MW 1 @QW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERLEY M. CUMMINGS, OF MUSGATINE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-MILL HEAfi-BLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,465, dated June 4, 1872.
I, PERLEY M. OUMMINGs, of Muscatine, Muscatine county, State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Head-Blocks for Saw-Mills, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of Invention.
My invention relates to devices for giving theknee of the head-block the necessary movement to and from the line of the saw-cut; and my invention consists of a pulley and cord-connection, by which a movement to and from the line of the saw is imparted to the knee, by a movement of the feed-bar at right angles to it.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the carriage, knee, head-block, and feed-bar of a sawmill, illustrating my connection between the knee and feed-bar. Fig 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
General Description.
A represents a portion of a carriage of an ordinary saw-mill. B is a head-block; and G, the sliding-knee, attached thereto in such a way that it is capable of a sliding motion to and from the line of the cut of the saw in the ordinary way. D is the feed-bar, situated in a line parallel with the line of travel of the carriage A, which is at right angles to the line of motion of the knee 0. The bar is operated in any of the well-known waysheretofore used. A collar, E, is attached to the bar D, to which a wire-rope, F, is secured, the other end of the rope, after its passage over the pulley G, which is journaled in the head-block B, being secured to the end H of the knee. The collar E is ad justable upon the bar D, for the purpose of tightening the cord at any time. Another cord, 1, is secured to the end J of the knee, passed over a pulley, K, journaled in the head-block B, and attached to the adjustable collar L.
lVhen the collars E L are adjusted so as to render the cords F I tight, the least motion of the bar D in a direction at right angles to the line of motion of the knee, will produce a corresponding motion of the knee, the cords or ropes in this operation causing the pulleys G K to rotate.
