FLYING-MACHINE.

A further object of the invention is to provide a flying machine having a hull portion of such size as to form a cabin for the operators and the power mechanism.

door 12 and runners or supports 13.
v A driving shaft 14 extending vertically through a medial portion of the cabin has an ascending propeller 15 mounted on its upper end and a supporting plate 16 firmly mounted on its lower end. The shaft 14is Journaled in bearings 17, 18, 19 and 20 and the bearings 18 and 20 are of the ball type to take the end thrust of the shaft. Bearing 17 is positioned above the cab-in and is connected thereto by angularly extending brace rods 21.
Two internal combustion engines 22 are mounted in the cabin and have a geared connection 23 with the vertically'extending shaft 14 and drive the same. Both engines are connected to both propeller mechanisms in a manner to permit the use of either one or both engines thus providing'a safety fac-- tor in the event of one of the engines accidentally stopping. the engine have frictionclutch connections 25 with the geared connection-23 controlled by operating levers 26. The shaft 14 also has mounted thereon and forming part of one of the gears of'the gear connection 23, a bevel gear 27 which is in mesh with a bevel gear 28 mounted on a horizontally extending counter shaft 29. One'end of the horizontal shaft is journaled in the bearing 19. and the other or forward end is journaled in a bracket bearing 30 mounted in the forward portion of the cabin. A vertical shaft 31 having its lower end resting in a step bearing 32 is also journaled in the bracket bearing 30 and extends upwardly through the roof of the cabin and is provided with a bevel gear 33 on its upper end.,. The vertical shaft 31 also has journaled thereon two beveled reversing gears 34 and 35 which are re 1 is a' longitudinalvertical sec-' on the forward end of the horizontal shaft 29.
The two shafts 24 of The inner faces of the bevelgears 34 and Y 35 are recessed as indicated by the numerals 34' and 35"to receive the expandi rtions 37 of a double clutch 38spline on the said vertical shaft 31. This clutch is actuated by a forked bellfcranked lever 39 which has a linked connection 40 with an operating lever 41 pivoted on, the bracket earing When the clutch member is moved up- 100 in mesh with a bevel gear 36 mounted fast wardly the upper gear 35 will drive the vertical shaft 31 and when moved downwardly the lower gear 34 will drive the said vertical shaft in a reverse direction.
The body portion 41 of the clutch which-is splined to the shaft is formed with heads 42 having recessed portions 43 of V-shape in cross section to receive the expanding portions 37 of the clutch and maintain said expanding portions slidably in position.
The upper end portion of the vertical shaft 31 extends through and has its bearing in the depending sleeve 44 of a revoluble casing 45 mounted on the upper forward end portion of the cabin. The sleeve 44 is journaled in bearings 46 and 47 and at its lower end portion has a worm wheel 48 keyed fast thereon which is in mesh with a worm 49 mounted on a short shaft 50. Said short shaft is journaled in portions of the bearings 30 and 47 and is revolved by a hand wheel 51 for steering the flying machine. I
A horizontally extending shaft 52 journaled in the revoluble casing 45 has a bevel gear 53 mounted on its inner end which is 1n mesh with the bevel gear 33of the vertical shaft 31 and is revolved thereby. A propeller 54 mounted on the forward end portion of the propeller shaft is rotated topropel the machlne forwardly or rearwardly and the propeller may be swung at an angleto the cabin to steer the machine in any direction desired.
In operation the ascending propeller is rotated to raise the machme from the ground and when raised the propeller 54 is rotated to propel the machine forwardly or rearwardly and to steer the machine in any direction desired. When it is desired to descend the speed of rotation of the u per or ascending plropeller is decreased su ciently to permit t e machine to slowly descend by gravity.
From the foregoing description 'it will be seen that the flying machine is of ve simple construction and is well adapted for the purpose described. a
What I claim as my invention is:
- 1. A flying machine, comprising a frame in the form of a cabin, an engine within the cabin, a shaft extending upwardly through the cabin and having a propeller mounted the upwardly extending shaft, another shaft located adjacent one end of the cabin and extending upwardly through the cabin, a
counter shaft having a geared connection" with the first mentioned upwardly extending shaft and a clutch and geared connection with the shaft adjacent the end of the cabin, said last mentioned clutch and geared connection providing for rotating the shaft adjacent the end of the cabin 1n opposite directions, a casing journaled on the last mentioned shaft and having a depending sleeve which surrounds the same, a horizontally extending shaft journaled in the casing and having a geared connection with the ad acent shaft, a propeller mounted on the horizontally extending shaft, and a worm and worm wheel'means mounted within the cabin for turning the sleeve.
2. A flying machine, comprising a frame in the form of a cabin, an engine within the cabin, a shaft extending upwardly through the cabin and having a ropeller mounted on its upper end, angularly extending brace rods connectedto the cabm and the upper portion of the shaft, a bevel gear and clutch driving connection between the engine and 'theupwardly extending shaft, another shaft located adjacent one end'of the cabin and extending upwardly through the cabin,
