provided with the radial wings 27 converging downwardly and providing bearings for supporting the downwardly tapered cup 28, adapted to be inserted and withdrawn through the bowls top opening 29. The, wings serve. the purpose not only of supporting the cup. but also of accelerating the moven'ient ot the substances and facilitating their separation.
The substances to be separated having been placed in the cup and the latter being held in the desired position by the wings, upon operating the assembled machine, the substances contained in the cup are carried over its top and thrown outwardly by centrifugal force, the heavier solid or semisolid matter lodging in the upper bowl section 15 and the lighter liquid falling into the section 12, thus keeping the intermingled substai1ccs,-or the solid matter to be removedffrom the section 12, and avoiding the lodgmcnt, of such solid matter therein' The substances .having been separated within the bowl 11, the sections 12 and 15 are separated, and the clarified or purified liquid and the solid matter are removed.
Having djescribed my invention, I claim: ,1. In a centrifugal machine, a revoluble vertical bowl having an imperforate circular wall, with a bottom section and a top section of larger diameter than'said bottom section,
said bottom section being adapted for delivering its contents to said top section to effect separation therein'when said bowl is revolved about its'axis and said top section being adapted for retaining therein separated solid or semi-solid matter while permitting the liquid to be drained therefrom into said bottom section, in combination With means for supporting said bowl and revolvingit about its axle.
2. In a centrifugal machine, a revoluble vertical bowl having an imperfora-te circular wall with separable upper and lower secd ow nw ard l y tions, the upper section being of larger ameter with an inwardly extending lower partadapted for supporting solid or semisolid matter separated therein by centrifugation while draining the liquid therefrom and the lower section being adapted for discharging substantially all its contents into said upper sect ion by centritugation, in combination with means For supporting said bowl and revolving it about its axis.
'3. In a centrifugal machine. a revoluble vertical bowl. means tor revolving said howl about its axis. and a second bowl with an impcrtorate wall held in and adapted to be removed from said bowl first named, said second bowl having an upper section of larger diameter than and adapted to drain its liquid contents into a lower section while retaining solid or semi-solid matter separated t'rom said liquid and said lower section being adapted to deliver its contents into said upper section when said bowl is revolved.
4. In a centrifugal machine. a revoluble bowl, means for revolving said bowl about its axis, and a second bowl telescoped in and removable from said bowl first named. said second bowl having a closed bottom and an in'ipert'orate circular wall with a top section adapted toretain solid contents, of larger diameter than a bottom section thereof, said bottom section adapted to receive the liquid contents from said top. section.
5. In a centrifugal"machine, a revoluble tubular bowl, means for revolving said howl about its axis, and a second bowl held in and removable through an end ot said bowl first named, said second howl having an imperforate circular wall with an upper scction adapted to retain solid contents. of larger diameter than a lower sect ion thcreot. adapted to receive the, liquid content from said upper section, said upper section having inwardly extending ends.
6. In a centrifugal separator, the combination with a revoluble bowl having an enlarged upper section containing wings, of a container supported in said bowl and 'adapted for so holding sul'istances that they may be thrown therefrom into section by centrifugal force.
7. In a centrifugal separator, the combination with a revoluble bowl containing converging wings, with a downwardly tapered container supported in said bowl by said wings.
