Be it vknown that l, DENNIS F. Sumner, a citizen of the United States residing at Bozeman, in the county of "(l State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tabulating Devices, of which the following is a specification. a
The present invention relates to improvements in tabulating devices, especially adapted for use in connection with typewriting machines, and other machines which utilize a tabulating apparatus as a part of the machine. g
The primary object of the invention is the provision of means readily accessible to the operator and designed for setting the tabulator' stop singly or one at the time, or for clearing all of the tabulator stops simultaneously. The invention involves the utilization of a device which is simple both in construction and operation, is durable,compactly arranged, and applicable without alteration to the typewriter, to most all standard machines now in use employing the customary. notched tabulating rack bar.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of stops, and means for operating these steps to either set them or clear them, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the preferred embodiment of the invent1 on as illustrated in the drawings, 1 have indlcated the typewriting machine frame by the numeral 1, and the typewriter is equipped with'keys as indicated at 2, and at the rear the customary rack bar 3 is indicated, which extends across the rear upper edge of the j I typewriting machine, and in connection with thls rack bar I employ a number of stops 4t, and there are as many stops, as there are notches 3 in the tabulator rack bar 3. crank bar or rod is secured in the arm by means of a lock bolt or screw 25, and the crank rod-or bar is journaled in the bracket 15 so that it can be oscillated in this bracket. The crank has a bent end 26, and
this end or arm 26 of the crank bar is adapted to operate the vertically reciprocable arm 27 by engagement of the crank arm 26 in the notch 28 of the arm. The joint between the bifurcated end 20 of the lever, and the lever arm 21 is loose, the lever arm 21 is fixed on the crank bar 24, and the engagement of the crank arm with the notched vertical arm 27 is loose. A spring 29 engages under the lower end of the crank arm 26, and tends to lift it, and it will be seen that by pressing down on the key 18, the crank arm 26 will turn down the arm 27, and by lifting the key 18, the crank arm 26 will lift the arm 27. The arm 27 is provided with a slot 30 at its lower end, and this slotted end of the arm is guided in its movements by the bracket 15, which is strad dled by this slotted end of the arm. Near its upper end the arm is slotted at 31, and a. screw 32 in the bracket 16 serves to guide the arm in'its movement, the lug 33 of the bracket alsoassistingin guiding the arm. At its upper'end this arm is formed with an offset outwardly projecting finger 34 which I shall call the depressing finger, and just beneath, this finger but spaced therefrom is an elevating fin er 35, and in Fig. .3 the utility of these gers will be plainly evident. Thus by depressing the key 18, the arm 27 will be-lowered and the depressing with a rack bar and a stop,
naeaeea finger 34 will strike the stop 4 and lower it into the desired notch 3' of the rack bar. Lifting the key lever 17 will cause the elevating finger 35 of the arm to engage the clearing bail and lift the stops to inoperative position.
In this manner it will be seen that the tabulating device may be operated with facility and that a tabulating stop may be quickly set in. the desired notch on the rack bar for tabulating work.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed herein, is: 1
1. The combination in a tabulating device of a hinge plate and a hook on the stop to pivotally engage said plate, a locking plate, and means on the stop to engage said locking plate, and means for lifting the stop to inoperative position, or lowering the stop to operative position.
2. The combination with a rack bar, a locking plate, and a hinge plate, of a stop having a tooth to engage the rack bar, a hook to pivotally engage the hinge plate, and a spring on the stop having a hooked end to engage the locking plate, and a clearing bail pivoted in position, and means for moving said bail, to co-act with the stop, to move the latter to ino erative position.
3. The com ination in a tabulating device with a rack bar, a hinge plate, and a movable stop having a hook hinged on the hinge plate, of a vertically movable arm and means for moving said arm, and means on the arm in operative position to raise or depress the stop.
4. The combination in a tabulating device with a rack bar and a hinge plate, of a stop pivoted on the hinge late and a pivoted clearing bail, a vertica y movable arm having means to engage said stop and said clearing bail, and means for operating said movable arm as described.
5. The combination in a tabulating device with a rack bar, a hinged stop and a pivoted clearing device, of a reciprocable arm having a pair of spaced fingers to engage the Stop and clearing device respectively, and means for operatlng said arm as described.
6. The combination in a tabulatim device with a rack bar, a movable stop and a pivoted clearing bail, of a vertically movable arm having a pair of spaced fingers adapted .to engage the stop and clearing bail re-- spectively, an operating lever, a crank bar, and a crank arm engaging said movable arm for the purpose descri In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
