Description

WALSH, E' WXLKNSBURG, PENNSYLVANL.
ELECTRIC ZE'SE.
:To ollrwwm t may concern:
Be it known that L'VVALrnn lV. "WALSH, residing at l/Vilkinsburg, in the county of Alleghenyv and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen or' the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Fuses, ot which im provementsthe following isa specification.
My invention relates to eut-outs or fuses used for interrupting electric circuits when the currents carriedltheriiby become abn'rf mal or dangerous, and has to do particularly with casings for what areknown as inclosedy fuses.`
The object of my invention is to provide a fuse casingv which, although strong und durable, maybe easily a'nd quickly opened to renew the fusible element. A further object is to provide a fusefcasing which will not be broken by the explosive force of a blowing fuse; which will prevent lfiamesfrom escaping; and which `will muiile the` report of the explosion of the fusible element;
'In the accompanying sheetof drawings,
\ forming' part 'of my specification, l have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention. Figure l is a longitudinal central sectional view of the fuse casing, the plane of view being indicated by the line IMI, Fig. 2; Fig. 2 a transverse sectional view taken on the line lla-H, Fig. l; Fig. 3.
, a detail sectional view taken on the line 'l lle-IH, Fig. l; and Fig. 4 shows a modification of construction.
The fuse casing which I provide has a substantially cylindrical outer side wall formed of two incomplete cylinders having overlapping edges. The ends of these cylinder parts are suitably closed by means oi' end walls through which there extend electrical conductors provided within the casing with suitable means for attaching a fusible element to them. That the casing may be readily opened to replace a fusible ele ment, the two side wall parte thereof are constructed and arranged to telescope late-P ally. "While the interior oit' the casing),1 may be of any desired construction., l preferably' provide a plurality oincomplete cylinders or tubes within the outer wall, lsuch tubesv havin overla') in edves and arran ed 1 D. alternately onopposite sides ot the longitudinal axis o the casing. ',ih-ese. tubes are so arranged, with respect to the space intervals between them, te :feria @entrai Specification of Letters Patent.

plosion chamber for the fusible element and a plurality of expansion chambers communieating with each other and with such explosion chamber. Furthermore, the tubes on each side of the longitudinal axis of thel casing are so-fnterconnected that they will,
together with the outer casing parts, be
capable of Ilateral telescopic movemeifitV for the purpose of gaining access to the tenter of the entire structure through the-side` thereof. j In the embodiment of my invention illus'- trated herein, the Aouter casing, consists of end walls 1 and 2,'and cylindrically shaped side w'all parts 3 and 4 avin overlappin edges as already explained.4 oth end an side w'allsare made 'of'insulating material' such as wood fiber.' To provide for the telescopic movement of the sidewall parts, the part 4 is xedly attached at its opposite ends to the end walls l and 2, and the part 3 vis slidably mounted in grooves 5 and 6 formed in the end walls adjacent to the part 4. For moving the part 3 it is, as seen in Fig. 2, provided with a fingeror lug 7.
ri'xtending' through the center of each end wall there is an electrical conductor 8,
adapted to-be connected to-an electric circuit i .exteriorlyof the casing, and provided within the casing' with a conducting yoke 9.' To
hold a fusible element 10 inv electrical contact with one side of, the yoke, there" is provided a spring-pressed plunger 111. extending.
through the other side of the yoke. Thus,to
removetheparts of a blown fusible element, it is only necessary to pull each part from its engagement by a yoke, while Ya new element may be placed in position by simply l raising the plungers ll. Y
For forming the interior explosion and exJ pension chamber so that flames may not es# cape and that the reporty of the blowing of a fusible element may be muilied, four incomplete or segmental cylindrical tubes 12, 13,
14 and l5 are provided. All-fof these tubes are made of insulating'materiaL and may, if desired, be corrugated as shown in'Fig. 4 to give them added .strength to resist the explosive ,force of ra blowing fuse. tubes l2 and 13 are arrangedon one side of the Aaxis of the' casing. and arev slidably mounted in grooves 1, and 17 in theend wallV l and limd 19in the end wall 2, while the 'tubes i4 andl are arranged pn the other the eine nl alternation with the tubes vet llheA :iet
