To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, JOHN R. FLANNERY, BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD, and ETHAN I. Dooos, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh,in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to means for denoting the condition of staybolts for boilers,the object of the invention being to provide means whereby an attendant may, upon inspection of said means, ascertain the condition of the bolt.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view representing an embodiment of our invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view, and Fig. 3 is a view of a slight modification.
1 represents a staybolt having a tell-tale bore 2 and the inlet end of this bore may be slightly tapering, as indicated at 3.
A tube or container 4 is located within the bore 2 and made preferably slightly less in diameter than the diameter of said bore so that, in the event of rupture of the bolt,
moisture entering the bore may find its way into the tube through perforations 5 in the walls thereof.
The tube 4 is supported within the bore 2 by means of a plug 6 of suitable material, such as refractory element similar to clay, to which said tube is attached and said plug serves as a closure for the tube and also lfoii the tapering end of the bore 2 of the .o t.
The tube 4 contains (under normal conditions) a quantity of soluble material 7, such, for example, as salt.
Under normalconditions when the bolt is whole, inspection of the material in the tube 4 (which latter may be readily removed from the bolt for this purpose) will disclose the material therein in crystalline form or in solid form and thus denote that the bolt is in good condition.
Should a rupture occur in the bolt which would permit the entrance of moisture into the tell-tale bore, such moisture would enter the tube 4 through the perforations 5 and dissolve the material 7 contained within said tube. If the tube be now inspected it will be found to contain little or no crystalline or solid material and this fact will denote the ruptured condition of the bolt.
Instead of providing the tube 4: with numerous perforations as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, we may employ a tube 8 bent up from a piece of flat imperforate metal and formed with an elongated slot -or opening 9, as shown in Fig. 3, through which the moisture entering the bore 2 of the bolt may pass into the tube 8.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by EettersPatent, is:
1. The combination with a stay bolt hav ing a tell-tale bore, of a container remov ably supported within said bore and in communication therewith, and soluble material within said container.
2. The combination with a staybolt having a tell-tale bore, of a tube within said bore and communicating therewith, means for removably supporting said tube and closing the end of the bore, and soluble material within said tube.
3. The combination with a staybolt having a tell-tale bore, of a plug normally closing said bore and removable therefrom, a perforated tube supported by said plug and disposed within the bore of the bolt, and soluble material within said tube.
4. The combination with a staybolt having a telltale bore, a removable container within the bore, a soluble material in the container and a removable plug for closing the outer end of the bore.
