Specification of Letters l at ent Patent ed Aug. 13,

time, und having means combined whereby being a current f ai1r may be produced,-the air directed toward the occupants of the swing.
A furthiar object is to prgvide a devi ce of the kind which may be readily transported from place to place, the same being used with entire safety, the fan elements being automatically operated by the involuntary action cf the parties in operating the swing.
These an d other like hy the novel constructibn and combination 0f parts hereafter described and shown in the ac cqmpanying drawings, fonning a ma terial part of this specification, and in whichz Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a swing made in accordance with the invention.
' Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Fig-. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 Cf Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a partial sectional view, arts being broken away showing the transrnitting mechanism.
The device consists ofan essentially rectangulzu" frame or base c0mprised of side and end elements -fr0m which rise standards 11 at the corners, the same being further secured by braces 12, the Standards being attachedat their upper ends to an awning frame 14 provided with a cover 15 by means of Which the parties using the swing rriay be sheltered from the rain and sun.
Suspehded from the frame 14 by pivoted rods 17 is a swingingframe 18 carrying a platform 20 provided with fixed foot rests 21 and supporting central standards 22 having braees 23 by which it is held perpendic alarto the frame 18.
obj ects are attained flso Jsecured 'qn tl1e ffaine 18 are filile lower elements 25 of seats 26 provided with backs 27 and 28 =thereby f0rming a comfortable se a't for the occupants 0f the sw ing.
One of t he backs 28 has an e'Xtendin arm 29cqntgiinihfg a slot 30 at its lower en through-which passes a pin 31 secured in Iwhen the occup'ant of. the seat leans back, the swing is casted to oscillate. At theto p of t he standards 22 is a trans- 'verse shaft 35 up on which is mounted arms 36 carr'yi1ig fan blades 37, a band 01 sprocket wheel 38 being seeuiedalorigside of the fan upon the shaft and ada1ited t'o be o'perated by a band 0r chiin'39 leading froni the driving Wheel 40, mounted onthia shaft 42 journaled in the sides 0f the'frame 18. Also upon this shaft is loosely secured a, ratchet wheel 44 engagedWith Which am pa'wls 45 pivoted on the side of the wheel 40 and held operativ6ly'in connection with the teeth of the ratchet by the springs 46.
Secured to the side ofthe ratchet wheel 44 is a pinion 48 engaging With a rack 49 formed near the outer end 0f a bar0, pivotally engaged at its opposite e'nd With one of the suspending I'Ods 17.
Thus when the pccupant leans back against the element 28, the swing platfoxm 18, together with the elements mounted thereon, are caused to o'scillate whereby the bar 50 is given a longitudinal motion, causing the rack 49 to Communicate rotary m0- tion to the pinion 48 and ratchet' 44, and by reaSon of the pawls, imparting a rotary motionto the driving wheel 40.
Obviously, when the swing oscillates in iihe opposite direction, the pawls will ride over the ratchet teeth 44 imparting no m0- tionooit.
From th'e foregoing, it will be seen that means are provided whereby the fan is given intermittent rotary motion darin movement .of the swing, the fan operat-mg at a speed proportional to the leng'th-0f the os-- cillation of -the frame 18 and the speed at which it is oscillfced.
Obviously, the opposite seat may be similarly arrang'ed with the rack bar and Power transmitting device so that at each oscil lat ion an impulse may be given tothe fan, causing it to rotate. in*one direction uninterruptedly;
Haying thus described nqy vimnmti on',
' pne ofthe Isides of the frame 18. Thus what I claim as T1ew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
'1. In a device as described, in combina tion, a base member, standards secured thereupon, an awning frame Se0ured t0 the uppe r ends of said standards, pivotal rods secured to said awning frame, a swinging frzime suspended upon said rods and carrying a platform, central standards secured in transverse spaced apart relation upon said platform, a shaft journaled at the upper ends 0f said central standards, a fan secured for rotatibn upon said last-named sha ft, means f01 rotating said shaft, a longitudinally-rriovable member adapted to actuate said r neans a chair secured upon on'e ena of said platform, a chair baqk pivotally connected between its. ends to one pair 0f said pivotal rods, said-pivoted back engaging with said swinging frame so as t0 turn upon its pivot, and 'a connection between sa1d last-named rods an'd sa1d member whereby sa1d memberobeys the movement 0f said rods.
2. In a de v 1ce as descnbed, m comb1nah0n, a base.member Vert1cal standards secmed thereponan awning frame secured uponsaid sta 1adar ds, pairs of rods pivotally mounted upon said awning frame, a swing- 1ng frame suspended upon sa1d rods, Sand frame 1nclud1ng a platform, a cha1r secured at 0ne end of said platform, a back pivot ally mounted upon one pair of said rods and having lower extending arms fonned with elongated s1ots berein, a pair of cettral standards secured upon said platform, a shaft journaled upon the upper ends 0f said standards, a series of fan blades fixed upon said shaft, a second shaft arranged below said platform. upon said swing1ng frame, a chain drive from the second shaft t0 t he first shaft, a pinion also fixed upon the se c0nd shaft, a rack bar meshing with Said pinion and guided against theunderside 0f said plz1tform, an eye formed at one end of said rack bar in which one 0f du: pivotal rods project, a pin secured to the side of said swinging frame and projecting into the slot in the extending arm of said chair back, said chair back being inclined with respect t0 the vertical when s;aid pivota1 rods are arranged Parallel und vertically.
In test'imony whereof I have aflixed my signature this 22nd day of December, 1916.
