HERMAN B. FRENSDORF, or GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN.
GUN-SIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 27, 1917. Serial No. 204,152
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN R. FRENs- DORF, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsim have invented new and useful Improvements in Gun-Sights, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The invention relates to front sights for guns more particularly adapted for use on rifles and machine guns.
The object of the invention is to provide a front sight which, when used in connection with a suitable rear sight, will enable the shooter to sight along the exact center of the rear sight. The sight is not designed to provide for moving the gun barrel to different elevations to provide for different ranges but is used to enable the shooter to get a correct sight upon the object for point blank -range by establishing a true line of sight from the shooters eye through the center of both the front and rear sights to the object.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view of a gun barrel provided with a front sight embodying the in vention, parts being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sight in position upon the front end of the barrel,
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4is a section taken on the line 14of Fig. 1, showing the rear sight centered by the front sight for correct shooting.
The front sight consists of a base mem bar 5 of usual construction and two leaves 6 and 7 secured to the base and having their abutting sides forming a center line 8. To more clearly mark ofl or distinguish this center line the rear'edges 9 of the leaves are beveled inwardly forming a vertically disposed notch in which the center line 8 forms the apex of the notch. To further define the center the top of the leaf 7 is disposed below that of the leaf 6 toform a right angled notch or recess 10, the inner edge l0, of the leaf 6 forming part of this notch, being in line with the center line 8. To further assist in sighting, the rear end of the leaf 6 is beveled to form an angled rear edge 11 which meets the center line 8 at the point where the top of the leaf 7 strikes it. The leaves 6 and 7 thus described might be made in one piece if desired but by making them in two pieces it is easier to obtain greater accuracy in workmanship.
This front sight may be used in connection with any suitable rear sight, the commonest type of which is the V-notch sight 12. In the use of an ordinary bead front sight or plain front sight with a notched rear sight the shooter has to guess on the centering of the front sight in the notch of the rear sight with the result that it often happens he shoots to one side or the other of the object he is aiming at. With the present sight by the use of a clearly defined vertical center line 8 and the projection of one portion of the sight above the other at the center line, I am able to get a quick accurate centering of the front and rear sights upon the object aimed at.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A front sight having a vertical center line of sight provided with an angled recess in its top, one side of the recess lying in a vertical plane coincident with the center line of sight and one side of the sight being bev eled adjacent its rear edge to form an angled rear edge which meets the point of intersection of the sides of the recess.
2. A front sight provided with a vertical center line clearly defined by inwardly beveled portions extending from the outer rear side edges of the sight to said center line, and having a vertical portion of the sight elevated above the other, the inner side of this vertical portion being in line with the vertical center line.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
-HERMAN R. FRENSDORF.
