Description
C. H. ALLENDER. CLOCHE USEFUL FOR HORTICULTURAL AND AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES.
APPLICATION FILED JAN-24, 917- 1,272,769. Patented July 16, 1918.
WITNESSES 1 Y INVENTOR M m1 M55 H. Mimi/v WM 9 ATTORNEY CHARLES H. ALLENDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLOCHE USEFUL FOR HQRTICULTURAL AND AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES.
Specification of Ietters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1918.
Application filed January 24, 1917. Sria1No. '144,213.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY AL- LENDER, citizen of the United States, and re resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloches Useful for Horticultural and Agricultural Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to cloehes or devices for covering plants to protect them and also to accelerate their growth.
The invention has relation particularly to a known type of cloche which is constructed of wire forming a frame consisting of two separable parts, one of which parts consists of a transverse angular shaped member on which the lower edges of sheet glass or a suitable substitute therefor, forming the sides of the cloche, are seated and held in place. The other part consists of a longitudinal upper member shaped somewhat like the capital letter M, with the two ends bent horizontally at a right angle, thus forming seats for the upper edges of the sheet glass. The angular shaped member is hung from a centrally depending part of the upper member and two upwardly extending parts of the latter member project between the upper edges of the sheet glass, thus forming handles and which upper edges of the sheet glass are held in place by bent ends of the upper member.
The object of the present invention is .to improve and to add to the construction of the cloche above referred to, thereby providing a more rigid construction and adding means for firmly holding sheet glass at the ends, thus providing a cloche closed on all sides and which can therefore be used individually if required and not always in a continuous row, as has been the practice heretofore.
'The accompanying drawing is a perspective view illustrating my improved cloche with the parts thereof assembled and the sheet glass sides and ends in place.
According to the said drawing, 1 is the angular shaped transverse member provided with hooked ends 2, the latter serving to hold the sheet glass 3 forming the sides of the cloche. The upper longitudinal member 4 is provided with the depending part 5 from which part the member 1 is hung. Upwardly projecting parts 6form handles for *tilation.
The ends of the upper longitudinal member 4 are bent at a right angle as at 8 and vertical loops are thus formed. A continu ous longitudinal member 10 is threaded through these loops. This continuous member 10 is bent at right angles as at 11, form ing depending legs 12 having hooked ends 13. The sheet glass 14, forming the ends of the cloche, are engaged by the 1100 (s 13 and under the bends l1, and either by the nicety of the fit of the glass or owing to the spring pressure of the legs 12, the end glass 14 are held in close contact with the edges 15 of the side glass 3.
In erecting the improved cloche, the parts 1 and 4, the latter part carrying the part 10, are put together. The part 10 may however be separate from the part 4 and would then be connected to the part 4 by forcing the member 10 into engagement with the loops 9. When the frame is erected, the lower edges of the sheet glass forming the sides of the cloche are seated in the hooked ends 2 and the upper edges of the glass are gently sprung under the projecting ends 8. The sheet glass forming the ends of the cloche are then pushed into place inside the legs 12 of the continuous member 10, between the hooks 13 and the bends 11.
I claim- 1. In a device of the character described, a frame composed of three separable parts consisting of an angular transverse member having bent over ends; a longitudinal upper member having depending and upwardly projecting portions and loops formed at the ends thereof; and a continuous longitudinal member terminating in depending legs provided with inwardly bent ends.
2. In a cloche as described, a frame for holding sheet glass formin the sides and ends of the cloche, said frame being composed of an angular transverse member provided with hooked ends, a longitudinal upper member having depending and upwardly projecting parts and the ends thereof bent at right angles forming loops, and a continuoiis "longl tudinal member threaded in the said loops of the upper member and having depending legs provided With 5 ends, substantially as and for the described.
Signed at New York eity, in the county of Copies of this patent may nbe obtained f0 CHARLES 1-1. ALLENDER.
