' AIR-INTAKE REGULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented July 2 191 8.
Application filed September 20, 1916.. Serial-No. 121,271.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND J. PRICE, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Montague, in the county of Siskiyou and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Intake Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device forregulating the intake of air to the mixing chamber of a gasolene motor.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a regulator of this character disposed in the manifold of the motor whereby may be obtained for regulating the gas mixer before it passes into the motor.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the preferred embodiment and'in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which;
Figure l is a perspective View of the device showing the same attached to the manifold.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the device. V
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3+3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawing, wherein is illus' trated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the manifold pipe 1 is of the usual construction and is adapted to take the air into the mixing chamber for mixing with the gas for providing a proper mixture for the motor.
The present improvementcomprises a cylindrical chamber 3 with an integrally formed stem 4 having screw threads whereby the stem may be screw threadedly mounted in an opening 5 formed in the manifold 1. The stem 4 is hollow and thereby establishes communication between the interior of the cylindrical chamber 2 and the manifold pipe 1. The open end of the chamber 2 is provided with exterior screw threads for receiving the interior screw threads of a cap 6. The cap 6 is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced apertures 7 which communicate with the interior of the chamber 2. For
2 provided on itsend wall 2 opening and closingthe opening 7 I provide a valve 8 comprising a stud 9 depending centrally into the chamber 2 and a circular flange 10 is integrally formed with the stud and is in contact with the interior of the cover 6. An integrally formed stem 12 extends through a central opening in the cover and receives an operating lever 13 having connection with a handle it which may be reciprocated for opening and closing the valve. Interposed between the closed wall of the chamber 2 and the valve flange 10 is a coil compression spring 15 which surrounds the stud 9. This coil spring holds the valvefiange 1O tightly in engagement with the cover 6 and thereby prevents the air from passing around the edge of the flange and through any one of the openings A segmental slot 16 is provided in the flange 10 and, when the valve is in open position, this slot communicates with the openings 7 and thereby establishes communica tion between the interior of the chamber 2 and theexterior thereof. When the valve is in this position a maximum quantity of air will rush through the openings and into the air chamber 2 and will then pass through into the manifold ipe l and thus onward to the mixing cham er.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable mixer has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim hereunto appended. I
I claim:
A device of the character described comprising an'air chamber having one end provided with a stem havinga hollow interior communicating with the interior of the chamber, a cap mounted onthe opposite end of the chamber, and provided with a central circular'opening, and a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings, a valve element including a stem extending through the central opening in the cap, the said stem carrying a relatively large disk disposed within the chamber and in close contact with the inner face of'the cap, the said flange having depending therefrom a stud, a coil compress1on springembracing the stud and inter posed between the disk and the end of the that slight changes in the i saidchamber for normally maintaining the disk in close Contact with the cap, .thesaid disk having a segmental slotequal inlength to the distance between the end openings in the said series of circumferentially spaced openings in the cap, and a lever attachedto the sten ofgthe said valve element.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
