To all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL J. MARKs, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter- Actuating Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference characters marked thereon.
My present invention relates to photography, and more particularly to actuating devices for setting ofi photographic shutters after the lapse of a timed interval when set by the operator, so that the latter may arrange himself in the field of the lens, for instance, and appear in the picture, and the invention has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and compact device of this character, that will be durable and efficient and actv with certainty and precision. The
`improvements are directed in part toward providing a device particularly applicable to use on shutters equipped with cable releases, as distinguished from bulb releases. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinan tions of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

Similar reference characters in the several figures indicate the same parts. In the embodiment ofthe invention illustrated, the actuator is shown applied to a camera l having a shutter 2 of which 3 is the setting member, and 4 the operating or releasing member. The latter is depressed to trip the shutter by a thrust cable 5 within the tube 6 'of a common form of shutter operating device known as a cable release. At its outer end the cable 5, or an inflexible extension 5a thereof, carries a button or operating member 7, while the corresponding end of the tube 6 is similarly provided with a button or operating member 8 in which the operating member 7 or rather the extension 5a, slides centrally. By pressing the button 7 inwardly, relatively to the'butu t0n 8, the cable 5 is pushed against the operating member 4 of the shutter to release it, the button 8 being meanwhile held by counter pressure, so that the reaction of the cable movement is borne by the tube 6 against the shutter casing 2, and no vibration, due to thrust against the shutter structure as a whole, results, the forces being balanced. No further description of the cable release is believed to be necessary herein, as it is a well known device, and. so far as the present invention goes, merely performs the office of transmitting power to a suitable shutter part to cause the opening of the latter, and may be considered for certain purposes, and in certain aspectsof the invention, as part of the shutter mechanism y 12 thereon moves to the right from the position yof Fig. 2 to register with `a neck 13 projecting from the casing. It is released by pressure on a button 14. -The neck 13 referred to is threaded upon the outer pro-v jecting'end of a small cylinder or tubular guide 15 (Fig. 5) leading from the exterior tothe interior of the casing. This tube or guide is adapted to receive the inner operating member or button 7 of the cable release, and in it operates a time controlled driving member 16 adapted to engage the button 7. Thev other button 8 is coupled iiXedly to the casing through being received in a seat 17 formed in the tube 15 or inthe neck 13 thereon, which latter is provided with guiding grooves or ways 18 slidably supporting a clip 19 (Figs. 3 and 4). After the button 8 ismplaced in the socket 17 the clip 19 is moved -from theposition of Fig. 3 to that of Fig. 4 to engage it and lock it in place.
After setting the actuator the cable release is applied with thel parts disposed as shown in Fig. 5, and as the plate 10 revolves back tothe position of Fig. 2 under the control of timing mechanism, hereinafter described, the driver 16 is slowly thrust upwardly to the position of Fig. 6, carrying the button 7 with it and projecting the cable 5 to trip the shutter operating member 4.
I will now proceed with a description of the timing mechanism contained within the casing, which brings about these results.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 9, 20
l is the pivotof a one-piece lever 21 having a long arm 22 and a short arm 23. The
main spring 24 coiled about a stud 25 hooks over a pin 26 on the short arm 23 of the lever, and has a tendency to move it to the ynormal position of Fig. 7. A link 27 pivoted at 28 to the outer end of the 'long arm 22 carries at its Vother end the driver 16, before described, so that when the lever 21 is moved to the setposition of Figs. 8 and 9 the driver is ,drawn outwardly in the guide "-15 to admit the cable release button 7 and when the lever is released the spring Vsends thev driver back into'the guide to the position of Fig. 6. `The driver travelssome distanceY together with the' button`7 before the- Vshutter lever 4 is actually tripped, and in order to'delay its/travel and give thev desired time interval a retarding device is employed to act against the return movement of the lever 21 under the influence of the spring 24.
This retarding device consists, in the present embodiment, of a train of gears 29 driven by the lever 21 on its return movement, and the inertia of which supplies the resistance. A link 30 pivoted to the arm 22 at 31 carries a pin 32 that engages with one or another of two abutments 33 and 34 on opposite sides of the pivot 35 of a gear segment 36, movable in two directions and meshing with a spur 37 (Fig. 10) on the shaft of one of the train of gears 29. The abutments 33 and 34 on the segment are separated by a switch cam 38, and after each operation of the lever arm 22 and the attendant throw of the segment 36, the pin 32 on the link 30 is guided over to engagement with the other abutment of the segment on the other side of the pivot under the influence of a spring arm 39 secured at 40 to the gear plate 41, this action occurring during the resetting of the lever 21 and winding of the spring 24. The spring 39 rests in a notch or seat 42 (Fig. 11) in a plate 43 extending vertically on the segment 36 and its free end passes freely through a post 44 on the link 30. It will thus be understood that the gear train is driven in both directions on alternate vibrations of the lever arm 22, and each movement of the train is therefore an effective retarding movement, no resetting of the train being required. The segment 36 simply swings in one direction with one retardation, and in the other direction with the next.
There remains to be described the manner in which the rotation of the shutter cover l0 sets the lever arm 22 and winds the spring 24. The said cover 10 is pivoted on a boss 45 (Figs. 7, 8 and4 11) on a bridge piece 46 spanning the body 9 of the casing. Adjacent to its pivot, it is provided with an inwardly projecting pin 47 cooperating with a slot 48 in the short arm 23 of the lever 21, so that as the disk or cover is rotated to the right in the figures, the lever 21 is moved from the normal position of Fig. 7 to the set position of Figs. 8 and'9. To hold the mechanism set, another pin 49, projecting from the under side of the cover plate vnear its margin, and which may be conveniently formed as an extension of one of the thumb pieces 11, engages behind a spring latch 50 secured at 51 to the casing or made part of j the bridge piece 46.y The releasing buttonl prising a body portion and a detachable disk i shaped rotatable cover, the latter being vadapted to set the time controlled mechanism When rotated on the body portion and being pro-A operating with the cover to hold the timel controlled mechanism set.

In a shutter actuator, the combination With a casing comprising a body portion and a rotary cover, and means for coupling the body portion to the controlling member of a shutter, of a time controlled mechanism in the casing embodying a driver in alinement With the coupling means, a main spring, `a,retarding device and a lever di- `rectly connected to the driver, the retarding device, the spring and the rotary cover of the casing.

8. In a shutter actuator, the combination with a casing and means for coupling it operatively to the controlling member of a shutter, of a time controlled mechanism in the casing embodying a tubular guide, a driving member movable therein, a lever extending transversely of the guide, a main spring for vibrating the lever, a link connecting the lever and the driving member, a gear train, a rocking segment `meshing 90 therewith and a link on the lever coperating with the segment on first one and then the other side of its center on successive vibrations of the lever.
