SHAPER AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1918.
To all wfiam-it-may concern:
Be'it: knownthat I, PETERPLAN HNGA, of Rochester, im the county of Monroe and State at New York, haveinvyentedi contain mew and useful! Improvements in She/pens and the like; and! 1 do: hereby declare the followingeto be a fiull; clear, and enact description of the same rcfienence: being; bad to the accompanying drawings; fiormin a punt GEE thisispecifinauion, and to the n orence' chair-acetone marked thereon.
My: inlvemion relates to impnovements in shapers and theulike' and has? for its object to provide more particularly means for readily adjusting thestnokeofi shape! rams on-tool slides of othermetal cutting. machines; so that; thee-path of travel at therein or slidmmay beshifted eithen' forwandly or hackwiardly asdesired according; to the nature of the work to be performed. A feather obj act of the invention: is to provide meansifor quickly and. positively locking the ram adjusting mechanism at whatever points it isdesirod to hold the same. To these and other ends. the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of pants, all, as will: he heneinafiter more 11115 descnibed, the'novel features being pointed out in theclhims at the end of the specification.

The tool 14: iscarried on an adjustable head 15 at the forward end of the rain. Mounted Within the ram isa slide block 16 to which: is pivotally connected at 17- the rocker arm 18, the lower end of which slides in the socket formed in the shoe 19 whichhas a rocking motion on. a shaft passing through the column. llhc top of the rocker arm 18 is saconstruoted that the long shaft 12 forming. the won; piece may be passed therethrough without intenfering with the operati-onflof the arm;
The driving mechanism for the ram comprises the pinion 20 meshing with the gear 21 carrying the crank 22 and slide block 23 for! rocking the arm or slotted lever 18 whereby movement of the slide 16 is eiiected to reciprocate the ram 13.
The adjusting mechanism for the ram comprises thetransverse threaded block 2+1 withwhich is connected the feed screw 25, the-front of the screw having a journal 26 rotatable in a bearing 27 formed upon the backof the slide block16 as shown in Fig. 1. The: slide block has a recess 28 formed at its center to receive the intermoshing beveled gears 29 and 30, the former being rigidly connectedwith an extension 31 upon the journal 26 and the latter rigidly connected with a vertical shaft; 32, the lower end of w lziichv is preferably seated in a cavity formedin the bottom wall of theslide block while theupper end extends through the slide block and ram to receive the operating handfle 33, which is keyed: or otherwise rigidly connected with said shaft.
Means for clamping the slide block upon the ramcomprises the slecveor'quill 34 and the lever 354501? rotating the same, @thesleeve extending through thetop wall of the slide ed engagement. therewith, while t-h e slideblock is provided-withguides 36-slidahly mounted upon the guideways 37 termedupon the ram as shown in Fig. 3, it being understood j that movement of the lever 35! in one? direction will tighten the slide 1 block upon the ram and movement of said lever in an opposite direction will loosen the same. The hand wheel 33 is rotatably mounted upon the top of the sleeve 34 so that rotation of said wheel will not effect rotation of the sleeve. Accidental removal of the hand wheel 33 from the sleeve is prevented by the reduced end of a set screw 38 extending into a groove 39 formed exteriorly of the top of the sleeve as shown in Fig. 3. The sleeve also provided with a collar 40, the upper side of which forms a seat for the hand wheel and the lower side acting to prevent upward movement of the lever 35.
In order to provide a positive locking means for the slide block 16 I have rigidly connected preferably with the beveled gear 30 a gear wheel 40, the teeth of which are adapted to normally receive the locking projection 41 on the bottom of the plunger head s 2 actuated by the spring 43 in the cavity 41 formed in the front wall of the slide block 16. Rigidly connected with the lower extremity of the sleeve 34 is a cam 4-5 positioned opposite the upper portion of the plunger head 42 and movable by operation of the lever to actuate the plunger outwardly until the locking projection a1 disengages the teeth of the gear so that the hand wheel 33 and shaft 32 may be rotated to operate the feed screw 25 for adjusting the ram 13.
The feed screw block 24 is provided at its upper side with a projection 46 extending upwardly between and in sliding engagement with the guides 47 formed upon the ram as shown in Fig. 2. The block 24 is connected with the upper wall of the ram by the machine screws 48, the heads of which fit. loosely in the cavities 49 formed in the ram so that a slight up and down movement of the block is permitted. In order to prevent rocking or shifting of the block by the action of the feed screw I have rigidly connected therewith a pin 50 which is snugly fitted in an aperture formed in the upper wall of the ram. the pin being free to slide up and down in the aperture while being prevented from moving laterally therein. In the operation of the ram adjusting mechanism movement of the ram either forwardly or hackwardly is effected by turning the hand wheel 33 to rotate the ment with the teeth of the gear 40 as shown in Fig. 4. With the parts in this position the slide block 16 is positively looked upon the ram and release of the block is made dependent upon movement of the lever by the operator. Operation of the lever to rotate the cam for the purpose of releasing the plunger 42 to lock the ear 40 will at the same time cause the ri s 36 of the slide block 16 to be drawn into clamping on agement with the guides37 of the ram as s lOWIl in Fig. 3. It will thus be seen that both the clamping and locking mechanisms for the slide block are simultaneously operated by movement of the lever 35 and sleeve 34, the clamping of the slide block upon the ram serving to provide a rigid connection for the rocker arm while the latter is in operation and the gear 40 and plunger projection 41 a positive locking means to prevent acci-- dental displacement of the operating sleeve 34 while the ram is being reciprocated upon the frame or bed of the shaper.
