WILLIAM a. covnm'nY, or LANCASTERLPENNS'YLVANIA, AssIGNon '10 femur-mow;
casrme comrm, or MOUNT JOY, PENNSYLVANIA, A oonronnrron or PENN-f I SYLVANIA.
Application filed February 21, 1918. Serial No. 218,455.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALGOVEN1 RY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Banks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to toys and more especially to toy banks.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a toy bank comprising several partswith a fastener for securing the parts together and with a coin shield mounted for movement upon thefastener, whereby the fastener and coin shield mechanism com prises a unitary member when the bank is disassembled.- y i Another and further object of the present invention is a bank of the character described wherein the connecting member may comprise a screw-threaded rod carrying a spring-pressed disk which partly jcovers a coin slot provided in the part which carries the connecting member.
Still further and more specifically, the present invention includes a toy bank of the character specified, which comprises, when assembled,-the replica of a loaded shell and wherein the connecting member extends longitudinally of the shell with the axis of the connecting member substantially coincident with the axis of the shell, in such manner that the head of the connecting member-is seated inthe base of the shell and the screwthreaded portion of the connecting member engages with the projectile portion of the shell, so that tension on the connecting member tightly clamps the parts together.
A still further object of the present invention is a bank'of the characterdescribed in the foregoing paragraph and wherein the connectingmember adjacent the -base of the shell is :flattened .to providean abutment against which! rests. a small washer. .to con stitute. the support for alight coiled spring that normally maintains'a coin shield Washer pressed against the base of the she llito partly closethe coin slot therein.
Other and further objects of the present inventionfwill vin part be 7 obvious :and will part beipo'mted-out .hereinaftergin the,
' specifi'eatiein following by referenceto the Specification of Letters Patent.

accompanying drawings, throughout which the same characters are used, to designate the same parts in the several figures thereof.
. Figure 1 is an elevational view 0f the bank as assembled; I a
Fig. 2 is an elevational sectionalview'on' substantially the mid-planeofthe bank.
- Fig. 3 is a detailed view showing the coin shield acting as a ratchet" or catch topre vent retraction of .a coin once inserted through the coin slot.
Fig. is a detailed viewrillustrating' in perspective the relation of the coinsl'ot pro-v tector relative to the coin .slotand' base of ing-the parts-together. In the banks heretofore constructed asreplicas of loaded the art of toys, including 7 shells it has been the custom to provide the body portion andthe projectile as a single plece of materialand to secure theibase orf flange of the shell to the-body portion means of a pluralityof short jscrew bo1ts.
Such construction is disadvantageous .for
a the reason that thebody portion and flange ofthe shell are usually finished in imitation of brass where the projectile'fis usually nickel-plated in imitation of polished steel,
The-double platingof the sing-lemember in:
troduces complications in manufacture which increase expense and i which produce:
an unsatisfactory finished article unless; ex:
treme care isexercised" in the. platingand finishing operations. It is also customary in the artof toy banks to providecoinislot shields so constructed thatlit is, 'diflicult'to' extract the coins from thebank by shaking or turning. the bank to attempt gtocalisethe coinsto drop through the coin slot, Toy I 4 banks are usually low-priced merchand-isfe,,
and the rg Pro t depen s reme lar a h pt b lityi i th i en manufacturing facilities, and elaborate slot protectorsfare prohibitivebeeause f j V p shell. and wherein the projectile," the 1bjody portion of 'the1'shell,,. and the basenl' flan'ge;
efthe' shell, are all separate and {distinct only:
and produces a well- 'nished, durable bank.
The coin slot is provided in the base or flange of the shell adjacent the head of the connecting member so that the coin slot protector may comprise a spring-pressed washer carried by the connecting member, which also carries the spring for maintaining the coin-slot-protector washer in operative position.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the bank comprises a body portion 1 which corresponds to the body portion of the shell and which may comprise a cast cylindrical member which is provided,
on its upper end, with lugs 2 that are adapted to guide and seat the hollow projectile 4 in proper position over the body portion. The flange 5 comprises a flat plate being provided with outstanding lugs 6, preferably four in number, and adapted to engage the interior of the body portion 1 to accurately position the flange over the end of the body portion. The connecting member 7 comprises a screw bolt being threaded as at 8 and provided with a keried head 9 which is adapted to be seated in a suitable opening in the center of the flange plate 5. The flange plate 5 is also provided with'a coin slot 10 which is adjacent the head 9 on the connecting member 7. A relatively large washer 11, a coiled spring 12, and a smaller washer 14 are threaded, in the order mentioned, over the connecting member 7 and, with the coiled spring 12slightly compressed, the connecting member is flattened as at 15 in order toprovide an abutment to prevent longitudinal movement of the washer 14 and consequently to maintain the coiled spring 12 under compression, where- 55 'by' the" larger washer- 11 is compressed against thefla-nge plate 5 jto yieldingly cover aportionlof the coin slot 10, whereby the Washer 11' becomes a coin slot'protector. In operation of inserting a coin into the bank (Fig. itWillbe noted that the ,coin 16 lifts the coin slot protector 11 in such man--. ner that; the coin may be pushed inwardly throughthejcoinslot. "It will be noted, however, that the inclination of the coin protector P11 is such that anattemptto withdia-"vi a coin once inserted past the coin protector wedges the coin between the side walls of the slot and the coin protector so that the withdrawal of the coin' once started is prevented. This feature is desirable since toy banks are usually theproperty of children and preferably should be so constructed that where the act of inserting a coin is begun the mechanism will prevent the retraction of the coin after it is started into the bank.
Realizing that the present invention may be carried out in structures differing slightly from the specific disclosure herewith, I desire that it be understood that this specific disclosure is illustrative and not to be taken in the limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
