' TRACY G. WESTINGHOUSE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
, REDUCED-DRAFT DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
- "Be it known that I,-TRA'GY Gr. noose, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inRe-' eflicient means whereby the draft from the boiler to the flue may be retarded or controlled so as to economize fuel, and to derive the greatest possible amount of'benefit from the fuel used in the furnace. v a
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is capable of application to various types of boilers now in use, which is of simple and inexpensive construction, which requires no attention after once being installed, and which will prove thoroughly eflicient in the attainment of the ends for which it is designed.
With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1, is a longitudinal sectional view through the forward portion of a locomo tive boiler and illustrating the application of a draft reducing device embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 ofFig. 1,
Fig. 3, is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a boiler of the stationary type and illustrating the application of a device embodying my invention, and
Fig. 4L, is a view similar to Fig. 3 and illustrating the modified form of the device.
Referring now to the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 tional form of locomotive boiler is shown, wherein the tubes 5 of the boiler project v I through the flue WVus'rmeand 2 thereof, a eonvenj Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 27, 1918- Application filed June 1, 1916, Serial No. 101,072. Ren e wed March 13, 1917.
Serial No. 154,592.
the products of combustion from the furnace to the smoke box at the forward end of the locomotive to escape through the stack sheet 6 thereof to direct 7. As is well known, the draft through the furnace and fines is greatly accelerated by the escape of the exhaust steam from the locomotive cylinders into the smoke box, and to retard or check the draft through the flues and furnace to derive the greatest amount of benefit from the fuel expended, and at the same time to allow of sufficient draft through the boiler to maintain a proper hot fire, a shell or drum 8 is arranged forwardly of the boiler and projects into the smoke box of the locomotive through which the products of combustion pass to escapethrough the stack 7 This drum is preferably of cylindrical form, constructed of sheet metal of foraminous or perforated formation. The drum is tapered from one end to the other, or of substantially frusto-.
conical shape, the larger open end being of the same contour and slze as the flue sheet "6 of the boiler. The periphery of the drum is supported in equidistant spaced relation to the walls of the locomotive boiler by the brackets 11 as shown. As the products of combustion pass through the flue, they will enter the drum, and by reason of the latter tapering throughout its length and being restricted at its forward end, the draft will be materially checked, whereupon the heat ordinarily wasted by escape through the stack 7 will be held in suspense within the boiler to greatly increase the temperature therein. While the draft is thus checked or reduced, suflicient exit from the boiler is permitted to maintain the proper fire within the furnace, and to permit of the escape of smoke and dust therefrom.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings there is shown an application of the frusto-conical drum applied to a high pressure vertical boiler, and,
the effect upon the draftfrom the boiler to the fine in this form of the device is suistantially the same as that in the above described form. In Fig. a of the drawing I have illustrated the draft reducing drum used in connection with low pressure boilers. In this form of the device I may arrange a swinging damper plate 12 at the reduced end of the drum to control the flow of the products of combustion therefrom. This damper plate is of the pivoted type, having pintles 13 projecting from the edges thereof and. seated Within suitable sockets at the drum end. An arm l-l projects from the damper plate, to the extremity of which an operating handle let is connected. In this form of the device, when the damperis moved to close the reduced end of the drum, the draft through the furnace will be materially checked, whereupon the fuel is greatly economized. It will be observed, however, that the smoke and gases are free to escape through the foramiuous walls of the drum to the flue.
lVhile I have illustrated and described a particular or preferred embodiment of the invention, I wish it to be understood that various changes may be made in the minor details of construction without from the spirit of the invention.
hat is claimed is: 1 A draft reducing device for boilers, comprising the combination with a forward flue sheet and a smoke box and stack, of a frusto-conical drum surrounding the outer face of said flue sheet and having its smaller end open to the smoke box at a point between said flue sheet and said stack, whereby products of combustion are partially checked within the drum and then delivered through said smaller end to the stack.
2. A draft reducing device, for boilers,
departing comprising the combination with a forWard' flue sheet and a smoke box and stack, of a frusto conical perforated drum having its larger end Wholly surrounding said flue sheet and its smaller end open to the smoke box between the flue sheet and the smoke stack, said frusto conical drum receiving all of the products of combustion from theflues, and partially checking their passage through the smoke stack and then delivering the products of combustion through its smaller endto the stack.
3. .A draft reducing device for boilers, comprising the combination with a forward flue sheet and a smoke box and stack, of a frusto conical perforated drum having its larger end wholly surrounding said flue sheet and its smaller end open to the smoke box between the flue sheet and the smoke stack, said frusto conical drum receiving all of the products of combustion from the flues, and partially checking their passage through the smoke. stack and then delivering the products of combustion through its smaller end to the stack, and a damper fitted in the smaller end of said drum and operative to regulate the flow of the products of combustion through said smaller end In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
