GOLLAPSIBLE BOX.
Patented Sept. 3, 1918.
Application filed January 2, 1917. Serial No. 140,233.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J AnEsWILD, a subject of the King of Great Britaln and Ireland, and residing at 1 St. Pauls Crescent, Camden Town, in the county of M1dcllesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a SPBClfiCtL- tion.
This invention relates to collapsible boxes.
According to this invention the collapsible boX comprises abottom, means on the bottom to retain the sides and ends in the set up position, means for connecting the sides to the bottom and the lid to the sides or meansfor connecting the bottom to the lid,
such as straps pivoted to the bottom, means such as sockets on the ends or sides to hold the sides and ends together and a lid furnished with means for attaching the free ends of the straps or other devices for. fastening the parts of the box together. In the collapsed condition the bottom holds the sides and ends folded fiat and some 'aux1l1a1'y fastenings serve to attach the lid to the bottom.
And in order that the invention may be readily understood reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of a box constructed according to this inventhe bottom of the box Fig. 18 is a sectional detail to an enlarged scale of a corner of thebox, the section being taken on the line VIII.VIII Fig. 9.
Fig. 9 is a detail planof a corner of the box also to an enlarged scale.
Fig. 10 is a plan of the bottom of the box with the sides and ends laid therein and also Figs. 1, 2 and 4t) one 6, be ng screwed or riveted at b to the bottom a while the other member Z) stands Fig. 11 shows inperspective the complete box in the collapsed condition with the lid secured to the bottom.
In carrying the invention into eifect and according to the construction shown in the drawings, the bottom a of the box (Figs. 5, 6 and 7) which may be of wood, strawboard or other suitable material, is provided with a binding or edging Z) Z) of angle iron (see one member, the lower up all around the bottom in such a manner as to practically form a box with very low sides. This binding is preferably made as shown in two pieces and to strengthen the bottom, the two ends of the flanges b of the binding are riveted together at 0 (Fig. 4) unless the binding is stamped out of sheet metal in one piece. The bottom is furthermore furnished with a series of upstanding clips or projections (Z, 6 and 7 parallel to the vertical member 6 of the binding or edging and these clips are suitable bent angularly so as to embrace the edge and both sides of the bottom a, being held on to the bottom by. friction between the bottom and the binding I) b or the clips may be held by some of the rivets or other means for attaching the binding to the bottom. The object of these clips (Z c f is to prevent the bulging inward of the sides and ends of the box, if subjected to rough usage. The sides 9 g are preferably plain and the ends it h are furnished with external angular bindings c 2" which resemble that at the bottom. These angular bindings may be closed at the top and as shown in the detail Figs. 8 and 9, an extension i of the binding por tion 2' is bent over at the top while a similar extension 5 of the binding portion 2" is also bent over and the two extensions as shown in Fig. 9 form a butt mitered joint. The ends of the box are moreover furnished with internal bindings 2' 2'. which with the external bindings i 2' form housings or sockets. The doubleangular bindings and the ends It are suitably connected together by bolts and nuts 7s. The ends of the sides 9 fit into the sockets formed by these double angular bindings and thus form the connected sides andends of the box. They are then suitably dropped into place on the bottom, between the vertical members 6 of the bottom binding 1) b and the vertical members of the clips cl, 0, f. The vertical members Z) of the bottom binding, or two of them opposite to each other each have pivoted thereto, at Z, one or two straps m, whichare preferably of metal. The ends of the straps, remote from the pivots, are suitably provided with lateral and more or less rectangular slots m, each adapted to receive a turnbutton n, revolubly attached to the metal binding 0 of the lid p. In addition, the bottom binding 6 on one side of the box is conveniently connected by means of the pivots Z, two short straps, lugs or links 9 similarly furnished with slots 9, and on the other side are also connected by means of the pivots Z two short hinged hasps 9 also similarly slotted. The lid is made practically in the same way as the bottom with an angular binding 0 riveted or bolted thereto at s and has connected thereto, by riveting or otherwise the turnbuttons a corresponding in number and position to the straps 97%.. When the lid is in position, the slots in the straps are made to engage with the turnbuttons andthe latter,
when partially rotated, securely hold the bottom and top and the intervening together.
To fold the box for storage or return empty, the straps m are released from the turnbuttons, the sides 9 and ends it are taken apart, the sides g are laid in the bottom, theends It are then laid thereon and the straps m are turned or folded down alongside the bindings Z), as shown in Fig. 10, and the lid 2) is put on top, as shown in Fig. 11.
sides The short hasps r are then connected to the turnbuttons a on one side of the lid and the short pivoted links 9 are connected to the turnbuttons .n on the opposite side of the lid 7 loose walls and adetachable lid, the bottom provided with an angular metal binding fixed thereto and having an upstanding member forming low walls to inclose the lower portions of the said loose walls in the erected'position, means for detachably connecting the loose walls together within the metal binding, the lid furnished with an angular metal binding having a depending member to inclose the upper portions of the loose walls of the box, metal straps, approximately as long as the box is high, pivoted to two opposite low walls of the bottom, said straps having slots at the ends remote from their pivots, short metal straps pivoted to one of the low walls of the bottom, said shortstraps having slots at the ends, remote from their pivots, slotted hinged lugs pivoted tothe'opposite low wall of thebottom and straps pivoted to one of the low walls of the bottom, turnbuttons pivotally attached to opposite sides of the metal binding of the lid and adapted to engage with the slots in the longer metal straps when the box is erected and with the slots in the short I binding fixed thereto with an upstanding member forming low side and end walls to inclose the lower portions of the said loose sides and ends in the erected position, the said ends provided at their vertical edges with inner and outer angular metal binding the projecting members of which form re cesses for the engagement therein of the loose sides, the lid furnished with an angular metal binding having a depending memher to inclose the upper portions of the loose sides and'ends of the box, metal straps, approximately as long as the box is high, pivoted to two opposite low side walls of the bottom, said straps having slots at the ends remote from'their pivots, short metal "straps'pivoted to one of the low side walls of the bottom, said short straps having slots in the ends, remote from their pivots, slot ted hinged lugspivoted to the opposite low side wall of the bottom and turnbuttons pivotally attached to opposite sides of the metal binding of the lid and adapted to engage with the slots in the longer metal straps sides and ends are inclosed between the bottom and thelid, substantially as set forth.
' 3. A collapsible box comprising a bottom, loose sides and ends and a detachable lid, the bottom provided with an angular metal binding fixed thereto with an upstanding member forming low side and-end walls to inclose the lower portions of the said loose sides and ends in ,theerect'ed position, clips fixed to the said bottom and adapted to resist any tendency of the loose sides and ends to'bulge inward, the said ends provided at their VBIUCZLlQdgGS with inner and outer angular metal binding theprojecting members of which formrecesse's for the: engagement therein of tlieloose sides, the lid fur nished with an angular metal binding having a depending member to inclose the upper portions of the loose sides and ends of the box, clips fixed to the said lid and adapted toresi'st any tendency of the loose sides and ends to bulge inward, metal straps, approximately as long asthe boxis high,
pivoted to two opposite low sidewallsof thebcttom, said straps'having slots at the ends remote from their pivots, short metal 7 straps pivoted to one of the low side Walls of the bottom, said short straps having slots at the ends remote from their pivots, slotted hinged lugs pivoted to the opposite low side Wall of the bottom and turnbuttons pivotally attached to opposite sides of the metal binding of the lid and adapted to engage with the slots in the longer metal straps when the box is erected and with the slots 10 EDWARD JAMES WILD.
