LATCH.
Application filed September 1, 1914. Serial No.,859,719.
To aZZ 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LEE S. CHADWICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Latches, yof which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being yhad to the accompanying drawings. f
This invention relates generally to latches, Y and particularlyy to an improved latch that is especially suitable for use lin connection with oven doors.
The invention has for its object the provision of a latch that is simple of construction and operation; the provision of a latch that actively maintains a tight joint between the closure and frame in connection is very durable and that is comparatively.y economical of production; and the pro-V vision of a latch that is neat andattractive of appearance. f'
To these ends li provide a latchthat 1s composed, principally, of Vsheet metal-stamp# ings `and is constructed, in Aits preferred form, as illustrated in' the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1` is a fragmentary front elevation of an oven that is equipped with a latch of myfinvention; Fig. 2 is a plan, and Fig. 3 a right hand end ele. vation of the parts shown in Fig. 1; while Figll is a central horizontal section on the lines 41-41 of Figs. 1 and 3.-
llnthe drawings the wall 1'of the oven is shown at l and the door at 2, each of which is formed of a-metal shell that is filled with some non-heatV conducting material, such as ofthe base plate, and these brackets extend i beyond the edge of the door and have their outer ends turned down to form stops 8.
e the base plate 6 and brackets `7 are pref Specification of Letters Patent.

of my invention, comprising `a single sheet metal stamping. 1t will be observed, especially from Fig. 4, that the forward edge of the bar 12'is turned back upon itselfat 13 in order to give al smooth round surface to .60 are connected by a bar 12, the end pieces 1l` and the bar 12, in the present embodiment the forward edge of the bar, and also for i the purpose of strengthening the same. Between the outer ends of the end plates 1l there is supported a handle l5 which is preferably formed of a piece of tubing, the ends whereof are contained within the caps 16. The handle and caps are clamped in place by means of the tie rod 17 which has its threaded ends received by the hollow screws 18 which pass through apertures in the end plates `11 and are screwed firmly onto the ends ofthe tie rod 17. This construction of handle is especially advantageous when the grip, comprising the tube 15, is nished in enamel. It iswell known that enamel is brittle and that it will chip and scale oft" if the partsto which it is applied are distorted or strained. Further# ln the construction above described, the end caps 16 conceal the ends of the enameled` tube 15, where the enamel coating is apt to be uneven and unsightly, and these caps may be nickel plated or provided with some similar finish that will not be affected by the clamping action to which the caps are subjected.
A leaf spring 20 is secured to the base plate 6, adjacent each of the brackets 7, by a screw 21, and the free end of each spring is turned up under the rear edge of the barA 12. Under theiniiuence of these springs, the swing member of the latch is caused to assume what will be referred to as its normal position, with the edges of the end pieces 11 in engagement with the stops 8.
Secured vto the forward edge ofthe oven wall 1, is the keeper 25 which is formed of resilient material and has a base flange 26 through which the keeper is Secured te the oven wall, by means of the screws 27. The l free edge of the keeper is turned toward the door 2, at substantially right angles to itsl bodyportiomand is then turned back upon itself as shown at 28. f By this arrangement a smooth, rounded edge is given to the keeper, somewhat similar to the rounded edge p13 .of the bai-12. u Y
Itrwil'llbenoted that when the swinging member of the latch is innormalipositionl and the door is moved to cause the bar l2 to approachthe keeper A25,1the-advancing side of the bar 12 will be presented to the roundedfedge 28` of the keeper in an oblique plane, 'similar to the action ofthe inclinedv nose of the ordinary vlatchbar, with Vrespect to its keeper. `rIn the :act of closing the'door,
passedeach other` and they forward edgey of l the bar-fis contained within'the angle lbetweentthe overturnededge 28 and the body portionfof the f. keeper 25,the springs `20 .and
" the. keeper will remain under sutcient ten1 y howevenfwill r'permit-'a slight separationlbeesion to .'causezthe fedgeof the'doorf to be constantly `gpressed:v against its seat and thereby nsllle .afperfectfjointf a l w The resiliencyr of vthe keep erv land sp rings,

'I havefshown-fherein what Il consider, at-
the present time', to be the preferred embodi- `ment of my invention, althoughl do not limit myself to suchf'construction except as required the' terms ofthe; annexed claims andjtheT state of the' prior f art. Furthermoreft have referred to the part wherewith f the'v edge of :fthe door or closure coperates, as
the oven wall.` This might obviously be the edge'pof any opening which thefdoor is intendedtoclose, and mightbetter be" con-I' sidered, lbroa'dly'fa frame/It is thus referred to in the claims. y

' 3. The combination, with a frame and a closure therefor, of a base plate that is carried by the closure, a pair of brackets which extend from the base plate and beyond the edgeof the closure where they are provided with stops, a latch member which comprises a pair of end platesy that are connected by a bar, pivotal connections between the endy platesand the aforesaid brackets, springs for moving the latch member so that its end plates'v engage the aforesaid stops, and a keeper of resilient material that is supported by -the'frame in a position to be engaged by the'bar of the latch member when theclosure is in closed position.
t. The combination, with a frame and a' closure therefor, of a base plate, a bracket rising from each-end thereof and projecting beyond the edge ofthe' closure and having, each', `a stop, the brackets and the base plate being-formed of a single piece of metal', a latch member that comprises a pair of end plates which are connected by an integrali-'bar one edge whereof is turned over against itself,V pivotal connections between the end plates and the aforesaid brackets, a spring that is secured to thebase plate and engages the bar of the latch member whereby said latch member is moved to cause its end plates to engagethe stops of the brackets, and a keeper that is supported from the frame and hasl a portion that projects outwardlyfrom the frame and is then turned over in thek direction ofthe closure` the turned over portion being doubled back upon itself and snpportedin a position to be'engaged by' the bar of the latch member.
'5. The combination, with a frame' and a closure therefor. of a base plate carried by the closure vand having formed integral therewith at each end a bracket which projects bevond the edge'of the closure and is provided witha stop,'a latch member comprising apairi of end kplates that are connected by an integral bar, `pivotal connections between the end plates of the latch member and the aforesaid brackets, a spring; that tends to move the latch member in a direction to cause its end plates to engage the stops of the brackets, the shape and pr0- portions of the parts being such as to cause the bar of the latch member to be in an oblique plane with respect to the direction of movement of the edge of the closure, a keeper that is formed of resilient material and that is supported from the frame and comprising a body portion and a portion that is turned over in the direction of the closure wherewith the bar of the latch member is adapted to engagewhen the closureets, and a keeper having a bar receiving fportion that is adapted to contain the a oresaid bar.
7. A latch of the character described comprising, in combination, a base plate having a pair of brackets formed integral therewith, each bracket being provided with a stop, a latch member comprising a keeper engaging bar and a pair of end plates formed integral therewith, a handlesupported between the end plates, pivotal connections between the end plates and the aforesaid brackets, means tending to swing the latch member in a direction to cause its endy plates to engage the aforesaid stops, and a resilient keeper having a bar receiving portion t0 that is adapted to contain the aforesaid bar. lin testimony whereof,y ll hereunto ax my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
