with bag-making machines.
For the purposes of description I will presume that the formers are in a horizon tal position and that the outermost end of the bag, or the like, is being closed, although the formers may be in other position if desired.
The end of the bag is first folded on one side, and then on the opposite side, so that the outstanding portions, or cars, are left which are triangular, or approximately so. Adhesive matter (which I will refer to as gum) is then applied to the folded down portions and afterward the outstanding portions are folded and pressed onto the preceding gummed folds; the end of the bag being completely folded and gummed while in one position.
The partly made bag may be placed on a former by hand, in position to be operated upon, .or it may be brought into position by any suitable mechanism, or the former may be in connection with any type of ba -forming machine wherein a former is, or ormers are, employed.
7 I will describe this invention with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an end elevation, looking in the direction of the arrow A Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a plan of folding and gumming devices in accord ance with my invention. Figs. 4 and 5 are elevations at right angles to each other,
drawn to a larger scale than that to which Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are drawn and showing more clearly the first folder, side folders and the gumming device. Fig. 6 is a section on the line C. D. Fig. 4. Figs. 7, 8,

The first fold is made by means of a folder 1, capable of turning on a center, for instance, on the shaft 2, this folder being shaped to crease, and splay out, the remaining outstanding portions of the bag so that proper following folds are made. The opposite side is then folded down by a second folder 3 capable of turning upon a center preferably by being mounted on the said shaft 2 on which the first folder 1 is mounted and operated by mechanism. (such as cams and levers, or the like, say from the main shaft of the machine as hereinafter described) such that after the second fold has been made the folder 3 will remain stationary on the end of the bag while other folders 4 and 5 are caused to press the outstanding portions onto the folder 3 in order to properly crease the said portions. The folders 4 and 5 are then moved sufficiently away from the bag to enable the folder 3 to continue its forward movement and a gumming device 6 is then caused to apply gum to the folded down portions, the said gumming device being preferably carried by a frame 7, mounted on the arm of the folder 3. When the folder 3, and the gumming device 6, have moved clear of the bag the folders 4 and 5, which creased the upstanding portions as aforesaid, are again brought into operation to fold down, and press, the said portions onto the gummed portions and the end of the bag is then completely folded.
The gumming device 6, is preferably so shaped that it Will apply gum to the first two folds over a surface corresponding in shape, or approximately corresponding in shape, to the outstanding portions, or ears, to be folded down thereon. The said gumming device 6, may be operated by any suitable gearing arranged so that before the folder 3, commencing to move in a direction to operate upon the bag the gumming device 6, will take gum from a roller 8, ro-

Means may be provided to insure that if a bag be not upon a former Xthe gumming devlce 6, when making 1ts forward movement,

Any suitable means may be employed for effecting this but I preferably employ the following means Mounted on the spindle 11, which carries the folder 5, is an arm 12, yielda'blyconnected' to the said folder by a spring 13, having apart 14, projecting through the folder 5, and arranged to be operated so that, if a bag be not in position on a former, the said.arm 12, not being restrainedfrom entering opening 54 by a' bag on the former, will be in such a position as to cause another arm 15, to-be brought into the path of a stop 16, on a second cam 17, so as to arrest the movement of the said cam 17. The roller 9*, mounted on the frame, or carrier, 7, of the gumming device 6, then acts on'the second cam 17, instead of on the stationary cam .10, and the gumming device 6, is caused to take a path clear of the said former without abag so that no gum is applied to the said former.
When however there is a bag on the said former the projection 14, on the arm 12, which is yieldably connected with'the folder 5, as aforesaid, willcome into contact with the bag and the cam 17, will not be arrested but will continue its movement and enablethe roller 9*, ofthejgum-applying device 6, to operate upon the'stationarycam 10, as hereinbefore described.
The various operating parts maybe actuated by any suitable arrangement of gearing,
. cams, and levers, or the like, from the main shaft 18, or any suitable part,.of the machine. In the drawings'the parts are shown as being operated by the. means-hereinafter described, butv I do not limitmyself to the use of these precise means.
The folders 1 and 3 are caused to oscillate on the shaft '2, respectively by cams 19, and i '24 v (respecti.vely acting in opposition to the springs 19 and 24*) secured to] the main shaft 18, which, throughantifriction rollers 20,. and 25-, actuates. bell-crank levers. 21, and
.. 26, respectivelyconnecte'd. by the rods .22,

(acting in opposition to a .spring-29 ljsecllred to the shaft 18, which actuates, through an antifrictionroller 30,- a-bell-crank lever 31, connected by a rod 32, to a projecting arm 33 of a segmental rack 34, in gear with a toothed 7 wheel 35, which gears with a toothed wheel 36, formed in one with the gumming device 6. The roller 8, which supplies gum to the device 6, is'rot'ated, at the proper time at the same peripheralspeed. as the said deviee6, by a cam .38, .(ac'tingin opposition to a spring 38) secured to theshaft 18, which actuates, through an antifric'tion roller 39,
a bell-crank lever'40, connected by a rod 41,.
and this movement is transmitted to the folder 4, by a toothed segment 50, in one with the folder 5, which engages with. a toothed segment-5.1, in one withthe folder 4.
"The. arm 12,'is free on thespindle' 11, of the folder 5, and it is caused'to move with the said folder towardthebag-by the con-. necting-spring 13, which tends to keep- proj ections 52 and 53, on the tails of the folder .and arm respectively, in engagement until the projecting part 14, of the arm is brought into contact with the-bag whichfthen, prevents any further forward movement. of'the said arm. l'lhe folder 5, thereafter continues to move forward and presses, 1 or creases, :the folds ofthe bagontO the folder 3, in readiness to receiver gum from the de vice 6, which is operated during theupward movement of thelsaid folder. 3. The further movement ofithe arm 12 (which-ispermitted by the absence of the bag) causes. a projection 55, on thesaid' arm to come against a projection: 56, onthe before-mentioned arm 15, and therebymo've this arminto the path of the stop 16, on .the cam 17, so that when the said cam turns on it. pivot. .2, withv the folder 3, itsmovement is limited by the stop 16, engaging with the arm 15, and upon-the arm of ithe' folder 3,. continuing its upward .movement, the rollerv9 engages with the said cam.1.7, (which. is of .largerfldiameterthan the cam 10) and the frame '7 is thereby caused to turn so that the device 6, clearsthe' .former X when the:said-.devicehasbeen brought to. approXimatelythe position in which it applies the gum.
These-11117, is yieldin-gly connected to the arm of the folder 3, by a spring 57, which keeps stops 58, and 59, on the said cam and folder, respectively, normally in contact.
The arm 15, is caused to move out of the path of the stop 16, by the projection 55, upon the return of the folder 5, engaging with another projection 60, on the arm 15.
Although I have described this invention as applied to a bag-forming machine it is not limited to such aplication.
lVhat I claim is 1. In apparatus for folding and applying adhesive matter to the ends of bags, or the like, the combination of a side folder turnablc on a center for folding down the first fold, and shaped to crease and splay out the.
outstanding portions of the bag end, a second turnable side folder for folding down the opposite side of the bag end and tem orarily holding it down, end folders mova le to crease the outstanding portions or cars of the bag end against the second folder While it remains temporarily in holdingdown position, means independent of the folders for applying adhesive after the second side folder has moved. from holdingdown position, and means for completing the movement of the end folders to fold down the end ears upon the side folds to complete the bag closure.
2. In apparatus of the construction specified in claim 1, the mounting of the adhesive applyin device on the arm of the second side fol er.
3. In apparatus of the construction specified in claims 1 and 2, the combination therewith of an adhesive supply roller, with which the applying device comes in contact on the forward stroke of the second side folder, and means for preventing such contact on the return stroke of said folder.
4. In apparatus of the construction specified in claim 1, the combination therewith of means associated with the end flap folders for preventing the operation of the adhesive applying device unless a bag blank be upon the former.
