SPRING-FRAME FOR VEHICLE-WHEELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1918.
Application filed October 19, 1917. Serial No. 197,477.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOSEPH PRONOVOS'I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Frames for Vehicle-VVheelsz and he does hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spring frames for use upon vehicle wheels, with a view of afi'ording efficient means to take up vibration incident to a wheel passing over rough roads or obstacles, and serving as a substitute for a pneumatic tire.
The present invention consists in the provision of a device of this nature, having various details of construction and combinations of parts, and generally improving upon the form of spring apparatus covered by my Patent #l,22(),889.
provided with oppositely disposed elongated slots A each slot terminating at corresponding ends in a circular outlined portion A The member A has one end bent, as at A and has a concaved portion A and an end portion A bent parallel to the oppositely disposed elongated portions of the member and engages an inwardly turned portion A near the other end of the member. The second end of the member A is concaved,
or hook-shaped, as at A and rests against the inner convcxed portion of the hooked end.
The member B has oppositely disposed slotsB' and at corresponding ends opposite those in the member A has circular outlined portions 13 D has oppositely disposed recesses E the portions ofthe block intermediate said recesses being adapted to be guided in the registering slots in the two members A and B. The opposite faces of said block, intermediate the two members A and B, are concaved, as at F, the recess upon the outer face of the block being adapted to contact with a pin or roller H, adapted to be connecter to the disk or hub portion H of a wheel.
A spring, designated by letter N, is bent at its longitudinal center, forming a crosspiece O, which engages the hooked end of the member A, the arms of the wire being bent to form coils R, and the free ends of the wire are passed through registering slots in the two members A and B, and the angled ends T of the wire, which extend in opposite directions, engage the concaved recess in the face of the block D holding the latter against the inwardly turned ends B of the member B. A pin or roller, designated by letter S, is adapted to be positioned intermediate the concaved recess formed in the 7 'member A and the adjacent concaved por tion of the member B.
It will be noted upon reference to the drawings that the angled ends T of the spring extend around the corners intermediate the two concaved surfaces and interlocking therewith. in such a manner as to prevent the device rattling, and aiiording substantial means for holding the ends of the wire in proper relation with the block.
What I claim to be new is:
1. A spring frame for vehicle whee-ls, comprising two U-shaped members having sliding connection with each other and provided with oppositely disposed registering slots, the ends of the inner of said members being bent to over-lap each other in opposite directions, a block having contracted portions movable within said slots, a coiled spring bent upon itself at its longitudinal center and engaging the inner of said bent ends, the arms of the wire extending A movable cross-piece or blockthrough registering slots in said members and having ends bent in opposite directions and engaging the inner face of said block.
2. A spring frame for vehicle wheels, comprising two U-shaped members having sliding connections with each other and provided with oppositely disposed registering slots, the ends of the inner of said members being bent to over-lap each other in opposite directions, a block movable within said slot, the opposite faces of said block being concaved, a spring bent upon itself at its longitudinal center and engaging the inner of said over-lapping ends, the arms of the spring passing through registering slots in said members, and having right-angled ends disposed in opposite directions and engaging one of the grooves in said block.
8. A spring frame for vehicle wheels, comprising two U-shaped members having sliding connections with each other and provided with oppositely disposed registering slots, the ends of the inner of said members being bent in opposite directions and over lapping each other, the ends of the outer member bent in opposite directions and against the outer face thereof, a block having oppositely disposed recesses, the contracted portions intermediate the recesses engaging registering slots in the members, a
coiled spring bent upon itself at its longitudinal center and engaging the inner of said overlapping ends, the ends of the spring bent at angles and engaging the inner face of said block.
4. A spring frame for vehicle wheels, comprising two U-shaped members having sliding connections with each other and provided with oppositely disposed registering slots, each having corresponding ends terminating in enlarged circular outlined por tions, the ends of the inner member bent to overlap each other, the outer over-lapping portion being concaved and the inner end formed into a. hook, a block having contracted portions movable within registering slots in said members, the opposite faces of the block being concaved, a coiled spring bent upon itself at its longitudinal center and engaging said hooked end, the arms of the spring passing through registering slots in the members'and terminating in angled ends engaging the grooved ends of said block.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
