To all it may concern Be it knownthat I, SYLVESTER VooRHms, acitizen' of the United States, resldent of Enderlin, county of Ransom, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Main-Line Telegraph- Repeaters, of whichthe following is a specification. 1 1- 1 L In the operation of a telegraph line, it has been customary to provide the repeater with a local battery, thereby increasing the initial cost and the costof maintenance otthe line. "l The object of my present invention 1s to provide a repeater which will dispense entirely with the useofalocal battery and effect a considerable saving in the cost of installation and maintenance of the repeater.
A further object is to provide a repeater I having provision for ease of adjustment to compensate for varying climatic conditions. Other objects of the invention will appear .from the following detailed description.
The invention consists generally 'in a re- 'peater having means for utilizing the main line battery :of a local battery.

Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view illus- .trating the repeater and circuit when the line is not in use, both east and west l1ne keys being closed. In each of the three figures it is assumed that A is connected to a west. going line, and A to an east oing line; which lines are e ordinary type of teleg- The repeater may be considered as insertedinto the line between these sections and connected therewith at X and X.

Conductors ;W and W connect the circuit closers M andM with the circuit closers D and D and with the line wires A and A through the coils C and C, and permanent are mounted upon opposite sides of the armature L for holding it against the spring contact closers M and M to keep them out of engagement with the contacts N and N.
With the circuit and apparatus in the condition as shown in Fig. 1, should the west operator open his key, an actuation of the parts of the repeater is accomplished and the first circuit changes established are as shown in the diagrammatic view illustrated by Fig. 2. i When the circuit of the west line is opened by the west operators key, the battery which has been energizing the magnet I is out off by the opening of the west operators key, the former holding circuit being as follows:

A main line telegraph repeater comprising a pair of main line magnet coils, one in circuit with the east going line, the other in circuit with the west going line, a pair of line controller coils, a resistance coil in circuit with each of said main line magnet coils for shunting a part of the current into said line controller coils, contacts controlled by said main line magnet coils for selecting said line controller coils, and circuits controllable by said main line magnet coils from either the west or the east line for actuating said line controller coils.

A main line telegraph repeater comprising a pair of main line magnet coils, an armature associated with each of said magnet coils, an east line circuit including one of said magnet coils and a resistance coil, a west line circuit including the other of said magnet coils and a resistance coil, a pair of line controller coils, an armature controllable by either of said line controller coils, contacts controllable by the armatures of said main line coils for shunting said line controller coils across said resistance coils selectively.

A main line telegraph repeater comprising a pair of main line magnet coils, one of said coils being in circuit with a resistance coil and an east going line, the other of said coils being in circuit with a second resistance coil and a west going line, a pair of line controller coils, saidresist'ance coils shunting a portion of the current through said line controller coils, a circuit and contacts controllable through the operation of the east line circuit for actuating one of said line controller coils and rendering inactive the other of said line controller coils, a second circuit and contacts under control of said west line circuit controlling the other of said line controller coils and rendering said first line controller coil inactive, an armature associated with said line controller coils and controllable by either of said coils,
and means associated with said armature for holding said armature in either of two positions in which it is drawn by one of said line controller coils until it is actuated by the other of said line controller coils.
6. A main line telegraph repeater comprising main line magnet coils, armatures and contacts co-acting with said coils, a pair of line controller magnet coils, an armature co-acting therewith, a circuit co-acting with said main line magnet coils and said line controller magnet coils and including two resistance coils, said circuit including contacts for actuating one of said line controller magnet coils on the opening of one end of the main line in which the repeater is connected and also contacts for actuating the other of said line controller magnet coils when the other end of the main line in which said repeater is connected is opened, said controller magnet coils being actuated by being bridged across said resistance coils. In a main linetelegraph repeater the combination of a line controlled magnet coil, an armature and contacts controlled by said coil and a main line magnet coil, an armature associated therewith, a pair of springs positioned adjacent to said main line coil, the forward of said springs carrying a contact and the rearward of said springs carrying two contacts, a contact on said armature adapted to make contact with one of said contacts on said rearward springs,a back contact adapted to make con tact with the second of said contacts on said rearward spring and a circuit associated with said coils and said contacts for energizing said line controller coil on the first closing of said contact between said rear ward spring and said back contact whenever a main line operator takes control of the line.
