To all `whom zt may concern Be it known that I, MICHEL STANIsLAUs YAssUKovircH, a subject of Russia, residin at New York, in the county of New Yorc and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antifreezing-Hydrants; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in anti-freezing hydrants, in which provision is made for draining the water from the water delivery stock when the valve which controls the passage of the water from the water service pipe, or main, to said stock is closed.
The present invention aims primarily to drain ofi' the water at a low point in the system by a simple and automatically operating device, and to incidentally remove to a separate stock provided for the purpose, the valve-actuating mechanism which was heretofore located in the water delivery stock where it interfered with the free passage of the water, and caused a material reduction in the available pressure at the surface.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application` and in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of'V an anti-freezing hydrant with associated parts partly shown in elevation, and constructed in accordance with my present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sec-` tional view of the water valve and draining device.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view with parts shown in elevation, showing the draining device applied to a different type of valve and illustrating a different form of plug.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the valve and draining device shown in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of the plate for holding the drain pipe.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the usual water delivery stock which may be connected to the upstanding plug 2, as appears in Fig. 1, or
to the sunken plug 3, shown in Fig. 3; and 4 represents the connection or elbow usually employed to place the stock 1 in communication with the service or water supply main 5.
In accordance with the present invention the water valve 6 and its operating mechanism 7 are removed from the water delivery stock 1, and are placed respectively 1n a valve casing 8 included at a convenient point in the service or main 5, and in a separat-c stock 9 near to or remote from the water delivery stock 1, as conditions render advantageous. Access may be had to the valve operating mechanism 7 through the cover plate 10 at the surface.
The effect of the new locations given the water valve 6 and its operating mechanism 7 is to leave the stock 1 free from obstacles to the passage of the water in great volume and at high pressure, and furthermore allows of lacing the water valve G at a lower location than was heretofore possible; which allows the water from the stock 1 and connection or elbow 4, to drain completely therefrom through an opening 11 which I provide for this purpose in the lower part of the water valve 6. When the valve 6 is finally closed this opening 11 will remain just above the lower part 12 of the valve seat, and will afford free egress to all of the water remaining in the stock 1- and elbow 4.
Figs. 1 and 2 show the application of the invention to a hollow cone valve 6; while in Figs. 3 and 4 the invention is shown applied to a double-disk expanding gate valve 13.
Referring now first to Figs. 1 and 2, the draining device is represented in the form of a conduit or pipe 14, which is attached to and moves with the valve 6, passing through a stuffing box 15 provided at the bottom of a depression 16 in the valve calsing 8. One means of connecting the drain pipe 14 with the valve 6 consists in boring and threading the lower end of said valve, as is illustrated at 17 in Fig. 2, and in placing therein two spaced and perforated disks 18 and 19 which loosely imprison therebetween a third disk 20 fixed in any desired manner to the upper end of drain pipe 14.

The combination with an underground water service pipe, a stock :for dellvering water to the surface, and a connection between said water service pipe and stock, of a hollow valve controlling the passage of water from said service pipe to the connection and stock, said Valve having a drain opening in the side thereof which when the valve is closed occupies a position substantially on a level with the lowest point in said connection whereby all of the water in said stock and connection may be allowed to pass through said opening and into the interior of said valve when the latter is closed, and a drain pipe having its open upper end in communication with the bottom of the hollow interior of said valve, said open upper end being disposed close to the lower part of said drain opening whereby to quickly carry off all of the wastewater passing into the valve interior, substantially as described. 6. The combinationl of a water service pipe, a water delivery stock, a connection between said pipe and stock, a valve for controlling the flow of water from the pipe to the stock, a second stock, mechanism contained in said second stock for operating said valve, said valve having a drain opening therein arranged to be at a level substantially even with the lowest point in said connection when said valve is closed, a drain pipe detachably carried by and movable with said valve and having its upper end disposed near to the lower part of said drain opening whereby to receive the waste water therefrom, 'said drain pipe having an eduction port, and means whereby said port may be closed, substantially as described.
7. The combination of a water service pipe, a stock, a connection between said pipe and stock, a valve adapted to control the passage of water from the pipe to the connection and stock, said valve having a drain opening arranged to lie at a level substantlally as low, as the lowest point in said connection when the valve is closed, a drain pipe having its upper open yfend disposed near to the lower part of said drain opening to receive waste water therefrom, means for detachably connecting said pipe to said valve, a stulling box slidingly receiving said pipe, said pipe having an eduction port in its side adapted to be masked in said stuffing box only .when said valve is in the full open position but to be free thereof when the valve is closed or partly opened to permit the discharge of water, substantially as described.
8. The combination of a water service pipe, an unobstructed stock, an elbow connecting said pipe and stock, a hollow valve adapted to control the liow of water to said elbow and stock, a second stock, valve-operating mechanism in said last named stock, said valve having a drain openin' arranged to be at a level substantially as ow as the lowest point in said elb'ow when the valve is closed to allow all of the water in said stock and elbow to drain out, a drain pipe fitted through the bottom of said valve and having a water receiving opening arranged below the lower part of said drain opening, means for detachably and loosely connectin saidl pipe to said valve, a stuliing box sli ingly receiving said pipe, said pipe having an eduction port in the side thereof adapted to be masked in said stuffing box when the valve is fully open but to be free thereof when Athe valve is closed or partly open and a removable plu fitted in the lower en of said drain pipe, su stantially as described.
