Description

UNITED ,STATES PATENT OFFICE.v
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPE DAMPERS.
'Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,516, dated June 4, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Stove Pipe Damper, invented by CHARLES REED, of Beaver Dam, in the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin.
My invention consists of a cast-metal plate or disk the greater portion of which has parallel slots and bars similar to a fire-grate, with a grate arranged above it, to close the slots or open them by its bars swinging in the slots of the disk, both being supported on thumbscrews passing through the pipe, one of which is connected so as to turn the grate while serving to support the disk, which is designed to tit snugly in the pipe, to be held by friction from turning while the grate turns, and by which it is partly supported.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of a section of pipe with my improved damper applied to it, and Fig. 2 is a top view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the cast-metal disk, with parallel slots B and ribs C, as shown, and ears D adapted to pivot it on an axis at right angles to the said bars and slightly above its upper surface. E represents the parallel bars of the upper grate, which are connected only at the center, so that, being arranged to coincide with the slots B of the disk and pivoted in the same axis that said disk is, they may be turned down in said slots to open the passage, and, being brought to a plane parallel with that of the disk, will close the passage or very nearly so, care being taken to leave a sufficient space to not entirely shut oi the draught, so that the stove will not smoke when closed. The thumb-screw F screws into ear D, but has a smooth portion, G, beyond, entering a socket in the end of the trunnion H for a pivot for said trunnion to turn on; but the screw I has a smooth portion, K, Where it passes through its ear, D, for a journal to turn in said ear, and beyond this is a screw-threaded portion, L, screwing into the trunnion M, hard against the bottom of the hole to serve as the handle for turning the grate.
The disk is intended to'bear against the inner side of the pipe with suflicient pressure to hold it from turning with the grate, but it is to be so that it can be turned when desired.
lHaving'thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a selicleaning damper, composed of disk A, with parallel slots B, ribs C, and ears D D, the upper grate E havingl sockets H H and the thumb-screw journals F G and I K, as described, whereby the two parts can be relatively adjusted, while it remains a self-cleaning damper at all points of adjustment.
CHARLES REED.
