Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent/ed iliullly 2, ibid..
Application filed May 1917. Serial No. 167,194.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. BRAWNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Luggage-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices of the character designed for fastening luggage or parcels inplace as, for instance, on the step or running board of a vehicle.
An object of this'invention is to produce a device of-this character of the greatest simplicity and inexpensiveness of construction, also one in which it will be easy to fasten the luggage.
titi
vformer invention of This device is an improvement on vmy June 6, 1916, No.' 1,185,763. in the former patent notches and a detent were provided to prevent relative movement between the bar and the adjustable U-shaped clamping ,memben In this present device other means are provided to prevent movement of the clamping member away from the bar, said means being formed by the strap which en circles the luggage.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the subjoincd detail description.
The accompanying drawingsl illustrate' the invention Figure 1 is a side elevation of :u vehicle having two of the newlyinvented devices in place on the running board thereof, luggage held by the fasteners also being shown.
Fig. Qis an enlarged side elevation of one of the luggage fasteners shown in F ig. l, the strap being in the luggage-liolding position. i
Fig.- 3 is an enlarged plan view of the lug` gage fastener shown in Fig. Q, portions of the strap being broken away to contract the view. l Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the-luggage fastener, the strap being omitted for clcarness of illustration.
Fig. 5 is a` side elevation analogous to Fig. 2 of a modification of the invention.
Fig. l is a. detail partly in section on line indicated by Fig. 5.'
Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail of the, outer cnd'of the adjustable'clampand adjacent parts in Fig. 5, the buckle and abutment being shown in section.,
'ihere is provided a bar l which is prei"- erabl y fiat ae shown'und is designed to rest parcel holder patentedj upon a .support such, for example as the running board Al or any bar 1 is upturned said arm portion is carried an adjustable clamping screw ,4. The screw 4 is formed with an enlarged head 5 desi ned to en e g gag the under face of the running board A or other portion of the vehicle or support to which the device is attached so as to clamp the bar l thereto. The end of the screw opposite the head is provided with a handle 6 whereby the screw may be readily turned to tighten it against the running board.
Extending from opposite edges of the bar l at the end thereof having the clamping member 3 are ears 7, the plane of said ears coinciding with the plane of thebar 1 so that the upper face of the bar 1 is dat from the. upturned endv to the end having said ears. These ears 7 slidably receive the arms of an extensible U-shaped clamping member 8 which may be formed of heavy wire or the-like. The clamping member 8 is shiftable endwise relative to the bar 1, and the plane in which the arms of said clamping member lie coincides with the plane of said bar. The web portion 9 of this clamping member 8 is directed upwardly at right angles to the arm portions to form an inverted U-shaped luggage-engaging abutment. The upturncd end l0 having the eye.. 2 also forms a luggage-engaging abutment.
To theabntment 9 of the clamping member 8 is secured a strap 11 formed of webbing, leather or other suitable material and said strap is rove through a buckle 12 and thence through the U-shapcd abutment 9 so as to form a loop 13 between the buckle and the abutment.
` strap extends lengthwise of the upper face of the bar l in a straight portion 14 which rests upon and substantially covers the upper face of thev bar thus insuring against marring of the luggage or parcels held in the device. From the straight portion 14a the strap 1l passes through the eye 2 of the uptnrned portion l0 and from said eye the `'other suitable part' vof a vehicle to which the luggage is to be 2 and the opposite ,l
to cooperate with iny liti
From the abutment 9 the v lilith strap passes along one edge and the top of the luggage, indicated at B in Fig. 1, and passes along the opposite side of the luggage and thence through the buckle 12 sovas tened is much more easily and quickly acto be engaged by the tongue 15 of said buckle in a manner well understood.
In practice one or more of the dey'ices will be clamped upon the running board A of the vehicle as shown in Fig. 1 so that the bar 1 will extend transversely of vthe running board, or upon any other suitable part of the vehicle and the luggage B or other articles to be held will be placed upon the bar 1 against the abutment 10 so that the weight of the luggage aids in holding the bar in place. The clamping member 8 having previously been drawn out will be forced in so that the abutment 9 will engage the luggage. At the same time the strap 11 will be drawn uptight and fastened in the' buckle 12 in a manner well understood.
It is noted that when the luggage is thus fastened in place the tendency of the pull of the strap 11 is t0 force the abutment 9 toward the bar 1 and that said abutment cannot be moved away from the luggage because of the portion 14 of the strap being rove through the clamping member and through the eye 2. Thus the clamping member S is held without the provision of the ,not-ches and detent disclosed in the above noted patent. Thus not only is this device simpler and cheaper to manufacture than the former patented device but the adjustment thereof to the luggage to be fascomplished.
It is understood that changes of construetion from that described above may be made Within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
In the form of the invention in Figs. 1 to 4 the strap 11 is not fastened to the buckle 12 but is only fastened to the abutment t) "so that the buckle is slidable along the strap and shortening ofthe adjustable .loop 13 can .goecur to take un the slack in the strap portion 14 when the clamping'member 3 is pushed inward toward the luggage.
In. the form of the invention in Figs.
5 'to 7 the strap 11 is fastened to the buckle, '12 by reason of it being fast in the loop 1i',
which is secured on both sides of the abut nient 9 by rivets 1G so that slack can only be taken up in the strap 11, when the clamp ing member 3 is pushed inward toward tho luggage, by drawing the strap 1l through the eye 2 to take up the slack in the Istrap portion 1l. 'Though generically the invcntion covers thisI form as well as that in Figs. 1 to 1, the latter is preferable.
l claim:
1. A luggage fast-euer comprising a tlat bar having an eye at one end and having ears extending laterally from its edges adja cent the opposite end, a clamping member having straight arms shftably engaging the ears, means connected with the bar to fasten the bar to a support, a buckle, and a strap rove through the clamping member between the arms thereof and through the eye and lying on the upper face ofvthe bar aml fastened to the clamping member and form-- ing.a 1oop.rove through the buckle.
.2.. A luggage fastener comprising a tlat bar having an eye at one end and having ears extending laterally from its edges adjacent the opposite end, a clamping member having straight arms shiftably engaging theA ears, means connected with the bai' to fasten the bar to a support, a buckle, and a strap rove through the clamping member lmtween the arms thereof and through the eye and lying on the upper face of the bar and fas tened to the clamping member and forming a loop rove through the buckle, the buckle being slid-able along the strap.
Signed at Los Angeles, California, this Qd dayof May, 1917.
