CEMENT-DUMP BAILER FOR cit- ELLS;
To all whom'z't may concern:
Be it known'that we,RoBnR'r LEE BURNS and GEORGE IRWIN KENIsToN, citizens of the United States, residing atTaft, in the county of Kern and State of California,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cement-Dump Bailers for Oil-Wells, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to dump-bailers used in the well-boring art, to convey cement or other material to the bottom of oil-wells without subjecting it to liability of admixture with the well fluids while being lowered therein, and to leave the cement or other substance at the bottom of the well when the bailer is withdrawn. The object of our invention is to provide a simple and efiective device of this character, adapted to safely carry and protect its contents while being lowered, and to automatically open when it reaches the'bottom of the well in order to dump said contents as it is being lifted therefrom.
To this end our invention consists in the novel dump-bailer which we shall now fully describe by reference to the accompanying ,bailer, showing it in position for its dumping function after having been opened by reaching the bottom of the well and just starting to be withdrawn.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same showing it closed for its conveying function while being lowered into the well.
A is a body member consisting of a collar provided with an internal thread at each end. One end of the collar is intended to be screwed upon the end of one ormore joints of pipe or casing A which forms a container member of suflicient capacity to hold the quantity of cement or other material which it is desired to place in the well. The other end of the collar is connected to the cylinder or barrel member B of the device.
This barrel is provided with external threads at its upper end, which are screwed into the collar A. The lower end of the barrel is closed by a bottom B of larger external diameter than that of the body of the barrel so that it projects peripherally to form a stop for the valve member hereinafter mention d, A dis h rge wile he e Specification of Letters Patent. 7 fPatent ed Aug. 13, 1918.
Application filed May 20, 1918. Seria1No.'2 35,683.
shown as two h'oles C arepr'ovided near the bottom of the barrel.
' D is a sleeve valve member sliding upon the barrel B and provided with a stem member, here shown in the form of reins E which extend below the bailer throughslots in the rim of the bottom B of the barrel, and terminate in aperforated cross foot E.
- spring latch F is inserted in the barrel B 1n such a way that when the sleeve valve ment or other material to be placed in the well, and lowered to the bottom. When the bailer reaches the bottom of the well the foot E of the reins E rests upon the bottom and arrests the descent of the sleeve valve D so that the barrel B slides down through said I sleeve valve until the spring latch F is released, thus holding the sleeve valve clear of the holes in the bottom of the bailer, as shown in Fig. 1. VVhen the bailer is raised its contents are discharged through the holes C and remain at the bottom of the well.
lVe claim 1. A cement dump-bailer for the described 7 purpose comprising a body-member; a container-member fitted to one end of the body member; a barrel member fitted to the other end of the body-member, said barrel-member having a discharge outlet; a valve-meal ber adapted to control said outlet; a valvestem connected with the valve-member and disposed by contact with the well bottom to move said valve member to open the discharge outlet; and a latch acting on the valve-member to hold it open.
I 2. A cement dump-bailer for the described purpose comprising a body-member; a container-member fitted to one end of the bodymember; a barrel-member fitted to the other end of the body-member, said barrel member having a discharge outlet, a sleeve-valve fitted to and slidable upon the barrel-member to cover and uncover the discharge outlet thereof; a stem member connected with he slew-Yale a d eras-l ne y nd th 10 p barrel member, adapting it by contact With the "well" bottom to'lift the sleeve-valve, to uncover the barrel outlet; and a latch acting on the sleeve-valve to holdit open. 3. A cement dump-bailer for the described purpose comprising a bod'yanenib'e r; a container-member fitted to one end of the body-member; a barrel-member fitted to the other end of said body-member, said barrel member having a closed bottom projecting peripherally, and having also a discharge outlet in its Wall above said closed bottom; a sleeve-valve fitted to and slidable upon the barrel-member between its bottom and the body-member, to cover and uncoverthe discharge outlet; a stem-member connected was offshig a may he l ma for sleeve-valve to uncover theb'arrel outlet;
with the SlGQYQ-VtLlVG and extending beyond thebot'toin of the barrel-member adapting it, by contact With the Wellbottom, to lift the 23 and a spring latch carried by the barrelmemberaiid acting on the sleeve-valve to hold it open.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of :25 tWo subscribing Witnesses.
