Description
E S TE o rma JOHN KYLE, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO MIEHLE PRINTING PRESS & MA NTJ' ADJUSTABLE GRIPPEIt-lPAD.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
, Application-filed Aprill l, 1916. Serial No.91,02'0.
To all whom it may mea Be it known that 1, JOHN KYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county ofClark and State'of Ohio,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable ,Gri per-Pads,
. of which the following is aspeci cation. 7
Theobject of the inventionis the provision of improved gripper pads for printing presses, and means for leveling and clamping in. position the gripper pads, whereby to uniformly raise or lowerthe same inorder to adapt them tovarying thickness of paper.
In order that the inventionmay be read: ily understood, a preferred embodimentof the same is set forth in theaccompanying drawing and in the description based there on. As, however, the invention is susceptible of embodiment in other and varied constructional forms without: departure from the essence thereof, the drawing and description are to be taken in an illustrativeand not in an unnecessarily limiting sense- In H the drawing- I Figure 1 is a fragmentary cross sectional view through a portion of the printing cylinder showing in side elevation the arrangement of the grippers, the gripper pads and the blanket clamping device;
Fig. 2 is a face View of the combined blanket clamp and gripper pad support;
Fig. 3 is a rear view of Fig. 2; and Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through the device showing the gripper pad adjustment;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the plunger upon which the gripper pad rests; and
Fig. 6 is a similar View of the gripper pad block itself.
In the drawings the cylinder is indicated at 11 mounted in the usual manner in the side frame of the press and cut away at 12 to provide for the mounting of the various devices by means of which the blanket or plate is clamped in position and the gripper pads are held in proper adjustable position for cooperation with the grippers themselves.
As illustrated, upon the side wall of the cutaway p0rtion'12 of the cylinder is disposed a bracket 13 serving as a support for a shaft 14, the angular position of which is a controlled by means of the arm 15and the set screw 16. Upon this shaft at proper intervals are mounted the supports 17 for the blanket clamp 18 and the gripperpad 19,.these supports being held in adjusted position by means ofv the-clamping screw 20 as will be readilyunderstood. The shaft 21 serves as a support for the grippers 22 mounted in the usual manner to cooperate with the gripper pads 19, which latter are cubical blocks of wood orother non-metallic substance.
The head ofthe gripper pad support 17 has formed therein a recess, here shown as being square in cross section, which recess accommodates a plunger plate 23 having a stem 24: extending through a bore of the support into a transverse chamber 25. Upon the-plunger plate 23 rests the block 19 forming the gripper pad. The lower endof the stem 2 1=is preferably beveled as indicated at 26.to. correspond to the conedsurface 27 of an adjusting screw 28 the head and coned Patented July 2, 1918.
portion of which is accommodated within the chamber 25 whilethe end thereof has threaded engagement with the support at 29. The head of the gripper pad support is slit to render the same expansible and contractible within a limited extent and is provided with ears 30, 30 traversed by the clamping screw 31, whereby the head may be clamped upon the inserted and adjusted gripper pad 19.
It will be readily apparent that by turning the screw head 28 to adjust the position of the same within the chamber 25 by means of the threaded connection 29 the screw will be advanced or retracted and the plunger plate 23 raised or lowered by means of the engagement of the stem 24 with the, cone face 27 of the screw, thus raising and lowering the gripper pad 19 toward or from the periphery of the cylinder in a substantially radial direction. The radial adjustment of. the gripper pad having been effected, the
clamping screw 31 is turned to contract thetallic gripper pads. I have found'tliatpads of material other than metal, such as Wood, afford a better pad surface between which and the grippers themselves to gripthe sheet. By making these nonmetallic pads in the form of cubical blocks s'ea ted -in a rectangular recess, the pads may be turned- Over from time totime as the surface maybecome irregularly Worn to present a fresh operative surface.
I claim:
1. The combination with" a printing" press cylinder, and the grippers, ofgripjg)"er"v pad supports provided with equilateral' polygo nal recesses and correspondingly shapcdnen metallic gripper p ads seated insaid recesses, whereby the pads may be turned to exposeany' side at will for cooperation With the grippers.
2. The combination with aprinting' resscylinder, and the grippers, of gripper pjad" supports" provided" with equilateralcubical recesses, and cubical Wooden gripper pads seated in said recesses, whereby the pads may be turned to expose any side at will for cooperation with the grippers:-
3. The combination with a printing press cylinder, and the grippers, of gripper'pad' supports, gripper pads guided for movement relative to the-supports,aconed adjusting" member rotatably niountetlin the-*su-ppbrtsandarranged to act upon the pad wherebythe rotation of the adjusting member Will raise and lower the pad, and means to clamp the-pad: in adjusted position relative to the support.
4:. The combination with a printing press cy1i n'der,-a1idthe grippers, of gripper pad supports provided With rectangular recesses, cubical wooden gripper pads seatedin said recesses, a coned adjusting member rotatably mounted in" the'supports and bearing upon the pad and upon the cone whereby the rotation of the adjusting member will raise and loWer' thepad? 5: The combination with a printing'press' cylinder, and the grippers, of gripper p'a'd supports provided i With rectangular recesses, cubicalwoo'd'en gripper pads s'eated'in said recesses, a coned screw transversely threaded in the support below the pad; plunger bearing upon the pad and upon the cone,
Wherebyth'e rotation ofthe screw Willraise and'lower thepad, and means to-clamp the Walls of the support upon the pa d-to ina-in tain the'latter in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed iny name in the-presence oftw'o su'b scribiirgwitnesses;
' JOHN KYLE.
