WALTER F. KAsrnabr Minnen" MIivNEsorA,
To I'AIRMONI' GAs `ENGINE Eaten. Patented Aug. 13, 191s.
. Application IedAugust 1,8, 1916.1` Serial No. 115,701.
To all whom, t may concern."` j Be it known that I, `VVAL'rnn F. KASPER, a
citizen of the United States, resident of Fairmont, county of Martin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to binders having a source of power mounted on the machine for operating a portion of the mechanism, such as the aprons, reel, knotter, etc.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a means for. supporting the source of power, such as a gas engine, which` can be applied to any style or type of binder, the attachment being adjustable and capable, therefore, of being fitted to raise or lower the engine base or adjust it forward or backward or laterally, as the connections to the mechanism to be operated require.
A further object is to provide an engine supporting attachment which can be applied to a binder not originally constructed to be used with a motor.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.
'Ihe invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specication,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a binder, illustrating the application of my invention thereto,
Fig. 2 is a detail view, showing the preferred means for securing the attachment to the frame of the binder,
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the device detached from the binder.
In the drawing, 2 represents the frame of the binder, having the usual U-shaped support 3 secured thereon upon which the tool box and the drivers seat (not shown) are mounted in any suitable manner. 4 re resents brackets having holes 5 therein t receive U-shaped bolts 6 which clasp the bars of the frame, as indicated in Fig. 2, and are adjustable vertically thereon by means of said holes and are inwardly and upwardly inclined. The upper ends of these brackets have clamps 7 for a shaft 8, and clamps 9 and 10 are secured to the shaft and are connected to the lower ends of rods 11 and l2, the upper ends of which are secured to a bar 13 and a brace 14: of the binder frame. A brace 15 connects the clamp 16 on the shaft 8 with the U-shaped support 3, as shown in Fig. 1. These braces and rods are adjustable .in their clamps on the shaft 8 and permit the raising and lowering of the shaft to vary the elevation of the engine supporting platform thereon. On this shaft 8 I provide a platform 17 having depending brackets 18 which straddle the shaft 8 and are secured thereto by means of bolts 19. This base 17 has a flat upper surface and is provided with slots 20 to receive bolts 21 which secure the engine base 22 to the base 17, providing a rm, substantial support for the motor and at the same time permitting its position to be changed through the adjustment of the connections of the shaft 8 with the frame of the machine.
It will be noted that the shaft is capable of rotary adjustment in its bearings and consequently the motor may be tilted to level it on the machine or change the position of its drive shaft with respect to the mechanism to be operated.
This attachment is of such construction that it can be applied to any style or type of binder without change in construction, the parts are adjustable, so that the base for the motor can be raised or lowered until the desired elevation is reached, and the proper connections can be made to the parts operated from the motor. The form of the supporting brackets may be varied, and in various ways the details of construction can be modified and still be within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with a binder frame, of a shaft mounted for vertical adjustment thereon, a base mounted on said shaft and having an upper surface forming a support for a motor, and braces connecting said shaft with said frame.
2. The combination, with a binder frame, of a shaft mounted for vertical adjustment thereon, and a motor base mounted for" rotary adjustment on said shaft and having an upper surface adapted to receive a motor.
3. The combination, with a binder frame, of brackets mounted thereon, boxes carried by said brackets, a shaft having bearings in In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set lsaid boxes and mounted for longitudinal o1' my hand this 25th day of July, 1916. rotary adjustment therein, braces connecting 'WALTER F. KASPER. said shaft with said frame, and a motor base Vitnesses:
5 mounted on Suid shaft and having un uppei' THEO. CLEMETSON, surface adapted to receive a motor. CLARA MoLs'rAD.
