more particularly to gas engine heads, with supply and exhaust valve mechanisms therein. Among the salient ob ects of my invention are,to provide in a gas engine head a valve chamber with rotary exhaust valve therein with water chamber or jacket around said valve chamber, and with means for causing the Water from the water chamber to be discharged across the open end of the exhaust valve member, whereby to Wash the same and to cleanse the exhaust chamber after each explosion; to provide in such a head a separate rotary valve member, wlth separate inlet, for controlling the supply of gas mixture to the cylinder of the engine; and, in general, to provide a simplified construction of gas engine head, complete in itself, including supply and exhaust valves with connecting operating mechanism therefor, and which can be bodily removed from and replaced upon a cylinder.
In order that othersmay thoroughly understand my invention, I have illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings one practicalembodiment thereof which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line engine head embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough, taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken on line 33 of Fig. 1, at right angles to the view shown in Fig. 2; and a Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View of the head.
Referring now to thedrawings more in detail, A designates my gas engine head adapted to be mounted upon a cylinder .B, shown in fragmentary view in Fig. 3. Said head is provided in its underside with a chamber 1, adapted to register with the chamber of the cylinder, designated 2, when placed thereover, with a water jacket 3 about the same, and With an exhaust opening 4 and a supply opening 5 therethrough, leading, respectively, to two different valve chambers in the head. in which are mounted, respectively, rotary exhaust valve member 6, and

The exhaust rotary valve member 6 is of cylindrical form, open at one end to discharge into said exhaust chamber 9, and provided at its opposite end with a driving axle, as 10, upon which is mounted abevel gear 11. The suppl rotary valve member 7 is smaller and and is also provided at one end with a driving axle, as 12, adapted to receive a driving gear 13, said axles and said gears being set through the side of a chambered member 14, adapted to be secured to the main head A, as by means of bolts 15.
Rotata'bly mounted through said chambered member 14 is a drive shaft 16, upon which is secured two beveled gears 17 and 18, adapt ed to drive the gears 11 and 13 upon the ends of the valve membersfi and 7. Also mounted'upon said shaft 16 is a beveled gear 19, adapted to mesh with and be driven from a gear 20, shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3,
upon a drive shaft 21, well known ways.-
The gas supply rotary valve member 7 is in its side with adapted. to be moved into and out of register with the inlet port or opening 5 leading into the cylinder chamber 2, and at its open end it registers with a supply inlet opening 7 through the head, to which can be connected any source of gas supply.
The exhaust rotary valve member 6 is driven in any of the 6, adapted to be moved into and out of register with the exhaust opening 4, from the chamber 2. Said rotar valve members are both so connected and so timed that the exhaust opening 4 of the exhaust valve member 6, is closed during the time the supply opening 7", in the valve member 7, is in register with the inlet 5, for supplying a fresh charge of gas mixture to the cylinder chamcompression and explosion of the same, after which said exhaust port 6 moves into register with the exhaust opening 4, whereby the gases of combustion escape through the exhaust valve member 6.
An important feature of the invention is found in providing means for discharging water through the exhaust chamber adjacent the exhaust valve member for cleansing an outlet port 7",
and cooling purposes. This I do by providing a short tubular member 22 between the water chamber or jacket 8, and the exhaust chamber 9, at the end of the exhaust valve member 6, whereb the water circulating through the water acket 8 is caused to discharge through sai member 22 across the 0 en end of the exhaust valve member 6, there y washing the end of said valve member and cleansing the exhaust chamber 9 after each explosion, and as said water is cooler than the valve member, it serves to cool the valve member and the exhaust chamber. Access to said tubular member 22 is had through an o ening 23 in the head A, which is provide with a removable plu 24:.
' h ounted upon the outer endof the shaft 16, is an eccentric driving mechanism C, adapted to actuate a sparking mechanism D of any desired type, but as it forms no part of my invention, I will not describe it more in detail.
Thus I have provided a very simple and practical engine head, complete in itself and which can be most easily detached and removed bodily from the cylinder, together with its valves and operatin mechanisms. I have also provided a most e ective way of cleansing and cooling the exhaust valve member and the exhaust chamber by providing means for passing water through said exhaust chamber adjacent said exhaust valve member. l I do not limit the invention to the specific embodiment here shown for illustrative purposes, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.

1. In a gas engine, an engine head having formedtherein an exhaust chamber, a supply chamber and a Water chamber or jacket, an exhaust valve member in said exhaust chamber having an open end discharge, a supply valve member in said supply chamber, means for operating said valve members,
and means for discharging water from said water chamber or jacket across the open end of said exhaust valve member into said exhaust chamber, substantially as described.
aaraeve In a gas engine, in combination with a cylinder, a self-contained head adapted to be detachably secured-to said cylinder and having formed therein an exhaust valve chamber, a supply valve chamber and water chamber, a cylindrical exhaust valve mem-' her in said exhaust valve-chamber open at one end and driven at its other end,-a cylindrical supply valve member in said supply valve chamber adapted at one end to be connected with a gas supply and to be driven at its opposite end, riving connections between said valve members with means for driving them together, and means for discharging water from said water chamber across the open end of said exhaust valve member and through said exhaust chamber for the pur ose of cleansing and cooling the same, su stantially as described.
4. In a gas engine, in combination, a body having an exhaust chamber therein and a water jacket around the same, a hollow exhaust valve member movably mounted in said exhaust chamber and having one end open, means for moving the same to control the exhaust through said exhaust chamber, and a tubular connecting member connecting with the water jacket in said body and discharging across the open end of said hollow member for cleansing said exhaust chamber, substantially as described.
