ALBERT C. HUDGENS, OF HONEA PATH, SOUTH CAROLINA.
LEVER-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6,1918.
Application filed March 30, 1918., SeriaLNo. 225,752.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. HUDGENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Honea Path, in the county of Anderson and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lever-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
In brackets, plates, or other castings provided with elongated slots and transverse notches communicating with said slots, in which levers play and in which the said levers, when held in one position are arranged in a notch or notches while under strain, the frictional engagement of the lever with the end wall of the notch wears the same, and as a consequence the lever cannot be retained in proper position to perform the function required thereof. This is essentially true with respect'to the skipper lever and lug pieces or lug plates on drapers looms, and when such wear between the skipper lever and the notch in the lug piece occurs, it is necessary to remove and replace the lug piece. This, of course, results in the stoppage of the loom, and loss of time in removing and replacing the lug plate, and the expense of a new lug plate.
It is the object of this invention to provide a wear lug, of steel or other hardened material, for the end wall of the lever receiving notch in the lug piece of a loom, or in other holding plates for levers, whereby the wear between the lever and the lug or plate may be readily taken up without necessitating the removal of parts or the stoppage of machinery.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a loom illustrating the lug plate thereof provided with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 2. v
Fig. 4 is a sectional view approximately on the line H of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the improvement.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a slight modification.
As the improvement is primarily designed for employment on the holding plate or lug piece of the skipper levers of looms, the same has been so illustrated by the drawing, but, it is to be understood that the improvement need not be thus restricted, as the same may be successively employed upon any notched plate through which a lever is guided and held.
The holding plate or lug piece of looms arein the nature of castings, and consequently are not of hardened wear resisting metal. The lug plate illustrated in the drawing is of usual construction, having the upper portion or bracket thereof provided with an elongated slot 10. for the skipper lever 11. One of the sides of the slot, at one of the ends thereof is formed with. a notch 12 within which the lever 11 is arranged, when the said lever is in one position, as for instance when the brake for the machine is released. The inner shoulder provided by the notch, indicated by the numeral13 is at all times subject to contact with one of the edges of the lever. Ordinarily the lever is constructed of. steel and consequently is harder and will resist wear greater than will the shoulder 13 or the notch. The constant strain to which the lever 11 is subjected soon causes Wear on the shoulder 13, and as a consequence the lever cannot be successively held in the notch. To overcome this objection I provide the lug piece 1 1 with a wear member 15. But, however, the wear member 15 is arrangedv in the notch 12, and I file or otherwise cut away the shoulder 13 for the reception thereof. The wear piece is in the nature of a lug and formed on one end of a body 16, the said body, adjacent the outer end thereof having an opening 17 which is preferably elongated, and through this opening is passed a shank of a bolt 18 the said bolt passing through the usual opening in the depending portion or car 19 on one of the sides of the lug piece 14 and the said bolt being engaged by a nut 20.
The wear lug 15 is of some suitable hardened material, such as harveyized steel, but the body member 16 thereof may be of softer and coarser material. The loose connection between the body and the ear of the lug piece permits of a certain longitudinal adjustment of the lug piece in the notch 12 so that the same may be properly positioned to fully contact with the edge of the skipper lever.
It is believed, from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings that the simplicity and advantages of construction will be fully apparent.
In Fig. 6 the lug piece 30 is substantially similar to that previously described, the
same, however, being provided With a substantially rectangular opening 31 through Which the bolt passes for securing the same to the lug plate. Also preferably the member 30 is provided with a removable Wear lug 32, or the said Wear lug may be Welded or otherwise secured to the comparatively soft member 30, it being understood, of course, that the lug is of hardened material, such as harveyized material.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a plate or lug having an elongated slot providing a guide for a lever, and a notch in one of the Walls of the slot to receive'the lever, When the said lever is to beheld in open position, of a Wear plate in the said notch, contacting With one of the edges of the lever.
2. In combination with a plate or lug having an elongated slot providing a guide for a lever, and a notch in one of the Walls of the slot to receive the lever, When the said lever is to be held in open position, of a 1011 gitudinally adjustable wear plate in the ilOtCll engaging with one of the edges of the ever.
3. In combination with a plate or lug having an elongated slot providing a guide for a lever, and a notch in one of the Walls of the slot to receive the lever, When the said .lever is to be held in open position, of a lug comprising a Wear plate arranged in the notch designed to be contacted by one of the edges of the lever, a body on said lug, and a pivotal connection between said body and said plate or lug piece.
4L. In combination With a plate or lug having an elongated slot providing a guide for a lever, and'a notch in one of the Walls of the slot to receive the lever, When the said lever is to be held in open position, of a wear plate in the said notch, contacting with one of the edges of the lever, of a Wear lug of hardened material in the notch designed to be contacted with one of the edges of the lever, an angle body formed on the Wear plate having an elongated opening therein, a bolt member passing through the opening and through an opening in the holding plate or lug piece, and a binding element on the bolt.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
ALBERT O. HUDGENS.
