MACHINE FOR JOINTING STAVES AND LIKE OBJECTS.
Specification of Letterslatent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1918.
Application filled November 24, 1917. Serial No. 203,715.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, EDWARD W. ROBIN? invention being toso construct the cuttershaft-carrying and driving mechanism of such machine as to permit the cutter tofollow the contour of the edge of the stave, or other object, without loosening the belt whereby the cutter shaft is driven.
This object we attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of sufficient of a stave jointing machine to illustrate our invention, and
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
In the drawing, 1 represents the rotary cutter for acting on the edge of the stave or other object, and 2 the cutter shaft which is adapted to turn in bearings 3 at the ends of forwardlyprojecting arms 4: on a vertical standard 5, the latter having a flanged base 6 which is free to move back and forth in an undercut bearing 7 formed on a :fixed member 8 of the machine. l
In addition to the forwardly projecting arms 4E the standard 5 has a rearwardly projecting arm 9 which carries a bearing 10 for a post 11, the latter being also, by preference, carried in a bearing -12 on the standard 5 and being provided at its rear end with a head 13 fromv whichr project, in opposite directions, studs 111 on each of which is mounted a pulley 15 for the Guidance of the belt 16 whereby the pulley shaft 2 is driven.
In machines of the typeto which our invention relates the cutter shaft 2 is usually vertical while the counter-shaft above the 7 on the cuttery machine from which the shaft 2 is driven is usually horizontal, hence each run of the driving belt, in passing from the pulley on the counter shaft, must make a quarter turn, which is provided for by the guide pulleys 5.
As all three of the pulleys 15,' 15 and 17, move as a unit with the standard 5 it'follows that allV movements of the latter necessary to permit the cutter 1 to follow the contour of the edge of the stave are effected without v tightening or loosening the driving belt, Vso
`that the conditions under which the cutter shaft 2 is driven are alwaysY the same.
Tightening of the driving belt necessary to maintain proper driving contact of the same with the pulley 17 is effected by longitudinal movement of the postI 11 in the bearings 10 and 12, said post being retained in position after adjustment by tightening a clamp screw 18 in the bearing 10, as shown in Fig. 1. We claim:
l. The combination of the cutter shaft 'and its driving pulley with a movable standard having forwardly projecting arms providing bearings for said cutter shaft and a rearwardly projecting arm with bearing thereon, a post adjustable longitudinally in said bearing, a head on said post, studs projecting in opposite directions from said head and belt directing pulleys rotatably mounted on said studs.
2. The combination of the cutter shaft and its driving pulley with a movably mounted standard having forwardly projecting arms with bearings for said cutter shaft, and a rearwardly projecting arm with bearing thereon, a post fitted to said bearing and to another bearing in line therewith on the standard, a head on said post, studs projecting in Opposite directions from said head,
.belt-directing pulleys rotatably mounted on said studs, and means for retaining the post in differentpositions of longitudinal adjustment. I In testimony whereof, we have slgned our names to this specification.
EDWARD WILLIAM ROBINSON. j CHARLES JEWELL ROBINSON.
