CHALKLINE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1918.
'l Application filed Mayi, 1918. Serial 110.233,281.
Line Holders, of which the following is a' specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
`'Ihis invention relates to chalk-line hold ers which are used by carpenters, builders and other constructors, and the general object of the invention is to provide a chalkline holder having a very convenient form and soconstructed that the chalk-line maybe ordinarilywound thereon, unwound toV any extent required and then engaged with the holder so as to prevent further unwindv.ing of the chalk-line in case the holder should be dropped from the work where it is being used.
l Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
Figure 1 is an elevationof my improved chalk-line holder;
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a view showing my chalk-line holder in use.
Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that my chalk-line holder comprises a body 10, having eyes at its opposite ends, the eyes being designated 11 and 12 respectively. The middle of the holder is provided with a perforation 13 and a'chalk-line 14 may be connected tothe holder through this perforation. The body is narrower at its middle than at its end so as to provide convenient reel upon which the chalk-line may be wound and the perforation 13 permits the nail or other pin 15 which is attached to the end of the chalk-line holder, being thrust through the perforation.
In the practical use of this invention, the chalk-lineI is fastened at one end as'by the pin or nail 15' to the part of the work upon which the chalk-line is desired to belaid and when the chalk-li-ne is unwound to any desired extent, then the line is passed through one or another of the notches 16, which are formed in the eyes l1 and 12. By engaging the line with Aone or the other of the eyes, it
will be obvious that the line cannot becomey accidentally further unwrapped or unwound from the holder and that if the holder be accidentally knocked ofi' `a building, or dropped from the work, the line will not become further unwound, and it will not become necessary to further rewind the line upon the holder, with the trouble involved therein. By enlarging the ends of the body 10, the line 111 is prevented from slipping off of the body.
My device may be very conveniently made of aluminum or like material, so that it may have an attractive form, but I' do not wish to be limited to this, as itis obvious that it may be made of any suitable material. If made of metal, the body may be stamped with the name or the initials of the user, so that it may be readily identified, or with the name of a firm who desires to use the device as a novelty for advertising.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
A device of the character described comprising a body having relatively large eyes at its ends, the middle portion of the body forming a reel, the wall of each eye being formed with anotch or opening extending into the eye, and a chalk-line attached to the body between the eyes, the middle of the body having a perforation to receivean attaching pin on the end of thechalk-line. In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presenceof two witnesses.
WILEY GREEN PHILLIPS.
