To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAY M. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket Mutilating, Canceling, and Counting Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a mechanism forming a part of a ticket and fare collecting box which operates to receive tickets deposited therein, canceling and mutilating the same, as well as counting the number of tickets handled by the machine.
It is an object therefore of this invention to construct a mechanism adapted to receive a ticket inserted thereinto acting to deface or cancel, as well as mutilate the ticket, and operating also to count the number of tickets defaced or canceled.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a mechanism one member of which operates continuously and acts together with another member normally at rest to receive a ticket therebetween to mutilate and deface the same, thereby bringing said second member into driving operation to drive a registering mechanism to count the tickets.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a ticket canceling and mutilating mechanism wherein one of the elements thereof is caused to move first by engagement with the ticket which also engages a constantly driven element, and thereafter said first element, by the interlocking of a clutch, completing its movement after dis charge of the ticket to effect registration of the ticket.
It is furthermore an important object of this invention to construct a pair of co-acting-rolls adapted to receive a ticket inserted therebetween, one of said rolls driven continuously and the other normally disconnected from a constantly driven clutch, said rolls provided with defacing and mutilating means whereby when a ticket is inserted therebetween the normally stationary roll is caused .to rotate, thereby causing engagement of the clutch and completion of the rotation of the normally stationary roller thereby, and with a register connected to the shaft to the normally stationary element to effect registration of the ticket received through said rolls.
It is finally an object of this invention to construct an improved power driven mechanism to pass a ticket between mutilating and defacing rolls and effect registration of the ticket.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

As shown in the drawings:
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a fare box or register, denoted as a whole by the reference numeral 1, has a ticket collection box, denoted as a whole by the reference numeral 2, forming an extension on the forward or front end thereof. An extension 3, projects on one side of the ticket extension 2, and visible through a slot in said extension are the numerals on the dials of a register or counter 4. As clearly shown in Fig. l, a slot 5, is provided in the front wall of said extension 2, to permit insertion of tickets therethrough and the tickets so inserted into the machine are received between the defacing and mutilating devices hereinafter described.
For this purpose, attached upon the frame plates 5 and 6, of the extension 2, ofthe fare looX,are- plates 7 and 8, respectively,of the frame of the ticket handling mechanism. The tickets for collection and registration are inserted through the slot 5, of the fare boX extension 2, whereupon the constantly rotating roll 20, driven from the motor 14, wedges the forward edge of the ticket between the cutting knives 26, and inking bands 25, of said respective rolls 20 and 21, so that due to the engagement of said ticket with said elements, rotation is imparted to the roll 21. This rotation continues for a short time suflicient for the pin 42, on the clutch element 37, of the roll 21, to pass beyond the upper end of the re taining finger 39, whereupon the clutch ele ment 37, springs into engagement with the clutch element 3%, so that the roll 21, is caused to rotate positively through the small pinions 30 and 35, until the pin 42, rotates around to strike against the inclined edge 41, of said retaining fingers to thereby again retract the clutch element 87, and disconnect the drive from the roll 21. Overtravel of the roll 21, is prevented by the notched disk 43, and spring impelled detent arm :A, so that only one complete revolution of said roll 21, takes place and a corresponding movement of the register dials in the reg ister 4, to count one ticket. The co-acting cutting knives 26, of said respective rolls act to mutilate the ticket, and the inking bands 25, serve to mark ink lines on each surface thereof, so that the canceled and mutilated ticket, although readable, cannot be used fraudulently if, for any reason, it is obtained from within the collecting compartment of the fare box. In order to replenish the marking fluid within the respective rolls 20 and 21, it is only necessary to unscrew the closures 23, thereof. The guards 2'7 and 28, on the upper and lower rolls re spectively, serve effectually to prevent the tickets clinging to the rolls after passage therethrough, so that the tickets are stripped therefrom and fall into the collecting compartment of the fare box.
I am'aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a machine of the class described, coacting rolls, mechanisms mounted thereon to cut through a ticket and simultaneously place a defacing mark on the surface thereof as it is passed between said rolls, means for constantly driving one roller, and a mechanism controlled by the tickets for driving the other roller from the constantly driven roller when the tickets are inserted in the machine.
2. In a device of the class described, a pair of inking rollers adapted to ink a ticket passin therebetween, mutilating wheels on said ro lers, intermeshing gears on said rollers, one rigidly secured to its roller and the other loose on its roller, a clutch mechanism on one roller, mechanism for releasing the same when a ticket is inserted between the rollers whereby the clutch mechanism rotates the roller from the loose gear.
3. In a device of the class described, a pair of inking rollers adapted to ink a ticket passing therebetween, mutilating wheels on said rollers, intermeshing gears on said rollers, one rigidly secured to its roller and the other loose on its roller, a clutch mechanism on one roller, mechanism for releasing the same when a ticket is inserted bet-ween the rollers whereby the clutch mechanism rotates the roller from the loose gear, mechanism for limiting the roller with the loose gear to one revolution for each ticket, and mechanism for disengaging the clutch from the loose gear for each revolution of the roller.
4. In a device of the class described, coacting rolls, means of one character thereon cutting, and means of another character thereon defacing a ticket passed therebetween, a register for registering the number of tickets operated upon, and mechanism set in operation by insertion of a ticket for automatically actuating the register to count each ticket inserted between the rollers.
5. In a collecting machine of the class described, co-acting rolls, mechanisms mounted thereon to cut through the ticket and simultaneously place a defacing mark on the surfacethereof, registering means for registering the number of tickets collected and a mechanism controlled entirely by the tickets for automatically actuating the register for each ticket fed to the rollers.
6. In a collecting machine of the class de scribed, mechanisms adapted to receive a ticket to mutilate and deface the same, and means connected to said mechanisms and caused to operate by the insertion of a ticket for registering the number of tickets collected.
7. In a machine of the class described, coacting mechanisms adapted to receive aticket therebetween to move the same there through, devices forming a part of said mechanisms to cut and deface the ticket passed therethrough, and a register connected to said mechanisms and automatically caused to operate due to insertion of a ticket into said mechanisms for registering the number of tickets collected.
8. In a collecting machine of the class de scribed, coacting rolls, inking devices associated therewith to deface the surfaces of a ticket passed therebetween, cutting mechanisms associated with said rolls to mutilate a ticket passed therebetween, a register mechanism connected for operation by one of said rol to count the number of ticke collected, a clutch on one roll adapted to drive the sam o the other r l, and mechanism for disengaging the clutch for each revolution of the roll.
9.
