AMBULANCE.
Application filed June 5, 1917. Serial No. 173,038.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, HENRY Pnzzn'rrr, a citizen of Italy, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inAinbulances, of which the following is a specification. 1 1 i 1 a Thisinvention relates to that class of ambulances, in which a large number of wounded may be transported on stretcher beds with despatch and with as little annoyance to the wounded as possible.
The chief object of my invention is to provide an improved ambulance body adapted to receive stretcherbeds from alongside of the ambulance body,to transport and deliver the beds at their destination without in anyway disturbing. the occupants of the beds from the moment they are placed on thebeds. t a 1 Another object of my invention is to produce an, ambulance capable of containing a large number :of wounded in stretchers, which may be carried therein in a systematic, comfortable and sanitary manner, and may be individually loadedinto or removed from the vehicle .expeditiouslyand with a minimum of exertion and consequent jar and. distress to the wounded. 1
My invention comprises a body of rectangular box form, capable of being mounted on an ordinary automobile chassis, and having slotted shutters in its sides, which are adapted to open outwardly and upwardly to admit a stretcher bed ina horizontal position longitudinally of the open side of the body, the body being provided interiorly with pivotally supported arms adapted to be swung outwardlyto receive or deliver a stretcher bed alongside the body, and means for raising and lowering the stretcherbeds as may be necessary. T
With the above and related objects. in view, my invention. comprises the construe-- tion, combination and arrangement ofparts hereinafter described, an embodiment whereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and is embraced within the scope of the appended'claims. l a
In the said drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a preferred form of my im proved ambulance; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a stretcher bed adapted to be transported by my ambulanceg Fig 3 is a artial side view of the ambulance, partly roken Specification of Jltters Patent.

away, and showing one stretcher in position interiorly of the ambulance, and 1 another stretcher as it is hoisted alongsidethe ambulance Fig. 4 1s a cross section through the ambulance body; of i the stretcher bed handle; Figs. 6, 7 and sectional views of a ambulancez l Referring more particularly to the draw mgs for a' detail description of my invent1on:-10 represents the ambulance body, shownin Figs. 1, 3 and 4, the sides of which are provided with longitudinal openin s.
1 represents shutters hinged to the body above its openings, each shutterbeing adapted to swing outwardly into a horizontal position. 12 represents braces adapted to prevent the shutters from closing the openings, said braces being removable to permit ofthe shutters "closing the are of asize to admit of the passing of a stretcher bed in a horizontal and longitudinal position.
Interiorly of the body 10, to the front, back and on the opposite sides of the middle and of a removable 8 are side, plan and modified form of my division 13, are mounted brackets 14, keyed on rock shafts 15 to swing, when the shafts are turned, interiorly of the body in position Fig. 5 shows adetail openings. The openings to be held by the stops 16, said brackets being adapted to swing outwardly of the body,
when the shafts are turned in an opposite direction, and are provided with lugs 17 adapted to be intercepted by the frame of the body to hold the brackets projected outwardly of the body 10, as at w. The brackets 14 are arranged in pairs on the opposite sides of an opening opposite a shutter, and are provided with horizontal sockets 18. A stretcher bed 20, mounted on legs 21, is provided with trunnions 22 adapted to be received by the sockets 18, so as to hold a bed suspended between a correspondingpairof brackets 14.
Each bracket is provided with sockets 23, adapted to be engaged by a bar 24, for operating a pair of brackets to carry a stretcher bedfrom a position outwardly of the body 10to a position inwardly of said body or the reverse, as shown in Fig. 4.
In order to hoist a stretcher bedfrom the.
projecting portions carrying pulleys 26, over whiclicrun ropes or chains 27 adapted for attachment to the trunnions on the opposite sides of a stretcher, bed, s id ropes v be ng guided by pulleys 29', and are adapted to'b'e wound on drums 80, by a crank 31, whereby a bed is hoisted into the position convenient for the trunnions to'enter the sockets of the crackers; as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 4, the trunnions beinglprovidedi withv recesses for engagement by pins 28 which are suspended froinithe free ends'oftheropes orghains 27, When the slides 25 are. inside the, body 10, the pins 28 are projected through eyes as shownon the right of Fig. 4, and when the slides are .to be projectedin position toh istE-a stretcher bed, the pins are. removedffrom theieyes, passed through the slots 32' (F'gi'lhand by pullingion the i, ropes or chains, the slides arepulled through I 20 said openings 32, the pins 28, of a corresponding pair of ropes or. chains arcinserted in the sockets of the ;opposite trun- 'n'ions 22 of a stretcher, and the stretcher hgisted alongside a corresponding opening between a ,pair of brackets 14, and the sitretcherfswung in'sidethe body ofthe amb lance byme ofa-bar 24. we 7 ,From the above it will be readily understoodthat the ambulance may be loaded with provided with a central space to accommodate ,a number of wounded who are able to stand, said space also permitting a nurse or physician togive assistance to such of the wounded require immediate attention. I he; ambulances a'reprovided. with steps 34 from whichtheshutters llcan be reached, onthe steps may be used to carry attendants, orderlies orslightlywvounded. T Having thusdescrib dmy invention, what I claim as new and desireto protect by Lett r r -c lla;T s,v 7 s 1 .,,In combination an ambulance body provided with a side opening, pivoted brackets, within said body feachhaving an H npwardly-opening socket for supporting a swinging stretcher, an'd a stretcher provided at' each endjw th a centrally located pintle a apted t engage aid socket.
I amb lajnce provided {with a side opening, a paircf interconnected brackets pl otally supported on the i side of th body and adapted to be projected through the opening and upwardly open sockets in said brackets pivoted withint lapbody, and adapta swiiiging stretcher directly therein. w 3 111 an ambulance body provided with a side opening, a pair of interconnected brackets pivoted within the body, a nd adapted tobe projected through the opening, stops for sustaining 'thebrackets in both their inward and outward positions, said brackets having upwardly open sockets for the reception olf the pintles of:- a:swinging stretcher. 4:. The combination of an ambulance body provided with a side opening and a detachable stretcher carried by the body and adapted to pass through said-opening, brackets pivoted within the body for supporting said stretcher and adapted to be turned outwardly to project'through the side opening, and-means located vertically above each of said brackets for hoisting the stretcher, said means being adapted to be moved out and in, in line with the bracket; beneath it."
' 5. An a1nbulance body provided with an opening,.brackets adapted to project through the openingpivotally supported inside the body, a-shaft carryingthe brackets, means inside the body to prevent the shaft from turning when the brackets are in a given position-inside the body, said brackets being adapted to be held by the body when projected through said opening. I
'(igIn an ambulance body provided with a side opening, a pair of stretchensupporting brackets pivotally mounted within the body andadapted to be turned outward through said side opening, means for causing said brackets to turn in unison, stops on the body for sustaining said brackets in their inward position, a single socket on each bracket for the reception of a stretcher therebetween. and stopson the brackets for contacting with the body' and supporting the brackets in their outward position. I
(7; In combination an ambulance body with side openings in vertical alinement, stretcher supporting brackets pivoted within each end of saidopeningsand adapt d to be projected therethrough, a hoist within the body above each vertical line ofbrackets, and means for sliding said hoist outwardly inthesame vertical plane that the bracket beneath it is turned into outward position, whereby stretchers may behoist'ed conveniently-to said brackets to be readily mounted therein. v a
