Be it known that I, ARCHIE F. PARTCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Applying Paste to Box Ends, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a paste applying apparatus and more particularly to a type of apparatus designed for applying paste to the ends of boxes so that the same may be placed in a condition for application of a label to the pasted surface thereof.
The invention has for its principal objects to provide a construction having a novel form of paste reservoir; one wherein the paste applied to the surface of the end is removed from a point adjacent the side edges thereof, and one wherein the pasted ends are automatically stacked in a novel manner.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partly in section, of the preferred embodiment of my improved apparatus.

Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, viewed in the direction of the arrows.
Referring more particularly to the several views of the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts, 1 indicates the uprights of a suitable supporting frame carrying longitudinally disposed parallel spaced'angle rails or tracks Specification of Letters Patent;

2 which extend longitudinally the full length thereof, said tracks providing a horizontal conveyer. The box ends to be pasted are positioned in a suitable magazine 3 open at its lower end above the conveyer 2 at one end of the same, and the lower edge of the front wall L of said frame terminates at a point immediately above the rails 2, the distance between the lower edge of said wall 11 and the horizontal portion of the respective rails being slightly greater than the thickness of a box end, permitting but one box end to be removed from the magazine at a time.
Extending upwardly from the wall 4l are the paste receptacle side walls 5 converging at their outer ends, as at 6, and said walls are connected at their lower edge by a curved bottom wall 7, overlying the conveyer rails and terminating short of the front ends of said side walls 5.
Paste is supplied to the receptacle through a connection 8 leading from a centrifugal pump 9, the feed opening of which connects through a pipe 10 with the paste receptacle adjacent the lowest point thereof. It will be apparent that on the operation of the pump 9 the excess paste will be withdrawn from the paste receptacle, passed through the pump and resupplied thereto.
Extending transversely over the conveyer rails 2 and above the same is a rotatable shaft 1l mounted in bearings 12, and carrying a suitable cylindrical brush 13 which is of a length to lie intermediate the converg- -ing ends 6 of the walls 5 in contact therewith and is of a diameter to contact with the forward edge of the bottom wall 7 and thus provide a closure for the front wall ofA the paste receptacle. In contact with said brush is an idler or paste removing roller 14 preferably positioned above the receptacle, the same being rotatably mounted'in bearings 15 and lies in contact with the bristles of the brush 13.
Pivotally mounted, as at 15', to swing on a vertical axis with their rear ends positioned one in rear of the free outer ends of ene of the walls 5 are the scraping members 16 which extend horizontally in parallel relation over the rails 2 of the conveyer.
Cooperating with the outer ends of the respective scrapers 16 are the leaf springs l?, which force the free ends of said scraper-s into tight frietional contact with the pasted ends as passed below the saine. The springs connect with adjustable tension members 18 carried by a transversely disposed fiame 'i9 arranged above the tracks i2v forming the conveyer, and carried b v the side walls thereof. rllhe members 1S are mounted in guide slots which permit of swinging movement of the outer ends of the scraper members toward each other to adjust the same to confine the paste to any given area across the box ends.

The mechanism for reciprocating the feed member 2l consists of a lever QS fulcrumed as at 29 at its lower end, and provided with a lslot 30 at its upper end in which is received a pin 3l carried by a bracket 3Q on the underside of the feed member.
The lever :2S carries within its length a tubular guide or sleeve fulcrumed to the lev r. at and extending through said, guide or sleeve is an operating rod carrying the spaced collars 36 and 37 positioned one at each side of the sleeve 33, permitting free movement of the rod relative to the lever. The shaft carries on its end a band wheel 42 around which extends a driving belt 4B driven from a suitable band wheel tet on a shaft rotatably supported in bearings #t6 carried by the central support l.

The operation of the shaft 45 transmits power to the shaft 40, causing movement of the arm 39, which during the first half revolution thereof from the position in Fig. l, moves the rod 35 through spring 35 drawing said lever 2 forwardly, causing the latch or pawl 23 to engage the lowermost end 27 in the magazine and slide the same therefrom longitudinally of the tracks 2 forming the runway to a point to pass beneath the brush 13, at which time paste is supplied to the upper surface thereof, as 'the brush is continually rotating. As successive ends are removed from the magazine and conveyed toward the chamber, the successive removal of the lowermost end from the magazine causes a longitudinal movement of said removed ends beneath the paste applying roller 13, under the scrapers 16, and over the label applying' station A to a point beneath the chamber 52. At the station A an operator stands who manually applies the desired labels t-o the pasted surface of the ends as successively propelled past the station and toward the chamber 52. On the neXt one half revolution of the shaft 40, the cam 59 starts in its upward movement raising the platform 54 to lift the end thereover upwardly within the chamber 52, over the dogs 60, and then to permit the lowering of the platform to a position as in Fig. 1. Along this path the rod 35 is moved longitudinally to slide the feed member rearwardly to operative position, as in F ig. 1 of the drawings.
If desirable, a tray 61 may be positioned beneath the paste applying roll 13 to retain4 any excess paste applied to the ends and removed therefrom by the Scrapers 16.
In my improved construction I eliminate the endless conveyers commonly employed and convey the ends longitudinally of the runway by forcing the same in contact with each other by an intermittent movement. I also provide a. paste receptacle wherein the paste applying brush forms one wall thereof, thus Vinsuring a uniform and ample supply of paste to each end and by my improved stacking means am enabled to remove the labeled ends Afrom the runway and place the same. in stack formation without ruffling the freshly pasted labels on the surface thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. An apparatus for applying paste to box ends for the applying of labels thereto, comprising a frame, a horizontally disposed runway supported thereon, a magazine at one end thereof foi containing a stack of ends to be pasted and labeled, a receiving chamber at the opposite end thereof for receiving the finished pasted and labeled ends, means intermediate said magazine and receiving chamber for applying paste to the ends as conveyed from the magazine to the receiving chamber, said runway provided with a. label applying station intermediate said receiving chamber and said paste applying member, and reciprocating means for successively removing the lowermost end from the magazine and for forcing the removed ends longitudinally of said runway with their edges in engagement into contact with the paste applying means and thence in to said receiving chamber.
2. An apparatus for applying paste to box ends for the applying of labels thereto, comprising a. frame, a horizontally disposed runway supported thereon, a magazine at one end thereof for containing a stack of ends to be pasted and labeled, a receiving chamber at the opposite end thereof for receiving the finished pasted and labeled ends, means intermediate said magazine and receiving chamber for applying paste to the ends as conveyed from the magazine to the receiving chamber, said runway provided with a. label applying station intermediate said receiving chamber and said paste applying member, reciprocating means for successively removing the lowermost end from the magazine and for conveying the same longitudinally of the runway with their edges in engagement into contact with the past-e applying means and thence into said receiving chamber, and a vertically movable means cooperating with said receiving ehamber for successively lifting the ends moved thereinto upwardly into said chamber in stack formation, and means for retaining the stack in elevated position within said chamber on the withdrawal of said vertically movable means therefrom.
3. An apparatus for applying paste to box ends for the applying of labels thereto, comprising a horizontally disposed runway along which the ends to be pasted are conveyed, a paste receptacle positioned above said runway and opened at one side across said runway, said receptacle provided with a bottom over said runway, a rotating paste applying member providing a closure for the open wall of said receptacle and for removing paste therefrom and applying the same to the box ends as passed beneath the same, means for conveying the ends longitudinally of said runway, and means for rotating said paste applying member.
4. An apparatus for applying paste to box ends for the applying of labels thereto, comprising a horizontally disposed runway along which the ends to be pasted are conveyed, a paste receptacle positioned above said runway and opened at one side across said runway, a rot-ating paste applying member providing a. closure for the open wall of said receptacle and for removing paste therefrom and applying the same to the boX ends as passed beneath the same, means in frictional contact with said brush in the direction of the rotation of the same after leaving said paste receptacle for removing the excess paste therefrom and depositing the same within said receptacle.
