BALLOON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1918.
Application filed March 8, 1918. Serial No. 221,410.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAXIM ZAVARKIN, a citizen of Russia, resident of East Brimfield, county of Ha'mpden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new Afurther object is to provide a control means whereby the gas holders or tanks may be filled, or emptied in a rapid and convenient manner. I
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a balloon made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and,
Fig. 4 is a fragmental vertical sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring-to the drawings, the numeral 10, indicates a plurality of independent inflatable gas holders, the same having a segmental cross-section, with curved outer edges, the holders being arranged in close intimate connection one with another, and held by a netting 11, to which is secured the upper end of the support or guy rods 12, the same being extended convergently downward to the circular car 14, which they support.
Contained in the car or basket 14, is a gas tank 16, the same being engaged by a pipe 17, with a hydrogen generator 18, supplying hydrogen gas to the tank, from which it passes through the pipe 20, con trolled by the valve 21, to a flexible hose 22, engageable with any of the'several downwardly extendin tubes 24:, connected with the outer row 0 series of gas holders 10, provided with independent control valves 25.
The inner concave surfaces of the several segmental holders 10, are adapted to make contact with a central, circular holder 28, also adapted to be inflated by connections with the flexible tube 22, through the pipe 29, controlled by a valve 30, all of the several pipes and valves being of like construction.
Secured upon the upper surface of the inner holder 28, is a pair of opposed guides 32 slidably engaging a plate 33, which is adapted to cover an opening 35, leading into the holder 28, or which can be drawn to one side, by reason of eyes 36, secured to the ends of the plate and to which are attached cords 37, the same running over pulleys 38, adjacent to the periphery of the cylindrical holder 28, the cords 37 extending downwardly to the car to which they are attached by other eyes 39, so as to be held against inadvertent dislocation and are arranged convenient to the operator, so that should it be desired to descend, the plate 33, can be drawn endwise, permitting the gas to escape from the central holder.
It is to be understood that the exterior holders 10, when inflated, are so calculated and designed as to support the entire structure including the car, tank, and gas making machine, under normal circumstances, the central holder 28, providing sufficient buoyancy to cause the entire structure to rise into the air and obviously if the slide 33, be removed to one side, so as to permit as to escape through the o ening 35, the alloon will gradually descend Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a balloon, a plurality ofsegmental gas holders arranged in a circle, a cylindrical holder adjacent to the inner ends of said segmental holders, a car suspended by said holders, means in said our for supplying gas, flexible connection between said means and said holders, inlets to all of said holders, a slide valve at the upper side of said cylindrical holder and a pair of op osed cords extending from said valve to saic car whereby said valve may be manually actuated.
2. In a balloon, the combination with a plurality of segmental shaped hollow elements arranged in a circular row, a central cylindrical'element against which the inner ends of said segmental elements contact, a
car supported by said elements. a gas tank carried 1n said car, means tor supplymg gas through, and means for actuating said sliding plate, said means extending downward to said car.
In testimony whereof I have afiiXed my signature.
MAXIM ZAVARKIN.
