WINFRED MllIDGE BROOKS, OF EAST ORANGE, NEWQTEESEY, ASSIGNOB, TO J. BROOKS l Q '85 00., OF NEW YORK,"N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
Box-spear. seat.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, Mild.
Application filed March 22, 1913. Serial No. 223,922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat l, Wrxrnnn Mrmcn America, and a resident of East Orange, in the State er New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box- Strap Seals, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provlde a simple, economical and eficient seal for.
metal box straps, capable of resisting heavy tension on said straps.
The invention consists in a novel mode of interlocking portions of the box strap itself in connection with the novel auxiliary seal part, hereinafter more particularly described.
specification as part thereof, in which like One sheet of drawings accompanies this reference characters denote like parts. 7
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a box securedby two box straps sealed in accordancewith the present invention. Figs. 2, 3 and .4 show back, face and end-views respectively of one type of the improved auxiliary seal part, unsealed; Fig.
5 shows a back view of this type sealed.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 show back, face and end views respectively' of a modified type of the improved auxiliary seal part, unsealed; Fig. 9 shows aback view of this modified type sealed. Fig. 10 shows an enlarged cross-sectional view taken on the. line mm of The improved auxiliary seal part is preferably constructed of substantially rigid sheet metal, and comprises a flatbody portion 0 having two parallel sides turned down .and under]? forming substantially a sleeve adapted to receive two thicknesses of metal box strap. Each of said parallel sides 6 has two slits d extending into the depth of said parts 6 as shown in Figs-'2 and 6. These slits d maybe said to define a waist part c (Fig. 2) or c (Fig. 6) embracedbe-- tween them. The box straps in the drawings are indicated by e.
In operation, the ends of the box strap .arethreaded from opposite ends throu h the auxiliary seal parta so that they ie one upon the other, their lateral edges *e m braced by the side and'bottom portions 6 of the seal part. When ,the box strap *has been drawnsulficiently tight by some suitable tightening device, the waist part .0
(Fig. 2 or c (Fig. 6 is constricted by a. ing pressed downwardand under by a suitable tool, shearing the portions of box strap embraced thereby along the lines of the slits d and folding said portions over within shown in Fig. 10. p
The only difierence between the types of said I waist of the auxiliary seal part as seal part illustrated by Figs. 2 and 6 lies in the waist parts '0 and-0, the former it will be noted being adapted to meet after the sealing operation as shown in Fig. 5, while the latter is shortened and does not meet as shown in'Flg. 9.
Thesealed jointproduced by this process:
, Fig. 10.
A plurality of waist parts maybe provided where desirable and. the depth of the. slits and the corresponding extent of the construction of the waist part or parts may be modified to suit particular uses. Other modifications will s'uggest themselves, to those skilled in the art, withihthScOpeof the present invention.
Havingthus. fully described my invention, ll cla1m2 3 ,1. A 'mode of securing metal box. straps; consisting of overlapping the ends of the box strap through an auxiliary metal'sleeve adapted .to embrace aportion of their edges and shearing, turning down and under portionsof thelr edges thus embraced in conunct1on with the corresponding parts of the edges of said auxilia'y sleeve part, sub 'stantially as. specified.
2. .An improved seal member for sealing metal box straps, consisting of a fiat body portion having two parallel sides turned down and under to form a sleeve adapted to receive the overlapped-ends of a box strap and'having two slits extending in from each .side perpendicular thereto through and to the depth of the said under-turned or hottom parts of the sleeve.
3. An improved seal member for sealing box straps consisting of a sleeve or. substantially rigid metal having a fiat ibody portion, two parallel sides bent therefrom down and under to receive and embrace the edges of the overlapped ends of a box strap, said sleeve having a waist part defined by lllll two slits extending in from each of said "pa-r allel sides, said 'Waist part being adapted to being constricted by the pressing down and under ofthe parts between said slits on each side, such constriction operating to shear and turn down and under With said parts or" the portions of box straps embraced thereby. v
4. An improved metallic seal part for box straps adapted to admit the ends of a box strap 'endwise and to embrace their lateral edges, such seal part being" formed by parallel rectangular bends and having slits extending in from its sides defining a waist part adapted to be constricted, interlocking therewith the embraced portions of the box straps, substantially as specified.
