This constructionk prevents to a great extent tar'being deposited in the lateral fluesr 13. In Fig. 6 similar gas up-takes 45 arelo'cated within the kiln. The 11p-takes 15 connectk with a main gas duct 16 which lies along the side ofthe kiln below the ground level.v The main gas flue 16 extends to the end of the kiln where it is connected tofagas-producer 17 by a pipe 18. It is to beY understood that when the kiln is constructed in a double battery, with two rows of compartments, or en bloc, the main gas duct v16 extends along both sides of the kiln. By means of this construction all of the compartments maybe supplied with gas vfrom a v .single or common gas pro ducer. The supply of gas from the main gas duet 16 to the individuali 11p-takes 15 is controlled by valves 19 operated by a chain or other flexible connectionsv20. To permit the valves 14 and 19 to kbe conveniently set when the operator is observing the condition of the re, the flexible connections 2O are run over pulleys 21 and are extended to a point adjacent to peep holes 22 of the kiln where they maybe secured by suitable hooks 23. In the construction shown in'Fig. 6l this access may be had through a cap 46. At one side of the kiln the lateral {draft flues 33 yare provided with ports 36 which are adapted to be connected, by means of a hood 30 before referred to, with ports 37 of a main draft flue 38. The main draft flue 38 is connected to the stack 27 or any lother suitable draft appliance such as a fan (not shown). To equalize the pressure of the gases in the flues 7 and 31, the feather walls 8 are provided with ports 35. In addition to heating the air which supports combustion the cooling compartments may supply waste heat to be used in connection with a drier (not shown) for the green ware. In this arrangement the heated air is confducted from the compartment to a waste heat flue 39 which in the present instance lies below the main draft {iue 38. The waste heat flue 39 is conducted to the waste heat drier above referred to in any approved manner. The flue39 is provided with ports 40 which are connected to the compartments from which the waste heat is extracted by va pipe 41 which enters any one of the compartments through the wickets 42 in the door 5' thereof., The air used in waste heat drying enters the compartment through the opposite door or from an adjacent compartment. The kiln may be provided with any accepted form of water-smoking arrangement which may consist of a fine 43 arranged on top of the kiln and adapted to be connected to the various compartments by pipes 44.
The operation of the kiln is as follows:
The various compartments are filled with the ware progressively and are 'fired suc- Ycessively, the' ware being placed in the kiln in a compartment in front of and removed from a compartment in the rear of the compartment being fired. l The ware in front is vpreheated by the sulfur gases or products of combustion from the burning compartment, while the air which supports combustion is preheated while passing through the cooling and previously burned compartment in the rear of the compartment being .fir-ed. The' air which supports combustion enters the kiln through the doors 42 of the extreme rear cooling compartment, the wickets thereof being broken open for that purpose. The air then passes forward lV l 0 i `:terapie through the cooling compartments through the perforated floors 6 and flues 'E' which connect all of the compartments in a successive manner. When the air reaches the burning compartment it ismixed with the gas (which enters `the kiln through down takes 12) at the burners 11 at which `point the combustion is incipient. After passing through the ware the spent or "sulfui' gases pass out of the burning compartment through its perforated iioor Where they are conducted to the next and succeeding preheating compartment. When the sulfur gases reach the final preheating` compartment they are conducted out of the kiln through one of the ues 33 and to a stack or other draft appliance.
