WATER-TUBE BOILER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIC E. ARNOLD,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Water-Tube Boiler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to boilers and particularly to water tube steam boilers, and has for an object the provision of a boiler which will be'a safe and positive steam generator while admitting of easy access to. the various parts for cleaning and inspection.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a boiler with all the tubes formed straight and varying only in length so that any tube may be replaced from a straight tube of the'longest length used in constructing the boiler, the tube of course being cut off as much as desired.
A further object in view is to provide a boiler with straight tubes and tube receptacles in the steam drums associated with the tubes, thus obviating the necessity of distorting the drums.
A still further object of'the invention is to provide a number of drums and connecting tubes and arrange these parts in such manner as to present a simple, strong and effective boiler which will utilize the maximum amount of heat produced by the furnace associated with the boiler.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by numeral, l indicates a base or foundation of any desired kind upon which is arranged the front wall 2 and the rear wall 3. A furnace or fireplace 4 is also provided which is formed with an ash door 5 and a fuel door 6. The particular construction Specification of Letters Patent.

' At the rear of the boiler are arranged drums 10, 11 and 12. Drum 10 is supported by any suitable means, as for instance saddle 13, which will allow a movement'bodily of the drum 10 and associated parts, such -movement beingjcaused by the expansion and contraction of the drum, the water plpes and associated parts. Drum 11 is supported by any desired number of pipes 14, while drum 12 is supported by pipes 15,
pipes l land 15 providing communicatlon between the drums, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby there is a proper circulation of water between all of the drums, a row of horizontal pipes 16 bein rovided for connecting drums 8 and 12. The drums 7 and 10am connected by a plurality of pipes 17 while drums 8 and 11 are connected by pipes 18. A baflie member 19 is arranged over the top row of pipes 17 and extends from drum 7 to adjacent drum 10, while above pipes18 a deflecting or bafiiing member 20 is provided which extends from drum 11 to a point adjacent drum 8. This causes the products of combustion from the furnace 1' to first pass upwardly and engage the forward ends of pipes 17 and then follow these pipes to a point adjacent drum 10. After'passing drum 10 the products of com- -bustion pass along and over the pipes 18 substantially any shape and size whereby the same mav be easily repaired and new baffiing members provided.
Each of the drums is provided with a plurality of tube receptacles 23, as shown in Fig. 6, said receptacles being stamped or otherwise formed from suitable material and fitted into the various drums so as to receive the pipes 17 and 18. The central pipe of the group of pipes 18 is fitted 1nto the drums 8 and 11 as the same engages these drums normal to their surface. In order that the remaining pipes 18 may be parallel with the central pipe the receptacles 23, are provided. Drums 7 and 10 are also provided with receptacles, as shown in Fig. 6, while drum 8 is provided with a slightly modified form of receptacle 2-1 which has a section 25 for holding one of the pipes parallel with the remaining pipes 18 and receiving pipe 16 at an angle whereby pipe 16 may extend in a horizontal line from drum 8 to drum 12. By providing the various receptacles 23 all of the pipes are entirely straight though of different lengths. By providing an extra supply of pipes or tubes the supply is made up of long tubes which are cut to the particular length desired and. then fitted into the receptacles. This will necessitate the keeping of only a comparatively small supply as any of the pipes in the supply may be used at any point in the furnace. By providing the receptacles 23 and 24: a strong positive structure is presented without necessitating the special construction of the drum. The drums may be formed in any desired manner though preferably welded along theirlongitudinal seams. Each of the drums is formed preferably with a removable door or manhole 26 which is held in place in any suitable manner, said manhole acting as means whereby the interior of the drums maybe inspected at any time and the ends of the tubes properly expanded during the insertion of a new tube or during the. repairs of the boiler.
During the operation of the boiler the water in the pipes or tubes 18 and 19 is heated and the circulation is upwardly from drums 10 and 11. As the'water enters drum 7 the same passes to drum 8 through pipes 9 and there the steam generated will be freed from the water or will pass with the water through pipes 16 to drum 12 where it will be liberated. The water from the tubes 18 will also follow this course so that there will be a supply of steam in drum 8 and also in drum 12, drum 12. being the drum from which the steam is drawn off. A pair of connecting pipes 27 connect the upper part of drums 8 and 12 so that the steam from drum 8 may freely pass to drum 12 and be led out from drum 12through the discharge opening 28. In caseit'is desired to use superheated or dry steam, oneor more pipes 29 are connected with drum 12 and are brought down preferably eXteriorly of the furnace and passed through the side walls to'a header 30. The header 30, to-
gether with header 31, holds in place a plurality ofsuperheating tubes.32.,' Thelsuperheated steam is led froi'n header; 31 by pipe 33 to a discharge point 34:. from whence it is directed to the point of utilization.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4;, a plurality of boilers may be arranged in one housing and if desired may be connected up to act as a single boiler. It is also evident that only one set of drums and associated parts could beused instead of two as shown in these figures. Arranged in the side wall 35 (Fig. l) of the housing are apertures 36 and 37 whereby the nozzle of an air blast may be inserted and the soot and other matter removed from tubes '18 and 19. i In addition to this means of cleaning the furnace, a plurality of doors 38 are provided through which an operator may iass when itis desired to operate manual y' on various parts of the furnace. It is' evident that the various drums and other parts forming the boiler per'se may be, provided with any suitable form of housing, as: for instance; a
housing or casing formed of masonry as shown in the drawings, or other suitable covering may be utilized. There isi also preferably provided a drain pipe 39 which communicates with the lower part of the drum 10. This pipe is provided with a suitable valve and may be led, to any desired discharge point. In forming. the various drums, the same may be riveted together, longitudinally, but are preferably welded. The ends are also preferably welded in place, where by a stro ng tight structure is provided. In fitting the various receptacles in place in" the drums the same are preferably Welded and. the tubes iitted'in placeinanydesired manner, as for instance, by. being expanded at the ends.

In a water-tube boiler, a pair of front I and rear horizontal drums, the front drum being at a higher elevation than the rear drum, a bank of inclined tubes connecting said drums, a fire boX arranged beneath the higher ends of said tubes, a baflle arranged along the top of said bank of tubes and extending from the front drum to near the rear drum for directing the gases from the firebox along said tubes, a pair of front and rear upper drums, a bank of tubes connecting the last mentioned drums, circulator tubes connecting the front drums, circulator tubes connecting the rear drums, means for directing the gases along said second mentioned bank of tubes and to a discharge point past the circulator tubes connecting the rear drums.
