Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
To all whom it may concem.'
Be it known that I, TANAJmo Imaam, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, and a resldent of South Bethlehem, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvama, have invented a new and Imlproved Carpen ters Marking-Line, of whic the following is-a full2 clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a marking llne adapted to be used by artilicers, and it deals more particularly with that type of device which embodies a reel within a housing, and a coloring-means associated with the reel-so that as the line is drawn off the reel colorlng matter will be dcposted on the line so that it can be trans marked in the usual manner.
' The invention has for its general objects to improve the construction and operation of devices of this character so as to be reliable and eicient in use, comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and so designed that the line will be eiectlvely charged with coloring matter automatically during the drawing out of the line from the case or housing.
A morevspecliie object of the invention is the revision of a case or housing having nov means for supporting and guiding the line, and simple, novel and eiective means for a lyin a coloring matter to the line.
Sti anot er object of the invention is the provision of a coloring means for applying coloring matter to the line, such means embodying a pad over which the line travels, and a wad pressed against the pad and line bg' a yielding follower carried I the lid of t e casing, while in the body o the casing is held the ad and wad.
With suc objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel featuresof construction and arran ment of arts which will be set forth wi particuarity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
4 In -the accom anying drawing, which illustrates one em diment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of .the implement with thev lid or cover partially Inclination of Lettera Patent.

The reel is arranged in the front end of the casing at the front side of a. vertical partition 6. Set in the compartment 7 at the rear of the partition is a frame for holding the coloring evice E and for holding the means to guide the line. This frame comprises a bottom plate 8, side plates 9 and transverse walls 10, all of which co l rate to form a well or chamber for holdmg the marking means E. In the chambers formed in the ends of this frame are guide pulleys 411 and 12 'over which the line C travels. The walls 10 have guide openin 13 arranged tangpntially to the bottoms o the ulle s 12, so t at the line can pass through t e co oring device E. i The coloring device E comprises a pad`14 set in the bottom of the chamber 15, and in direct contact with the tog `of the pad runs the line C. Over the pa 14 is a mass of cotton or other fibrous material forming a compression pad or wad 16 the bottom region of which may have coloring matter so as to assist in depositing coloring matter on the line. TheV resser pad 16 is pressed downwardly by a ollower in the form of a plate 17 which is carried by the cover B and enters the top of the chamber 15. The follower is attached to the cover b springs 18. When the cover is raised the fo lower moves out of the chamber 15 so that the resser pad can be removed for applying co oring matter to the lower pad 14 and to the bottom region of the presser 1pad.
The free end of the ine C is rovided with apeg22 formed withahan e28, the line being passed through an eye 24 in the eg and anchored at 25 on the handle 23. he
peg is entered in the outlet alerture 26 of the casing when the line is fu y wound up.
Inusingthe devicathepeg22issetu in the work in the proper position andvt en the user moves awa from the peg with the implement in his ands, and durin this time the line is paid out, and when t e desired point is reachedv the line is held taut in relation to the work and then drawn away and snapped against the work to mark a line thereon.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the princi le of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desiredras fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus describedA my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. -A marking implement of the class described comprismg a casing, a reel mounted in .the casixcizuali.l frame in the casing and including a ber having apertures, a line on the reel and passi through the chamber by the way of the said aigu-tures, guiding means on the frame for t e line, coloring means in the chamber, a cover for the casing, and means mounted on the cover for applying pressure tothe coloring means.
' 2. A marking implement of the class described com rising a casing, aree] mounted therein, a c amber in the casing coloring means in the chamber, a line attac ed to the reel and extending through the chamber; guide pulleys mounted at o posite sides of 46 the chamber for the line, an a pressure device acting on the colori means to compress the same against the ine.
3. A marking implement of the class de scribed comprising a body, a cover hi y 50 connected with the body, a reel in the y, aA marking line connected with the reel, a chamber in the body havin a rtures in its l, opposite walls through AWhic e line passes, guiding means outside the chamber and ad- 56 jacent the apertured walls for ding the said line, a ad in the bottom of t e chamber and over w ich the line has arubbing contact, a body of fibrous material disposed in the chamber over the line and in contact e0 withA the pad, and a spring-pressed follower carried b the cover and arranged fto enter the cham r for applying pressure to the fibrous material.
4. A marking implement of the class de- 5 scribed comprising a box-like body, a reel therein, a markin line 'on the reel a frame mounted in the ody andformed with a chamber having apertures in its opposite walls, tguide pulleys on the frame at o `posite es of the chamber and arran in co6 rative relation with the .a rtures for gui g-the line into and out of t e chamber, a pad in the chamber for applying coloring matter to the line, a mass o fibrous ma terial over the ad and line, a cover for the body, and ayi ding element carried by the cover for compressing the said fibrous material into engagement with the line.
