To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD E. Dooenn and WILLIAM D. Wooos,- citizens of the United States, residing at Osage, in the county of Osage and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Guards; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acconn panying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cattle guards and particularly to what is known as cattle gates.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a gate of this character, constructed to be operated by the weight of the cars passing over the track.
A further object is to provide means for automatically returning the gate to its normal position after the cars of a train have passed thereover.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrange ments of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
We illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawing in which we have shown a plan view of a track with our invention applied thereto.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral, 5 indicates the rails of a track supported on suitable rail ties 6. Pivotally secured to the under side of the rails 5, as at 5, by means not shown, is a gate comprising a horizontal base rod 7, to which are connected the vertical bars 8, by means of bolts 9.
A horizontally movable bar 10 has connection with the levers 11 and 11, adjacent the ends of the bar 10, through the medium of rods 12 and 13, the rods 12 being connected to the ends of levers 11 and 11, while the central portions of the levers are connected to the outer forked ends of the rods 13, the opposite ends thereof support ing the coil springs 14 which have one of Specification of Letters Patent.

One end 15 of one of the levers 11 has secured thereto a pulley 16, through which the flexible cable 17 passes, one end of the cable 17 being secured to one end of the lever 11, whereby movement of the cable is trans mitted to the horizontall movable bar 10.
The flexible cable 17 a so passes over pulleys 18, while the opposite end of the cable 17 is connected to the horizontal bar 7 by means of the coiled spring 19. Weights 20 are also supported on the under side of the rod 7 and move the gate to its normal position after the train has passed thereby.
In view of the fact that the operating means for moving the gate in both directions is identical, we have only described the operating mechanism on one side of the gate.
In the operation of the device, the wheels of a train passing over the track engage the bar 10 and move the same laterally against the tension of springs 14 and which moves the levers 11 and 11, shortening the flexible connection and moving the gate to a plane equal with the plane of the rail ties or below the path of travel of the train. It is,
of course, obvious that a train moving in the opposite direction engages the mechanism on the opposite side of the gate with the result that the gate is moved in the opposite direction. The bars 10 may be of such length and so positioned relative to each other and to the trucks of cars passing over the rails, that when the front pair of wheels of the truck pass the end of one bar, the wheel of the second set upon the truck will come in contact with the opposite end of the barserving to hold the gate down and by the time the second set of wheels leaves the bar the forward set will have come in contact withthe nearest bar 10 in advance,
