Be it known that I, JAMES D. 'ELsoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Registering Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.

In the arrangement illustrated, means are y provided for indicating onthe strip 17 the number of passengers getting on or off the car at either end of the latter, these devices in the illustrated embodiment of my invention being manually controlled and comprising` the following mechanism:
Depending from brackets 49 secured to the casing and extending transversely thereof are a plurality of electro- magnets 50, 51, 52 and 53, the armatures of which, represented at 54, are of bell-crank form, being fulcrumed, as indicated at 55, to spaced lugs 56 depending from the brackets 49. The lower arms 57 ofthe bell-cranks 54 coperate'with the cores 58 of the magnets 5Q-to 53 inclusive, and the upper arms 59 of these ybell-crank levers are provided with fingers 60 which, respectively, oppose openings 61, 62, 63 and 64 in the plate 35. In practice, the fingers would be provided with any `means for making a mark, as for example a pencil point, and, in operation, the respective,electro-magnets 50 to 53. inclusive would be energized, as hereinafter described, Vto cause'the fingers 60 to be momentarily moved into contact with the sheet 17 for making a mark thereon,` the bellcrank levers 54 being yieldingly held in the position illustratedfof the one shown in Fig. l with the strip 17 by means of springs 65 -connected at opposite ends with the arms 59 of the respective levers 54 and with pins 66 Arising from the plates 49. Inv the arrangement illustrated, two ofthe circuit devices 67 to 70 inclusive would be vlocated on the frontplatform accessible to the motorman, and the other two on the rear platform accessible tothe conductor. One of each of these pairs of switch-devices would be the medium through which the cooperating magnets of the series 50 to 53 thereof wouldbe operated for actuating the respective fingers 60 to make such the paper `17 as willindicate thereon the giumber of passengers'boarding thecar at any. given period of time, and the other of the switch-devices 67 to 70 inclusive would be the medium through which tlie other two of the .magnets 50 'and 53inclusive would beoperated for causing the fingers 60 cooperating therewith to make marks on the sheet 17 indicating the number of passengers alighting from the car.
In the ypreferred illustrated embodiment of my invention, means are provided for indicating on the sheet 17 'the number of times the car stops and the length of the stops during any given period of time, a description of these means being as follows: Located lin the casing and supported therein on a bracket 71 secured to the'casing-Wall is an electro-magnet 72, the armature of which, represented at 73, is of bell-crank form and fulcrumed, as indicated vwhile such current is turned on,

The arm 76 of the bell-crank 73 forms the armature-proper of the magnet 72 and coperates with the end of the magnetizable core 77. excepting when the car 1s at a standstill, Aso that the marking disk 85 will be in contact with the sheet 17 during theentire time the car is in motion,.,but will be withdrawn from Vcontact therewith when the car is at rest,
and to effect this operation ofthe marking device I provide circuit connections and electrical devices, hereinafter more fully described, whereby the' magnet is energized by the current supplied to the motor of the car, and upon shutting' olivn the current to the motor the magnet 72 is energized by the regenerative current produced by the rotation of the Inotor-armature under the momentum of the car when the current to the motor is Shut olf.
Desirable circuit connections for the various indicating devices hereinbefore de-y scribed when the registering device is usedl in connection with a trolley-car, are'represented in Fig. 6, a description of which is as' follows: A trolley wire is represented at 88, this wire, as is common in practice', leading from the power station where vit is oonlwhich, in practice,
connects with a wire 118 nected with one side of a dynamo (not shown), the` other side thereof being grounded. A trolley is diagrammatically represented at 89, a .wire 90 connecting the trolley with the movable arm 91 of a 'switch would be the usual cur` rent-controller `provided on trolley cars. The stationary contact of the switch or controller, represented at 92, is connected by a wire 93 with one of the brushes 94 of the car-propelling motor 9,5, the other brush 96 thereof being, grounded as represented at' 97, thedescrlbed circuitv connections between the' trolley, motor vand controller corresponding to the usual circuit connections in trolley cars. The contact-arm 47 is connected with, the wire 129, its coperating` arm 48 being connected with a wire 133' which connects with-one of the`terminalsof the magnet 43, the other terminal of this magnet being connected with a wire 134 grounded as indicated at 135.

Thus energizing this magnet causes the arm 102 to be moved into engagement with the contact-point 103, thereby establishing a circuit through the wires 128 and 116, magnet 72, wires v115 and 117, armature 102 to ground at 105, and .from ground at `132 nd battery 130. So long as current 'is flowing from the ywire 88 through the motor 95, the armature 102 will be held in engagement with the contact 103, with the result of causing the disk 86 carried by the armature 76 to vbe held against the paper 17. As soon as the controllerswitch 91 is operated to open the circuit in which the motor 95 is interposed, the armature 102 assumes the position illustrated in Fig. 6 under the action of the spring 106, wherein it bears against the contact-point 104. ,The rotation of the armature of the motor 95,y after current thereto is shut ofi', due to the momentum of the car in coasting, causes a regenerative current to be produced which travels from the brush 96 through the armature of the motor to the brush 94, thence throu wire 108 to coil 107, and from the coil 157 through the wire 109 vto contact-point 104, and armature l at 105, thereby completing the circuit through the grounded brush at 97. Energizing the magnet 107 causes the armaturey 110 to engage l 112, thereby closing the circuit through the passing from the ground 130 and from the latter through the wire 131 to ground `at 132. The effect of energizing the magnet 72 by the closing of the circuit through the inedium of the armature 110' is the same las that described of the closing of the circuit with the contact-point through the armature 102. It will be manifest that one observing the sheet 17' after it has passed through the registering mechanism,lmay readily determine the number of times that the car was stopped during any period of time, the length of time that the car wasfin motion and consequently the'length of time it was standing still, and the number of passengers boarding and alighting t'rom fthe car during any fore the operating department of an electric railroad, certain of the valuable factors are -presented which are necessary in determining the speed at which the car should be ruin# during different periods of the day for operating the cars with the maximum economy, and determining the number of cars required to be run during different periods ofthe day to accommodate the patrons of the road to the greatest possible practical extent.
