E. J. WORCESTER BL A. F. PifniNTicEf` Improvement in Drilling-Machines.
No. 127,132, U "Patnte'dfwlay'21;8725

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD J. WORCESTER AND ALBERT F. PRENTIOE, OF WORCESTER, MAS- SAOHUSETTS, ASSIGNORS TO ALBERT F. PRENTIOE, VERNON F. PREN- TIOE, AND IRA W. JONES, OF SAME PLAGE. g
iMPRovEMENT IN DRILLING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD J. WoRcEs- TER and ALBERT F. PRENTIGE, both of the city and county of Worcester and Gommonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drills; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specication, and in which- Figure l represents a front view o'f our improved drill, and Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same.
The nature of our invention consists in the combination and relative arrangement with the supporting-frame and drill-spindle of driving and regulation shafts, operating gears, and balance -wheeh all constructed and arranged for operation as shown in the accompanyin g drawing and hereinafter described.
On the drawing, the part marked A represents the frame. B indicates the drill-spindle, which is supported in the bearings a a. C indicates the feeding-screw, connected to the upper end of the spindle B by a loose coupling, O', and arranged through the center of a revolvin g quill, D, which is supported in the bearing b at the upper part of the frame. The screw C is prevented from turning by a pin, c, which projects from the rear side of the screw and works in a groove on the frame A, while the quill D is revolved by the action of the pawl d upon its ratchet-wheel D', and serves as a nut upon the screw G for moving the drill-spindle B. E indicates the crank-shaft, from which motion is transmitted to the drillspindle B by means of the bevel-gears F Ff;
. the latter being connected with the spindle B byaspline and groove. Shaft E isl supported in the bearings a/ a', and is provided with a crank, E', which crank can be adjusted to a greater or less length to increase or diminish its leverage, as speed or power may be desired. G indicates a balance-wheel for regulating the power and giving momentum to assist in carrying the crank past the dead-points. The
pawl d and ratchet DI; said lever is fulcrumed on a projecting portion, g, ofthe frame A, and
is actuated by a cam, M, on the crank-shaft, substantially as -in the ordinary manner.
By constructing and arranging the parts as herein shown and described a very compact and convenient drill is produced, and one which is quite easy of operation, as the balance-wheel G, which revolves rapidly, greatly assists in carrying the crank past the dead-points, and thus enables the operator to run the drill with a steady and uniform motion, while, at the same time, by arranging the spur-gears E I and bevel-gear F upon one side of frame A and the balance-wheel G upon the other side of said frame, but little space, comparatively, is taken up or occupied outside of the frame A by the mechanism for giving motion to and regulating the action of the drill-spindle B.
Having described our improved drill, what we claim therein as new and of-our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the frame A and drill spindle B, of shafts E K, gears F F" H I, and balance-wheel G, said parts being constructed and arranged in relation to each other, substantially as shown and described.
EDWARD J. WOROESTERB ALBERT F. PRENTIOE.
