Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A 01, 2}, 1918 Application filed April 28, 1917, Serial 1104165301. Renewed July 24, 1318 Serial No. 246,451; 7
The present invention relates tol plows and more particularly to'plows for digging trenches or ditches, and an object of the present invention is to provide apair of dirt spreading wings for plows of this character which will evenly distribute the ploweddirt and prevent the latter from becomingbanked on each side of the ditch.
A further object of the present invention isto provide a pair of adjustable wings of the character aforesaid which may readily adjust themselves to the height of the ditch and readily pass over stones or other obstructions in their way of travel.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ditch plow embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; and,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail side elevation.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification. with the further understanding that while the drawings show a practical form of the invention, the latter is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings. but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention.
Like and corresponding parts are indicated by similar reference characters throughout the several views.
The numeral 1 indicates a plow beam having a pair of handles 2 secured to the rear end thereof and a clevis attachment 3 at the forward end to. which the draft animal may be attached. for propelling the plow over the ground.
Pivot-ally connected as at 4: to the beam 1 'is a pair of arms 5 forming a lever and to the lower end of this lever is. connected the gage wheel 6? for regulating in the usual manner the depth of the ditch which the plow is to make. Arranged upon the rear end of the beam is asegmental'rack bar 7 to. which is. pivotallyconnecteda hand lever 8- and this hand lever 8j is connected to the arms 5 by means of the bar 9. This hand lever 8 is for moving the gage wheel 6 to the desired position and a manually operated pawl 10 is carried by the lever 8 and adapted to, engage the rack bar 7 for retaining the lever 8. in the desired adjusted position. i
Suspended from the beam 1 by means of the front and rear vertical rods 11 and 11 is a longitudinally extending bar 12, the forward end 18 of which is beveled or inclined, as shown in Fig. 1 and forms the point of the plow. This bar 12 carries the plow shares 1 1 and the mold boards 15, and it also carries a pair of adjustable wings 16 which extend on each side thereof, and are located in rear of the mold boards. The forward ends of these wings '16 carry the eyelets 17 which loosely engage the vertical rod 11 and connecting the wings 16 is a transverse bar 18. Connecting the beam 1 and the bottom bar 12 of the plow is the vertical beam 19 having a reduced flange or guide rib 20 formed along one edge, this flange engaging between a pair of projecting lugs 21 carriedby the transverse bar 18.
From the foregoing it is obvious that when the plow is being pulled over the ground it will dig the ditch in the usual manner and the mold boards 15 will deposit the plowed ground to each side of the ditch. In so-depositing the plowed ground at each side of the ditch the same will ordinarily form a bank and the purpose of the wings 16 is to spread this plowed ground so as to prevent banks from being formed. As the wings 16 are vertically movable they will directly below and parallel with the beam and having its forward end beveled to form the point of the plow; vertical rods connecting said beam and said bar and suspending the latter from the former; means carried by said bar for depositing the plowed-up earth at opposite sides of the ditch being dug; and a pair of verticallymovable, forwardly-converging wings eX- tending to opposite sides of said bar and located in rear of said depositing means so as to sweep over and spread out the earth deposited thereby at the sides of the ditch and prevent it from banking up; said wings having their front ends slidably engaged with the adjacent vertical rod, whereby they are enabled to automatically rise bodily and pass over obstructions in their path. y
2. In a ditching plow, the combination, with a beam; of a longitudinal bar disposed directly below and parallel with the beam and having its forward end beveled to form the point of the plow; vertical rods con- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for obstructions in their posite sides of said bar and located in rear of said depositing means so as to sweep over and spread out the earth deposited thereby at the sides of the ditch and preventing it from banking up; and a crossbar connecting the rear portions of said wings and provided with a pair of spaced lugs; the front ends of said wings being slidably engaged at opposite sides of said guide rib, whereby the wings are enabled to automatically rise boldlily and pass over pat Signed at Ste.
